Viva Kerala continued their impressive run in the inaugural I-League by defeating the struggling Salgoacar SC by 3-1 at the Municipal Corporation Stadium, Calicut. It was Viva's first win against the Goan outfit from as many as four games they played and the win also placed them in fourth position of the league table while it added more misery to Salgoacar's current dismal performances as they remain in the relegation zone. Viva Kerala took the lead in the 40th minute through Ghanian striker Wisdom Abbey. His fellow striker Badmus Baba Thunde, who made a run to the Salgoacar box, found Bimanyu Bimal Birua and the former JCT midfielder's inch perfect cross from the right was superbly headed in by the Ghanian striker to the much delight of 25,000 people in the stadium. But Salgoacar equalised within three minutes of the restart when Felix Chimakowu's pass found Kenyan Boniface Ngairah Ambani who was unmarked and just tapped the ball into the open net. The goal put pressure on Viva but within minutes in the 54th minute went back into the lead through their Nigerian Baba Thunde. He took the ball from the midfield and dribbled past three Salgoacar players and placed a perfect shot which took a touch from one of the Salgoacar defenders but still went in. And then Viva took the game away from the visitors when substitute Shahbas Shaleel scored from a rebound in the 73rd minute of the game.
Viva Kerala dominated the first half but failed to increase their tally and when they conceded early in the second half it was a spirited performance from the Men in Blue that helped them to make a winning start in their first home game. One must should not forget the atmosphere created by the crowd in the Corporation Stadium which was arguably the 12th man for the home team .While it was yet another disappointing display from the Goan club which is yet to register their first win in the I-League. Viva Kerala will now face Sporting Clube de Goa who is placed bottom of the I-League table while Salgoacar will take on the Red Devils from Mumbai, Mahindra United.
