Defending National League champions Dempo SC made a perfect start in the inaugural "ONGC" I-League with a 3-0 victory against promoted Salgaocar SC at the festive Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margao.
Before the match the I-League was formally declared open by the AIFF president Priya Ranjan Das Munshi and Bollywood star John Abraham, who not only came to promote his football movie "Goal" but is serious about promoting football in India, which John has termed as one of his passions.
During the match striker Chidi Edeh proved once more why he such a great asset for any side he plays for. The Nigerian scored the first goal of the I-League early on in the fourth minute when Nicolau Colaco failed to clear the ball and rather then giving away a corner he mispassed the ball to Ranty, who found Chidi free in the middle and he clinically finished it off. Chidi doubled the score in the 25th minute when Nicolau Borges played it forward to Ranty, who saw Chidi somewhat free on the right and the placed the ball past Marcus Basumatari. Dempo were crusing against a Salgaocar side, who seemed shocked at what come out and hit them. Captain Ranty Martins Soleye finished off the scoring with a delightful goal in the 68th minute off a pass from Anthony Pereira to give his side a comfortable 3-0 victory.
Dempo looked a transformed side to the team which had played the Federation Cup and Durand Cup lately. Playing their own game of attacking football depending on Chidi and Ranty to finish with Roberto Mendes Silva a perfect provider along with striker Anthony Pereira, who was doing a good job on the right flank.
Salgaocar meanwhile didn't look the team which just missed the Durand Cup final a few weeks ago. Marcus Basumatari in goal and the backline never looked at ease with Dempo always looking threathening. Sadly Malswam Tulunga was a non-starter on the right while Felix seemed to be left all alone by himself in attack. PK Anil Kumar, who after the Durand Cup was termed as the next potential IM Vijayan, didn't cause any such problems to Mahesh Gawli and John Charles Dias.
