The most entertaining match of the inaugural I-League so far took place today at the Nehru Stadium in Margao with nine goals being scored between Salgaocar SC and Mohun Bagan AC in a 4-5 loss for the home side.
The match started off straight away with a goal as India skipper Baichung Bhutia tapped in a rebound of a Jose Ramirez Barreto shot. Salgaocar came back fighting with Nigerian Felix Chimaokwu running down the right flank hello of the Bagan defence and tormenting Bagan's left back Rauf Sher Khan throughout the match and putting low balls in. The Goans were rewarded when Chimaokwu send-in a long ball to Kenyan Boniface Ngairah Ambani. Ambani took control of the ball ahead of Bagan goalkeeper Sangram Mukherjee, who came out and missed the ball leaving the striker an open goal to score.
In the 20th minute Rauf Sher Khan brought down Felix Chimaokwu in the box and the later duly converted the penalty.
Mohun Bagan coach Carlos Roberto Pereira reacted immediately to the equaliser and took off an off-coulour Lal Kamal Bhowmick who looked ineffective and lethargic. Pachau Lalum Puia came on for Bhowmick and immediately made an impact on the game, showing some lively pace. Lalam Puia's pace and impressive runs resulted in two good crosses, which were converted twice by his team-mate Jose Ramirez Barreto in the 32nd and 35th minutes. The first goal came with Lalum Puia free on the left side of the box and smacking the ball low across towards to the target and Barreto tapping it in. The second one for Barreto was a brilliant move and maybe the best of the whole match. The Brazilian sent Lalam Puia free on the left and a brilliant return cross gave Barreto a chance to head it in from the penalty spot area to give his side the lead with Salgaocar keeper Milagrio Medeira only able to look on. Just before half-time Jonathan Bobo converted a Dharamjit Singh corner to give Mohun Bagan a two goal lead at the lemon break.
The second half picked up from the first and Salgaocar came back again with Felix Chimaokwu scoring his second in the 53rd minute from a brilliantly taken freekick which curled over Sangram Mukherjee's outstreched hands into the goal. Chimaokwu's hatrick was complete when his captain Rocus Lamare put in a brilliant cross and the Nigerian striker converted a half volley to level the game in the 65th minute. But it wasn't finished yet and a superb James Lukram Singh free-kick from 25 yards into the top left corner eventually turned out to be the winners for the Calcutta giants.
A tactical review of the match would see the spectator criticizing the defending of both sides, but from the fans point of view the match was highly entertaining and more matches like these should attract the Indian fans back to the stadiums.
A coaches nightmare, but a fans delight...
