Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan AC avenged their 3-1 home defeat to Viva Kerala, while overcoming them 2-0 at Calicut in the 11th Round of the inaugural I-League. Mohun Bagan dominated the match and outplayed the Kerala team in all departments. The win took Mohun Bagan to the fourth position in the table while the club from god's own country still remains in seventh position to give new hope for the bottom placed teams like East Bengal and Air-India.
Viva Kerala started with the same eleven which defeated Air-India while Mohun Bagan made a couple of changes to their line-up. Influential midfielder Douglas da Silva returned to the team after missing out the tie against Sporting Clube de Goa and impressive young midfielder Pachau Lalam Puia was also drafted into the starting eleven.
The match started off with Bagan attacking and putting the home team under immense pressure in the early minutes of the game. The visitors came close when India skipper Baichung Bhutia netted in the ball from a corner only to be ruled offside by the linesman. But Bhutia within minutes it was the captain himself who helped Bagan to take the lead. The goal came as a result of an excellent run from defender Habibur Rehman Mondal on the right flank. A cross by Mondal found veteran striker Jose Ramirez Barreto, who controlled the ball well and placed it to the near post only to find Bhutia netting the ball in. Viva Kerala came back strongly and tested Sangram Mukherjee on few occasions but failed to find the equalizer before the half-time whistle.
The men in blue started the second half brightly and they almost squared the game when Bimanyu Bimal Birua's brilliant shot was pulled out more brilliantly by former India keeper Mukherjee. Viva striker Wisdom Abbey came close to finally equalize when his shot was saved on the goal line by Habibur Rehman Mondal in the 61st minute.
Viva Kerala increased the pressure and opened spaces for Bagan to double the lead. The Kolkatans found themselves denied a second goal by Viva goalkeeper MV Nelson on many occasions. But in the 82nd minute of the game substitute Ishfaq Ahmed made it 2-0 for the green-and-maroon brigade. The former Dempo player received a pass from Bhutia, made a run on the left flank and drilled the ball into the right side of the net. The goal took away the game from Viva Kerala and left the 20.000 spectators in the stadium disappointed.
Finally it was Douglas da Silva's excellent performance in the midfield, which won the match for Mohun Bagan. He never allowed the 17-year old Shahbas Shaleel to make any movements and closed down all gaps in midfield.
