The I-League Round 7 match between Mahindra United and East Bengal Club was a fiery encounter in which the home team came out eventual winners. Derrick Pereira made a couple of changes to his team and brought in M Mohammed Rafi and Izumi Arata for Andrews Pomeyie Mensah and Krishnan Nair Ajayan. Pereira’s faith in his team did not fail as Rafi scored the winner and Arata played an excellent match as well.
Naduparambil Pappachan Pradeep had the first real chance of the match when his volley from outside the box was parried away by goalkeeper Subrata Pal. The match progressed and East Bengal had two to three half chances within the next twenty minutes with Syed Rahim Nabi and McDonald Mukansi having attempts on the Mahindra goal.
It was Mahindra who took the lead in the 31st minute, when Steven Dias put in a ball into the box and East Bengal defender Debabrata Roy tried to chest it to his own goalkeeper. But the ball made its way past the stunned Subrata Pal and into the net.
On the other side Mahindra goalkeeper Sandip Nandy was very lucky not be awarded a red card, when he came out and handled the ball outside the box after missing it.
Then in the 42nd minute Yakubu Yusif curled-in a cross cum shot from the near corner flag which caused Subrata Pal some problems, but the goalkeeper eventually tipped it over the bar.
The second half started off with East Bengal coming out of the blocks with vigour and finding the equalizer from a 25-30 yard freekick. Brazilian striker Edmilson curled the freekick brilliantly to the far post which it hit and went in to leave Sandip Nandy stunned.
The match started getting fierce with tackles flying around and Sushanth Mathew bearing the grunt of the East Bengal players anger and rage.
In the 70th minute the Mumbai-side started-off a brilliant move when Arata, Douhou and Yakubu played a fast interchange of passes to put Arata through only to see East Bengal captain Muttath Suresh making a brilliant challenge and clearing the ball for a corner. From the second corner in quick succession came Mahindra's second goal when a scramble around the goal mouth area saw Yakubu’s header cleared off the line. The ball made its way to M Mohammed Rafi, who smashed the ball as hard as he could and saw it hit the net and the joy of the home fans was audible.
Subrata Bhatarcharjee made a couple of changes to get something out from this match and his team almost did in the 86th minute when Manjit Singh's clearance landed in Sandip Nandy's hands. The goalkeeper deemed it as a backpass giving East Bengal a great opportunity to score from nearly 10 yards out. But before the freekick was taken a brawl took place between the two teams and Edmilson went down to the ground after a squabble between the players. As a result Mahindra player Bello Rasaq was sent off. Edmilson blasted the freekick across the goal hoping someone would get a touch on and send it in. But although an East Bengal player did get his leg to it, Majekodumni Bolaji was only able to sky the ball over the bar.
