The I-League's Round 6 match between Air-India and East Bengal Club at the Cooperage ground in Mumbai was quite an entertaining one as Bimal Ghosh and Air-India got their first win of the season taking them to sixth position in the inaugural I league.
East Bengal were faster off the blocks and with Nabi and Mcdonald Mukansi putting together a few good moves and a half chance for Mukansi himself. The three man midfield of Air-India could not get their passes going and were being outplayed by their East Bengal counterparts until the half hour mark of the match when Vijith Shetty and Sanju Pradhan combined to put a good move on the right and put a cross in which troubled the East Bengal defence. After a certain passage of time Paresh Shivalkar cut in from the left flank to send a curling shot beyond Subrata Pal but only to see the crossbar stop him from getting a goal which he would eventually get. The second half started off with Samson Singh moving to the right and giving Bashiree a lone striker role which he executed brilliantly holding the ball up well and hassling the defence throughout the match, and the goal also came about in similar fashion when Bashiree held up a long ball from Sanju and passed it on to an overlapping Vijith who put in a cross which evaded everyone in the box excepting Shivlakar who hit the rising ball sweetly to put it past the Indian national goalkeeper to send the home fans in elation.
Subrata Bhattacharjee saw his players looked jaded and tired, and decided to make changes trying to freshen things up but to no avail as Thomte in midfield thwarted all of their plays and the long balls were dealt well by Suley Musah and Amritpal Singh. Air-India looked more threathening as the match reached the climax as Samson had a volley blaze over the bar and a few Shivalkar runs down the left continued to trouble the side from Calcutta. The home side stuck by their guns and came through with a very important first win for themselves putting themselves level on points with East Bengal.
