It was a match-up of two former NFL champions but Salgaocar SC and East Bengal Club are far away from winning the inaugural I-league title. The match ended in a boring goalless draw at the Nehru Stadium, Margao not really helping the clubs in their fight for survival. Salgaocar remain bottom of the league with five points from 10 matches, while East Bengal moved out of the relegation zone with now eight points from as many matches.
It was clear from the start that both sides would look to not concede a goal before venturing out to score. Salgaocar have conceeded 13 goals in their last three outings while East Bengal had lost their last fifth matches and had only scored a goal in their last four. Salgaocar still had managed eights goals in those three defeats, but coach Savio Medeira had to lay the focus on strengthening the defence as both coaches made some changes to their line-ups.
Both sides tested each other initially with a lot of the action confined to the midfield. East Bengal got their first break in the 15th minute when Snehashis Chakraborty ventured into the box, but the winger was sandwiched by Remus Gomes and Nicolau Colaco and to the surprise of all the referee Rizwan ul-Haq didn't point to the penalty spot. On the other side Salgaocar had a good build-up only a couple of minutes later when Joe Rodrigues played a long cross from the left for Malswam Tulunga, but Mama's first touch denied him a shot on goal as Debabrata Roy could clear the ball for a corner. Thereafter the match once more was mainly confined to midfield action with Salgaocar showing some purpose but the longer the half lasted the more East Bengal tried to move up. The left flank was the more active with Snehashis Chakraborty and Debabrata Roy creating some good build-ups. East Bengal's bext chances came of Debabrata crosses from the left with once Dipendu Biswas heading over while on the second occasion Edmilson controlled the ball well but then shot over.
The less said about the second half the better. Both sides just didn't get their game together with East Bengal not having even one shot on goal, while Salgaocar's build-ups looked better with Rocus Lamare and Fabio dos Passos trying to create something but the strikers couldn't utilise them. But it was Fabio who wasted the best of the chances not able to score on two occasions infront of goal. Both sides will have to do better to avoid relegation from the I-League.
