Defending NFL champions Dempo SC beat an inform Churchill Brothers SC 2-0 in their Round 3 match of the inaugural I-League at the Nehru Stadium, Margao. With today's win Dempo are now alone on top of the I-League standings with three wins out of three matches, while for Churchill Brothers it was their first loss in as many matches.
Many had expected an open match in this Goan derby, but experience won over youth as Dempo mostly controlled their local rivals. In the last few weeks Churchill Brothers had beaten anyone and everyone on the Indian circuit, winning the Durand Cup and the Goan Super Cup in the process. And in the Goan Super Cup final they had trashed this very Dempo SC team 4-1, who seem to have found their form and their team balance with the start of the I-League.
It started off as an open match with both teams fighting for possession and control of the midfield. But the longer the match lasted especially Dempo's Brazilian Roberto Mendes Silva stamped his authority onto game and gave Dempo the necessary edge. Both Nigerian attacking lines of Dempo's Ranty Martins Soleye and Chidi Edeh as well as Churchill Brothers' Odafe Onyeka Okolie and Mboyo Iyomi looked somewhat offcolour today as the striker missed some easy chances, something they are not known for. It were the Indian international full backs of Mahesh Gawli for Dempo and Gouramangi Singh for Churchill Brothers who stole the limelight with a strong performance at the back.
Dempo took the lead in the third minute of first half injury time when Roberto Mendes Silva scored of a freekick taken by Valeriano Rebello which Churchill keeper Vinay Singh failed to collect. Down by a goal one expected Churchill Brothers to come out and try to get back into the match, but it wasn't to be today as Dempo controlled the match in the second half. Dempo doubled their lead in the 65th minute when a Nicolau Borges corner beat everyone to reach his captain Ranty Martins Soleye on the far side, who made no mistake to head into the empty goal. Churchill Brothers had their best chance of the match in the 83rd minute when striker Mboyo Iyomi was able to head a Robert Lalthalma cross from the left goalwards but it was easily collected by Dempo keeper VP Satish Kumar. It was the only Churchill attempt which didn't go wide today.
