Match
report: Indian giants East Bengal were held out by spirited Al
Jaish in an entertaining match. East Bengal were on the throttle straight
from the word go. East Bengal could have opened their account as early
as second minute, when Mohammed Tarik almost scored an own goal as he
misplaced a back pass to the goalkeeper. On the other end, Ziaad Shaboo's
cross from the flanks forced Sangram Mukherjee to make an excellent save
in the 12.minute. Five minutes later, Syed Rahim Nabi failed to convert
an excellent move created by Douglas da Silva to give the Calcutta club
the lead, much to the dismay of the home crowd. Climax Lawrence failed
to convert an easy chance, after some good work from Bijen Singh in the
35.minute had Al Jaish completely caught out. Just before half time, the
referee reversed his decision to award East Bengal a goal. Alvito D Cunha's
brilliant cross from the left found Dipankar Roy, whose first attempt
was cleared by Al Jaish defender Khalaf. Bijen Singh taking opportunity
of the poor marking from Al Jaish, slotted the rebound home. The referee
had initially awarded the goal in favor of East Bengal but after consultations
with his assistant, he decided to reverse the decision. Apparently, Dipankar
Roy had blocked keeper Ridwan. In the second half, Zenou forced Sangram
Mukherjee to produce another excellent save after some touch of brilliance
from the Syrian. In the 68.minute Douglas' header from an D'Cunha freekick
narrowly missed the goal. East Bengal would have been blaming themselves
for their poor finishing, when Climax Lawrence failed to put the ball
into an open net after an excellent move from Shylo Malswam Tulunga found
Al Jaish defenders all over the place in the 90.minute. The second half
was completely dominated by the home side, however Al Jaish defenders
managed to hold on to the score line. However the Syrians would be happy
with an draw away from home. East Bengal have to improve their finishing
in order to stand a chance in the away leg.
