The opening match of the I-League's 9th round was between Salgaocar SC and Phagwara's JCT which ended in a three-all draw.
Salgaocar going into this match had not won a single match in the I-League and being the only team left to register a win, they knew it was time to perform and give their fans something to cheer about. And in the opening minutes it did seem as though the home team from Goa were here for the good with a few early chances and noticeably a free kick from their captain Rocus Lamare testing Karanjit Singh in the JCT goal. But against the run of play JCT won a penalty when Heri Habimana pushed recently voted Indian Player of the Year Sunil Chetri in the box and from the resulting spot kick Eduardo increased his goal tally to 8 goals. But Salgaocar did not give in and Felix Chimaokwu was in the thick of things when in the 20th minute he received the ball outside the box and brilliantly turned his defender to become one on one with the goalkeeper only to shoot wide. He would later in the 39th minute redeem himself when he latched onto a bouncing ball in the box played in by Joe and with a volley from his left scored.
The second half started with JCT looking threatening and when great build up play saw Eduardo on the right against Biju who he beat easily, a cross from the Brazilian found Marcos steaming in and heading it with enough power to beat the Salgaocar goalkeeper. Salgaocar came back with a brilliant move of their own in which Nicholas Rodrigues put in a sweet curling cross to see Joe Rodrigues head it in to bring the Goan team back on level terms. In the 63rd minute Sunil Chetri had a snapshot from his left foot and saw Milagrio Medeira concede a corner from which resulted JCT's third goal after defender Anwar Ali rose high at the far post to put the ball in the goal and maybe Milagrio could have done better to stop the header. An almost immediate response came from Salgaocar when most probably the best player on the pitch Joe Rodrigues was put through on the left by Fabio dos Passos and his wonderful cross found a sweet left foot strike from Nicholas Rodrigues which Karanjit Singh could do nothing about. The game had few opportunities after that and maybe the defensive problems of Salgaocar are now there to be seen and if they wanna stay out of relegation Savio Medeira might wanna look to fix things at the back, whereas the team from Punjab will go back not to disappointed knowing they are still unbeaten in the I-League.
