Mohun Bagan AC were held to a goalless draw by I-League leaders Dempo SC in a Round 16 match at the floodlit Saltlake Stadium, Calcutta to reduce their chances of winning the inaugural title to a minimum. Mohun Bagan now have 28 points from 16 matches to remain third, while Dempo maintained pole position in the league with 32 points from the same number of matches.
Mohun Bagan made a bright start into the match with captain Dharamjit Singh's shot just seconds into the match beating Dempo goalkeeper Abhijit Mondal but hitting the crossbar and Lalam Puia is unable to control the returning ball as it goes wide. But Dempo weren't intimidated by Bagan as only in the 3rd minute their captain Ranty Martins Soleye failed to control a Chidi Edeh cross from the left flank due to slushy ground conditions at the Saltlake Stadium after another morning shower in Calcutta. Dempo looked the more polished of the two sides with Bagan clearly missing Baichung Bhutia due to suspension and young left wingback Mohanraj due to injury. Just before the break Dempo got two good chances to score. First in the 42nd minute an Anthony Pereira shot goes directly into the hands of Bagan keeper Sangram Mukherjee, while only two minutes later a Mahesh Gawli header from the corner is saved on the goalline by the Bagan defence.
After the break both sides continued to try and go into attack, but with no results to show. In the 65th minute a James Singh freekick from the right flank could have been dangerous but Abhijit Mondal collects the ball on his second attempt. On the other side Chidi Edeh breaks free, but youngster Rahul Kamur blocks Chidi's shot and clears the ball out of danger. Dempo had the best chance of the match in the 73rd minute when winger Nicolau Borges was suddenly free on the left just outside the 6 yard box after Roberto Mendes Silva headed on, but his shot went wide with only Sangram Mukherjee to beat. Only a minute later Sangram once more came to his teams rescue as he acrobatically snatched the ball away from a charging Ranty. Mohun Bagan substitute Ishfaq Ahmed brought some live into the Bagan attack, but he also missed his best chance when keeper Abhijit Mondal couldn't hold on to a Dharamjit Singh cross.
Referee Rizwan ul-Haq had things under control, but seemed to have forgotten to have brought his yellow card onto the ground. On a number of occasions he could have shown a card, on some he needed to show a card. Lucky for him that the players didn't misuse the freedom that they got from the referee.
