Match Report:
AFC report: Nigerian forwards Ranti Martins Soleye and Chidi Edeh each scored two goals as Indian champions Dempo claimed a place in the AFC Cup quarter-finals with a 5-2 victory over Omani side Sur on Wednesday. Climax Lawrence netted the other goal for the Goa club, who moved to the top of Group A, pending the result of the match between Al Muharraq of Bahrain and Al Ansar of Lebanon, which has been postponed due to the Lebanese crisis.
However, East Bengal's 1-0 loss to Ahli Sana'a in Yemen meant that Dempo clinched a place in the knockout stage as one of the three best group runners-up at the very least.
Substitute Mohammed Salim Al Sinani and skipper Mohsin Saleh Al Harbi scored for the visitors, who finished the game with nine men after Talal Mohammed Al Saifi and goalkeeper Ahmed Khamis Al Qulhati were sent off.
Dempo found their form on a hot and humid afternoon at the Nehru Stadium against a Sur side who were missing many of their best players and were a pale shadow of the side that beat Dempo 3-2 in Oman earlier in the campaign.
The home side dominated the opening half and took a deserved lead in the 30th minute when Al Qulhati was hesitant in gathering a cross by Nicolau Borges, allowing Martins to tap home the opener. The Dempo captain struck again eight minutes later when he chested down a cross from the right by Valeriano Rebello and fired home a sweet half-volley with his right foot. Sur's frustration boiled over when Al Saifi was sent off on the stroke of half-time for a two-footed lunge on Beto.
Dempo took full advantage of the extra man, extending their lead in the 64th minute when Beto's through ball released Edeh, who coolly slotted the ball past Al Qulhati in a one-on-one situation. Lawrence then added a fourth in the 72nd minute, firing a fierce shot into the top right corner of the Sur net from 25 metres. Dempo took their foot of the gas and paid the price when Al Sinani scored with a long-range effort three minutes later and Al Harbi added a second for the visitors with four minutes remaining. However, Edeh restored Dempo's three-goal advantage in the dying minutes, tapping in a cross from the right by substitute Peter Carvalho. Sur's misery was compounded when Al Qulhati was dismissed after flattening Edeh outside the box as the Nigerian attempted to complete his hattrick.

Match Report:
AFC report: Yemen League champions Ahli Sana'a claimed their first win in Group B of the AFC Cup with a 1-0 victory over ten-man East Bengal, who fail to qualify to the quarterfinals as a result of the defeat.
The only goal of the game came in the 44th minute through striker Ali Al Nono while East Bengal finished with 10 men after Nigerian defender Majekodunmi Bolaji was sent off late in the game.
Ahli Sana'a were the best side in the first half and dominated the early exchanges and they had their first chance in the 11th minute when Fuad Al Ammari's shot was saved by East Bengal goalkeeper Subrata Pal. Ahli Sana'a continued to pile on the pressure and went close in the 22nd minute when Zaid Saleh steered Al Nono's cross over the crossbar before Al Nono sent a header over. The crossbar then denied the home side when Ahmed Ibrahim Kellil fired a long-range effort that rattled the woodwork for Ahli Sana'a. But Ahli Sana'a eventually converted their superiority into a goal a minute before the break when Al Nono broke the offside trap and bore down on goal before sending a right-foot shot past Pal. It should have been 2-0 in the first minute of stoppage time when Asaad Hussein's shot was pushed behind for a corner before East Bengal had their first notable chance with a freekick from Edmilson Marques that went wide.
East Bengal had another chance just after the break when Surkumar Singh's freekick went over the crossbar and then Al Nono's header went straight into the hands of the goalkeeper at the other end. Ahli Sana'a should have scored their second of the night in the 62nd minute but Yahya Huban's first time volley was saved by Paul and six minutes later Al Nono sent a shot into the side netting. But the best chance of the second half fell for Ahli Sana'a when Yahya Huban's header from a corner was cleared twice off the goal line by East Bengal's Poibang Pohshna and Mehtab Hussain with eight minutes remaining. East Bengal finished the game with ten men when Nigerian defender Majekodunmi Bolaji was shown his second yellow card in the last minute of the game.

As an example, Bhutia said that he has not seen a more talented footballer from the country than IM Vijayan, the former national skipper hailing from Kerala, who would have achieved much more, had proper training facilities been available during his days.
"IM Vijayan was as talented as any other footballer in the world. With his inherent talent if only he had the right training methods to fall back on and proper guidance, he would have gone very far," the champion footballer said.
He also gave the example of Portugal's ace striker Cristiano Ronaldo who, he felt, has now become a complete footballer after moving to England.
"Cristiano Ronaldo was very skilfull when he came to England. After working on improving his fitness and strength when he joined Manchester United, he has become a complete footballer now," he pointed out.
Bhutia's views were endorsed by National Cricket Academy's Director of operations and former Australian player Dav Whatmore.
Whatmore said that talented old-time cricketers would have collapsed had they been fitted into the modern-day grind and not worked on their fitness as hard as the present day cricketers are doing.

Sher-e-Punjab::: Chandigarh FC bag Sher-e-Punjab Trophy :::
Chandigarh FC scored a well-merited 1-0 triumph over Golden Club in the final of the Chandigarh Senior Football Championship for the Sher-e-Punjab Trophy at the Sector 17 Football Stadium here today. CFC could have won the match by a bigger margin had their forwards capitalised on the chances which came their way. After a barren first half, Chandigarh FC snatched the all-important goal in the 78th minute through Bhupinder Singh who booted home from close range in a goalmouth melee.
Chandigarh FC took time to settle down. After initial probings, they had an opportunity to open their account in the 32nd minute. Bhupinder sent a centre from the left to speedy Rajiv Rattan whose first-timer shot on the run from close went out. Chandigarh FC were unlucky as woodwork denied them a goal in the 44th minute. A combined move between Rajiv Rattan and Bawa saw the latter sending a centre from the right to Deepak Hooda whose powerful shot struck the crosspiece before the ball bounced back into the game.
On resumption, Bhupinder had two good tries at the Golden Club goal within five minutes. His first try sailed over the bar and later his grounder went wide with a narrow margin. Against the run of play, Golden Club had a golden chance to forge ahead. Jagmohan Singh Negi passed the ball to Karan whose try culminated into a corner kick which was wasted. With light fading, Chandigarh FC scored the match-winner in the 78th minute through Bhupinder who guided the ball on rebound. Two minutes before the close, Anish of Chandigarh FC and Mojnath of Golden Club were shown red and yellow cards.
Akhil (Chandigarh Football Club), Mojnath (Golden Club), Aditya (CFC) and Ankit (Golden FC) were declared the best forward, the best halfback, the best goalkeeper and the best stopper, respectively. Senior footballer Megh Raj distributed the prizes.

Sher-e-Punjab::: Golden Club, Chandigarh Police FC, Chd FC in semifinals :::
Golden Club (Group D), Chandigarh Police FC (Group B), Chandigarh FC (Group C) and Youngsters Club (Group A) qualified for the semifinals of the Chandigarh Senior Football Championship for Sher-e-Punjab Trophy being organised by the Chandigarh FA at the Sector 17 Football Stadium here today.
The semifinal line-up is: Chandigarh Police FC vs Golden Club (7 a.m.) and Chandigarh FC vs Youngsters FC (4.30 p.m.).
Chandigarh Police FC owed their 2-0 triumph over unlucky New Public School FC of Sector 18, to former Chandigarh Administration-run Chandigarh Football Academy product Rakesh who scored two brilliant goals and goalkeeper Mukesh who proved a stonewall and thwarted all NPSFC moves in the quarterfinal encounter. The NPS Football Club dominated the midfield. Their forwards initiated good moves but found Mukesh a hard nut to crack. Jasanpreet Singh, another product of Chandigarh Football Academy, made a couple of good tries. However, lady luck did not smile on NPSFC players' faces. Gianshwar of NPSFC also had a couple of sizzling tries at the Chandigarh Police FC goal. An alert Mukesh under the cage rose to the occasion to deny their rivals any opportunity to score. Displaying his class, Rakesh was given possession of the ball by Ajay Pal Singh in the middle. Rakesh moved up and with a 30-yarder foxed the NPSFC defence to give his team the lead in the 26th minute. Rakesh also showed opportunism in the 42nd minute. Following a corner kick, the ball rebounded to Rakesh who executed his shot without wasting any time and paved the way for Chandigarh Police FC's entry into the semi-final.
St Stephen's FC players today looked a bit off colour against Golden Club comprising players from Panjab University. Golden Club registered a 1-0 well-merited victory. The all-important goal was scored by Mojnath in the 26th minute. Sprightly Jagmohan Singh Negi logged a measured pass on the right. Mojnath sprinted and cut in before unleashing a powerful diagonal grounder. Stephen's goalkeeper Sudhir Saini had no chance to challenge Mojnath. Golden Club had an opportunity to double the score in the 28th minute. This time his angular shot from the left missed the goal as the ball went out with a narrow margin. Hardworking Jagmohan Singh Negi of Haryana State Industrial Developement Corporation which has also raised a world-class volleyball team, spearheaded the Golden Club FC's attack. Whenever, the ball was in his possession, he gave a harrowing time to the St Stephen's FC defence.
In the last quarterfinal match, Chandigarh FC upset strong contenders Accountant General Haryana by late second-half goals. When it looked that the match will be extended to tie-breaker, Chandigarh FC struck two goals within a span of two minutes to seal AG Haryana's fate. First Deepak Hooda put his team ahead in the 68th minute and at the fag-end of the match, Bhupinder doubled the victory margin for his team.

::: Sesa Football Academy convocation :::
The fourth Sesa Football Academy convocation ceremony was held today at Sanquelim in Goa today. The SFA is proud of having currently their most successful season since formation about a decade ago. The SFA team are champions of the Goa First Division and hav gained promotion to the Goa Pro League, they won the Goa U18 tournament and are still in the title hunt at the Goa U20 Taca Trophy.
17 players graduated today with 13 being retained for the new Sesa FA pro league team, while Adil Khan is joining Sporting Clube de Goa while three are dropping out.
The new pro league team will be build around the 13 youngsters with 23 senior players to be signed to strengthen the squad ahead of their engagements. No foreigners would be signed initially with Anthony D'Souza as the chief coach and Ajay Acharya as his assistant. Dr NN Bhatikar will be the general manager, while former India goalkeeper Brahmanand Shankwalkar has been appointed the teams administrative head.
The Sesa FA pro league team will be housed in a separate establishment to be built at a cost of Rs 4 crore at Sirsaim to house 25 footballers in all. Something which will propeal Sesa back into the national fold.
Present on the occasion was AIFF General Secretary Alberto Colaco who stated that the Sesa Fotball Academy has been provisionally admitted to the I-League Division 2 for the 2008/09 season.

The Sesa Football Academy is a unit of Sesa Community Development Foundation, which is promoted by Sesa Goa Limited, with the objective of providing service to the community in their operational areas.
The Sesa group has rightly gone ahead to develop local talent since they closed down their then senior team in 1998 after not gaining promotion to the then National Football League and launched their Football Academy. Now a decade later their Academy boys have taken them back to the top of Goa football and they are placing a pro league team on top of this development tree to allow the players to develop even further under their known environment. Maybe the Tata Football Academy should think about such a step too.
A perfect model of talent development and a worthwhile investment!
