Dempo SC continued their impressive run as the defending NFL champions beat promoted Viva Kerala 4-0 at home at the Nehru Stadium in the Inaugural I-League.
The first goal of the match for the defending champions Dempo SC did not come until the 33rd minute when Valeriano Rebello's deflected shot off Baba Thunde found the net from Roberto Mendes Silva's corner, but people watching the game had seen around a dozen chances squandered by the Dempo team until they eventually scored. Ranty Martins Soleye, Chidi Edeh and man of the match Anthony Pereira all came close to scoring, even Samir Naik who was playing in the midfield due to the early injury of Peter missed a
sitter when MV Nelson fumbled a Anthony Pereira shot in the 30th minute and left the Dempo man an open goal gaping only to hit the side netting. The writing was on the walls and with Viva Kerela unable to get any sort of passing upfront the goals were always going to come, it was just a matter of when. The team from Kerela made a change in the beginning of the second half when they brought on the young Shabhas Shaleel to put some urgency in their attack and to the youngsters credit his arrival did give a spark to Viva Kerela in the second half. In the 55th minute Badmus Baba Thunde set up Santa Saikhom Singh for a long range shot after great set up work from Shaleel but VP Satish Kumar in goal for Dempo was able to block the powerful drive and also averted the danger from an in rushing Abbey Wisdom who could not make use of the opportunity which fell to him. Immediately after that in a counter attack Beto's cross found Ranty but his header was saved by Nelson. A couple of minutes later Climax Lawrence sent Beto through on goal only to see the Brazilian after going past the keeper being to slow to put the ball away to find his shot blocked and cleared off the line by Othallo Tabia and Akshay Das. But the goal had to come for Dempo and it did in the 61st minute when Ranty's glancing header found the net from Anthony Pereira's cross. Immediately after coming on and being put through in the box by Ranty Martins, the youngster Clifton Gonsalves turned his markers and side stepped with his left foot to give Dempo a commanding lead in the 63rd minute. And the icing on the cake was put by Beto when he headed in at the far post into an open goal after a beautiful cross from the right by Anthony Pereira again.
Dempo now sit clear at the top of the table, two points clear of JCT wheras Viva Kerela are in a slump of form with two defeats coming in quick succession both in Goa.
