Calcutta giants East Bengal Club were held to a 1-1 draw by Mahindra United today in round 7 of the 2nd ONGC I-League at the Salt Lake Stadium in Calcutta. The first half of the match was totally dominated by the visitors and East Bengal were extremely lucky to be level at the end of the first half. Subrata Pal had to make some superb saves to prevent Mahindra from putting the match result beyond doubt in the first half itself. Stanley Rozario was quick to alter his plans as he replaced Mehraj with Jayanta Sen in the 35th minute itself thereby providing protection to his overworked defenders by putting in a defensive midfielder. The second half was a totally different ball game as the game opened up as a result of both teams vying for the win. The East Bengal front duo, Yakubu and Sunil Chetri, who were on totally different wavelengths in the first half, began to integrate better and started troubling the Mahindra defence. Sunil Chetri came close to putting East Bengal ahead as his deft shot hit the bar in the 52nd minute after a brilliant set-up by Yakubu. Mahindra made two changes soon after as Steven Dias and Paresh Shivalkar were called in to replace Pierre and Pradeep. It turned out to be a "Super Substitution" as Paresh Shivalkar latched on to a great through ball and slotted the ball home to put Mahindra ahead in the 58th minute. However, Mahindra could only hold on to the lead for a mere 3 minutes as Sunil Chetri brought East Bengal level in the 61st minute. East Bengal received a slight injury scare as Sunil Chetri was kicked in the face accidentally by Shivalkar in the 63rd minute. However, Sunil Chetri returned to the field to continue the match and East Bengal fans breathed a sigh of relief. Mahindra almost won the game in the latter stages as Sushil Singh failed to capitalise on a defensive lapse and only managed to hit the post in the 70th minute. Subrata Pal also managed to thwart Chidi Edeh in the 88th minute after the striker found himself one-on-one with the East Bengal custodian. The draw gives East Bengal nine points from seven matches, two more than Mahindra United.
