Sporting Clube de Goa held Viva Kerala to a goalless draw in the sixth round of the inaugural I-League at the Municipal Corporation Stadium, Calicut. Viva will be ruing the missed chances in the game while Sporting Clube will be delighted to pick up a draw against the home side. The draw means the team from the south still remains in fourth place with now nine points while Sporting Clube remain bottom of the league on three points.
The first chance was also the best chance for Salgoacar SC in the entire game when Khelemba Singh failed to mark the Nigerian Elijah Obagbemiro who in a one on one with MK Nelson failed to beat the keeper, which was saved by the former Mohammadan Sporting keeper then the rebound fell to the debutant Mohammad Ghafari but his shot went over the bar. Viva's first chance came when Badmus Baba Thunde received a cross from Bimanyu Bimal Birua and from the left side he blasted in a shot which deflected of Micky Fernandes and went out. The home team continued to attack and Sporting Clube were on the defensive with 10 players in their own half. Bimanyu Bimal Birua got his chance in the 34th minute when his 30 yard shot was well saved by keeper Milagrio Medeira and just before half time Satish Kumar saw his shot just going wide of the post.
The second half started with Sporting Clube continuing to play a defensive game, while Viva was surging in for the opener and they came close when substitute Shahbaz Shaleel was brought down and referee awarded a free-kick for Viva, which the Ghanian striker Awudu Adama took, but his spectacular shot kissed the crossbar and went out to much of the dismay of the 10,000 spectators at the ground. The men in blue dominated the last ten minutes as Shaleel moved from the left wing to the right and the 17 year old played an attacking role but the strikers failed to capitalise the chances and thus the game ended in a draw. The Viva Kerala players looked disappointed after only drawing. A win would have taken them into third place and it would have put some pressure on the top two.
The boys from God's own Country have their work cut out when they meet yet another Goan outfit but this it will be away, while Sporting Clube de Goa will face a big test when they meet an inform JCT.
