Match
Report: Noh Alam Shah scored twice but was later sent off as Singapore
Cup holders Tampines Rovers downed Mohun Bagan of India 2-0 on Tuesday
to book their place in the quarter-finals of the AFC Cup for a third consecutive
year. The Singapore international striker opened the scoring at Tampines
Stadium with a spectacular bicycle kick late in the first half and slotted
home his second midway through the second half as Tampines assured themselves
of top spot in Group F. However, Alam Shah's evening ended on a bitter
note as he was dismissed 18 minutes from time for a bad challenge on Douglas
Santos that sparked off a melee that cleared both benches. The visitors
dominated play early on with the attacking trio of Baichung Butia, Pachau
Lalam Puia and Jose Baretto causing problems for the nervous Tampines
back-line. But for all of Bagan's attacking endeavour, it was Tampines
that created the better chances in the opening half. Bagan goalkeeper
Shilton Paul was called into action in the 22nd minute when Rafi Ali broke
down the right flank and crossed towards the centre where Paul clawed
the ball away before it could reach a lurking Alam Shah. The Bagan keeper
would be left helpless though on 35 minutes after a moment of magic by
Alam Shah. Deepak Mandal gave the ball away on the left wing to Thailand
international Sutee Suksomkit, who whipped a high cross into the centre
towards Peres de Oliviera. The cross was a bit too strong for the Brazilian
playmaker who could only head it towards the penalty spot but Alam Shah
sized up the ball with his back to goal before launching an acrobatic
bicycle kick that gave Paul no chance. Bagan's best chance of the half
came four minutes before the break when Jose Baretto went down the left
and cut the ball back from the by-line to an unmarked Mehtab Hussain,
who blazed over from 10 yards. Alam Shah also fired over from close range
after a knock-down by de Oliveira a minute into the second half but the
home side had to endure fierce pressure for the next 20 minutes as the
Indian side desperately chased an equaliser. They went close to levelling
the score in the 51st minute when Lalam Puia fired in a fierce shot that
hit goalkeeper Rezal Hassan and fell right at the feet of Jose Baretto,
who put his effort wide. Bagan intensified the pressure but were caught
on the break in the 66th minute when de Oliveira burst up the middle of
the pitch on the counter attack. The Brazilian was surrounded by four
defenders and lost possession but the ball broke to an unmarked Alam Shah,
who calmly slotted the ball past Paul. Things heated up in the closing
minutes and a series of bad challenges culminated in an over-the-top tackle
by Alam Shah on Santos in the 72nd minute.
A melee ensued between the two sets of players and officials from both
teams spilled on to the pitch in an attempt to calm the situation. When
the dust had settled, the only player to be dismissed was the home side's
two-goal hero. (AFC)

MATCH
REPORT:
Hong Kong's Happy Valley blew the race for qualification from Group E
of the AFC Cup wide open as Chun Bong Law's first-half brace secured a
thrilling 2-1 win over Mahindra United on Tuesday. Indian National Football
League champions Mahindra had claimed victories in their opening three
games of the tournament, but struggled to repeat that type of form at
a rain drenched Mongkok Stadium in Hong Kong. Captain Yakuba Yusif reduced
the arrears for the visitors midway through the second-half, but the home
side picked up their second win of the competition despite late heavy
pressure.
Singapore Armed Forces join Mahindra on nine points at the top of the
table after their victory against a pointless New Radiant, while Happy
Valley move onto six points with two games remaining, with only the group
winners certain of a place in the next round.
Vandre Moteiro had an early chance for the home side but could only pull
his effort from the edge of the area wide as Happy Valley dominated the
early exchanges. Sushanth Mathew tested home goalkeeper Chun Yip Fan with
a long range free-kick after nine minutes, but the Happy Valley custodian
dealt comfortably with the skidding low strike. The home side took a deserved
lead midway through the first-half as Law struck a quickfire double to
stun the visitors. Evanor Fantin's 21st minute turning shot from inside
the area was only partially saved by visiting goalkeeper Nandy Sandip,
handing Law the easiest of close range finishes. Law grabbed a second
two minutes later with a sweeping close range finish after Yiu Cheuk Poon's
dangerous inswinging left wing corner evaded the Mahindra defence and
landed at midfielder's feet inside the six-yard area. Mahindra goalkeeper
Sandip was stretched off 10 minutes before the break with a serious head
injury after rushing out bravely at the feet of Happy Valley's Sze Ming
Lee.
Poon almost handed the visitors a way back into the game seven minutes
after the restart as the defenders attempted clearance bounced narrowly
wide of the near post, with Fan scrambling across the face of his goal.
Manjit Singh should have reduced the deficit just before the hour mark
but blazed over after being sent clear of the Happy Valley backline. Mahindra
finally capitalised on their second half dominance as Yusif gambled on
a long clearance and slid the ball past Fan with 21 minutes remaining
following hesitation in the Happy Valley defence to set-up a tense finish.

Group F - Royal Thai Army Stadium, Bangkok:
Osotpa
M-150 FC, Thailand 0-0 Mohun Bagan AC
Goals:
none
MATCH
REPORT:
Mohun Bagan's undefeated record in the 2007 AFC Cup remained intact following
a goalless draw with Osotspa M-150 in Bangkok on Wednesday although the
Thai side will be disappointed they could not make their dominance pay
dividends.
Osotspa went into the game looking to bounce back from their 2-1 defeat
to Tampines Rovers in the previous round of Group F matches and had the
Indian side under the cosh for large parts of the game but lacked the
cutting edge that would give them their second win of the campaign.
The Calcutta giants signaled their attacking intentions right for the
start with a three-pronged frontline fielded by temporary coach Robson
- the former fitness trainer who was filling the void after the shock
resignation of Chima Okorie amidst rumours of conflict with some of the
club's senior players.
But the Brazilian's trio of compatriot and skipper Jose Barreto, Pachau
Lalam Puia and star striker Baichung Bhutia, both of whom found the net
in the 2-1 win over Pahang, found the going tough on a Royal Thai Army
Stadium pitch that was churning up badly following an early afternoon
deluge.
However, despite Bagan's domination of the early possession, Osotspa soon
gained the ascendancy in the first half with some skilful play that belied
the heavy pitch. Jakkrit Bunkham played an intelligent short corner to
Ponlawat Wangkahad, whose angled drive was kept out by the keeper before
Sanjeev Maria blocked a stinging Jakkrit drive three minutes later that
may have broken the deadlock had it not cannoned of the Mohun defender.
Osotspa replaced forward Thongchai Ratchai with midfielder Anek Pukkasae
at the start of the second half as the 2006 Thai League runners-up looked
to build on their first half dominance. But their enthusiasm got the better
of them as first Jakkrit and then Worawut Wangsawat picked up yellow cards
for fouls in the 49th and 51st minutes respectively. Jakkrit quickly came
close to redeeming himself on two occasions. Seven minutes after he entered
the book of Chinese referee Yang Zhiqiang his curling shot went just wide
of the mark and then, in the 62nd minute, he hit a sweetly struck volley
that dipped over the Mohun Bagan bar. The visitors seemed bereft of ideas
but they were almost gifted the lead against the run of play when a cross-shot
from Bhutia squirmed through the hands of Narong and onto the roof of
the net during a rare foray into the Osotspa half. Seeking to translate
their dominance into goals Osotspa coach Arjham Songngmasap replaced defender
Siwamet with Kritsada Kemden in the 77th minute and the forward was denied
a goal with virtually his first touch thanks to a timely sliding block
by India international Deepak Mondal. Three minutes later Jakkrit again
missed the target when through on goal and it turned out not to be Osotspa's
day.

MATCH
REPORT:
An injury time goal by Yusif Yakubu guided Mahindra United to a solitary
goal win over New Radiant of Maldives to score their second successive
win in their group 'E' home match of the AFC Cup tournament at Nehru Stadium
here today. The all-important goal came when Yakubu shot home off 'keeper
Devinda's deflection after Andrew Mensah Pomeyie took the shot.
Mahindras, who dominated the match throughout and created several scoring
chances, could have won by bigger margin had their strikers Andrew Pomeyie
and Yusif Yakubu been on target.
With this win Mahindra boosted their tally to six points from two matches,
while New Radiant, who earlier lost to Happy Valley of Hong Kong are still
to open their account from two matches.
Mahindra United controlled the proceeding in the first-half and kept the
rivals under constant pressure, created ample of scoring chances but it
was the undoing of their strikers who were not able to find their shots
on target. Mahindra had the first chance to score in the 10th minute when
a cross from the right by Sushant Mathew saw Andrew Pomeyie header missing
narrowly. Ten minutes later, Mbaka Bokembe's 20 yard shot off a pass by
Yakubu, missed the target narrowly. Then it was the turn of Yakubu whose
35 yards shot sailed inches over the bar. New Radiant came off with couple
of counter moves which saw Qasim Shamwel header sailing inches over the
bar and then Mahindra 'keeper Sandip Nandy making a diving save of Simaz
Hussain shot from the top of the box.
Mahindra continued their dominance in the second-half with barrage of
moves but found rival keeper Sadun Devindra tough to beat as he made a
brilliant save off K Ajayan left footer, punching the ball over. Earlier,
he collected an angular shot-off substitute Steven Dias shot after Andrew
Pomeyie, N Pradeep and Yakubu failing to score from close. Mahindra who
were all over their rival territory in the closing stage even as New Radiant
defended in numbers in search of the elusive goal, Sur Kumar Singh from
the left send a cross deep into the box for Yakubu who again missed a
glorious change to break the deadlock as he headed over with no one to
challenge him. With the entire Mahindra team camping into their rival
half, New Radiant came with counter move and nearly scored in the dying
minutes but keeper Sandip Nandy managed to put the ball out of danger
off Simaz Hussain shot from close. Than Qasim Samweel shot from top of
the box sailed inches over the bar.
Referee al Ghatrifi Mohamood Mohd Juma of Oman showed yellow cards to
Mahindra's Mbaka Bokembe and Yakubu.
With the match heading for a draw, Mahindra struck in the injury time.
Mbaka Bekembe shot the goal was intercepted by Andrew Pomyie whose crack
at the goal was deflected by keeper Sadun Devinda and the on-rushing Yakubu
shot in to give Mahindra their second win. (AFC)

MATCH
REPORT:
Mohun Bagan of India heaped further misery on Pahang as they handed the
Malaysian FA Cup holders their second consecutive defeat in AFC Cup Group
D with a 2-1 victory at Stadium Darul Makmur on Tuesday. The East Coast
side were hoping to bounce back after a 4-0 trouncing at the hands of
Thailand's Osotspa M-150 in their opening match but substitute Bhaichung
Bhutia deflected home an attempted clearance by goalkeeper Mohammedd Iqbal
Suhimi 16 minutes from time to give the Indian side victory.
It was an unfortunate end to the match for the Malaysian side who showed
their eagerness going forward from the opening whistle with V.Saravanan
in menacing form. However, the towering presence of Douglas Santos at
the heart of Mohun Bagan defence made it difficult for the home side to
make inroads in attack. The first real chance of the game came in the
19th minute when V.Saravanan played a nifty one-two with strike partner
Mohd Kamal Rodiarjat but with just Bagan keeper Paul Shilton to beat,
the youngster blasted the ball over. That miss proved costly as the visitors
went ahead in the 30th minute when a pass from Sushikumar Chongtham released
Lalawmpuia Pachuau, who slotted home from close range to the delight of
the Bagan bench. As their confidence grew, the Kolkota side began to push
forward but tenacious defending by veteran Pahang defender Rosdi Talib
prevented them from increasing their advantage. Bagan seemed content to
try and protect their lead at the start of the second half against the
tentative Pahang attack but the hosts managed to draw level on the hour
mark when a free kick by Rosdi was met by midfielder Tarik Al-Janaby,
who out jumped the Indian defence to head home an equaliser. The troubled
Malaysian side appeared to be on course for their first point in the group
but disaster struck on 74 minutes when Mohammed Iqbal was pressured by
Bhutia as he attempted to clear the ball. To the horror of the home crowd,
the goalkeeper's kick hit the Bagan player and deflected into his goal
to condemn the hosts to another defeat.
Pahang are bottom of Group F following consecutive losses while Mohun
Bagan drew level with Singapore's Tampines Rovers for top spot on four
points.
Mohun Bagan coach Chima Okorie was delighted to see his side win.
"It was tremendous for us to get three points here. That was our
mission when we came come here to Kuantan as we were determined to get
a win," said Okorie.
"The team still have a long way to go and we have yet to play to
our optimum level. But the boys still worked hard for the win today and
it will be very useful for us as we can use it as a stepping stone for
our next match against Osotspa in three weeks' time."
Pahang coach Ahmad Yusoff lamented his strikers' inability to convert
chances.
"We had a lot of chances but unfortunately our strikers didn't take
them. Mohun Bagan's goalkeeper Paul Shiltron played a tremendous game
and he made a lot of good saves," said Yusoff.
"Overall I'm satisfied with our performance although our goalkeeper
made a few blunders. The difference today was that the Indian team took
their chances well and we didn't."
"It is not a good result for us and it will be very hard for us to
come back now from this position and qualify for the quarter-finals of
the AFC Cup." (AFC)
