Match Report:
AFC report: East Bengal saw their chances of a place in the AFC Cup quarterfinals recede after the Indian side could only manage a goalless draw with Group B leaders Safa at Salt Lake Stadium on Wednesday. Defences dominated in a game of few chances with Safa coming closest to breaking the deadlock near the end of the first-half when Mohamad Khorhani deceived keeper Subrata Pal only for Anupam Sarkar to produce an excellent clearance. The result means the Lebanese side top the standings on nine points with one game to go while East Bengal trail their rivals by two points.
Syed Rahim Nabi had the game's first chance with just two minutes gone but the East Bengal striker's header from Ibe Gift's left-wing cross flew wide by a whisker. Alvito D'Cunha was next to try his luck for the home side after quarter of an hour as the skipper worked an opening for himself but his shot was weak and Safa keeper Nazih Tay easily collected. Ghanaian Bobby Prince then struck a long-range effort that flew narrowly over the bar for Safa before Tay did well to beat away Surkumar Singh's 25-yard volley. Sarkar then came to the rescue just before the interval when midfielder Khorani's goal-bound effort eluded Paul but the defender was on hand to prevent Safa taking the lead.
The second-half continued in much the same vein as the first with chances at a premium and Nabi limped out of the action with 20 minutes to go to be replaced by Snehashis Chakraborty. And the substitute immediately tested Tay with a low right-footed drive that was well blocked by the keeper after being put through by D'Cunha. The skipper, far and away East Bengal's best player, again forged another chance for Chakraborty with a cross from an overhead kick but the latter could not convert the header. That proved to be D'Cunha's last meaningful contribution as he was replaced by veteran Dipendu Biswas due to a hamstring strain.
East Bengal now travel to Yemen to take on Ahli Sana'a in their final Group B game knowing they need a victory and hope other results go their way if they are to progress to the last eight.

After three matches Mumbai FC now have seven points, which means fifth and sixth placed Pune FC and Indian Bank are still pointness so those two clubs cannot catch-up with the Mumbai-based start-up. Vasco meanwhile moved to four points and would ideally need another win from their two remaining matches to confirm promotion.

::: Goa's Nehru Stadium unavailable for I-League matches in October/November :::
Goans clubs in the second edition of the I-League will not be able to host their matches in in the Nehru Stadium in Margao due to a One-Day International Cricket match in November 2008. The ground will be blocked from October for a few weeks to prepare the wicket for the Cricket match as the ground has been booked by the Goa Cricket Association.
The Goa FA will try and make arrangements at their own Duler ground in Mapusa and the Tilak Maidan in Vasco as alternative venues within the state of Goa.
Goan team might be also scheduled to play more away then home matches in the period, while also neutral venues could be an option.
Sadly this once more shows that a football crazy state like Goa needs at least one football only venue of international standard.

::: Krishnendu Roy to coach West Bengal :::
Krishnendu Roy, a former Indian international, has been named coach of the West Bengal state team for the upcoming 62nd Santosh Trophy to be played in Srinagar and Jammu, Jammu&Kashmir. Roy will have former India goalkeeper Tarun Bose to work with as goalkeeping coach. As last seasons runners-up West Bengal has been seeded into the quarterfinal league. The probables have still to be named.

::: Football & seven other sports back to "Priority" status :::
Indian Hockey is in the news for all the wrong reasons at the moment, but there was something to cheer about for hockey, football and six other sports as the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports has recategorised eight sports disciplines and has upgraded them to the "Highest" to the "Priority" category. Besides the named hockey and football the other sports are Volleyball, Cycling, Swimming, Basketball and School Games.
"The recategorised sports disciplines will be eligible for greater international exposure. For the games, which have been upgraded from "Others" category to "Priority" category can now engage foreign coaches," the release said.
A small step for the Sports Ministry but a good one for Indian sports...

::: Barreto allowed to travel abroad :::
IANS report: Calcutta High Court Wednesday allowed Brazilian footballer Jose Ramirez Barreto, arrested at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International airport last month for carrying undeclared cash, to travel out of India for six weeks. Justice Asim Kumar Roy directed Barreto to furnish a bank guarantee of Rs.1.5 million and a bond of Rs.10,000 as a condition to reclaim his passport from the lower court. He was also asked to come back to India within six weeks.
The High Court asked the 31-year-old Brazilian striker to re-deposit his passport to the Barasat Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court in Calcutta's adjoining North 24-Parganas district within two day of his return. A senior Mohun Bagan Club official, Anjan Mitra, was the guarantor for Barreto.
The footballer was arrested at the airport here March 20 on the charge of travelling with excess foreign exchange totalling $20,500. He was arrested under the Customs Act prior to his boarding a Dubai-bound flight enroute to Brazil. Barreto was allowed to travel abroad by a West Bengal lower court April 7 on condition that he had to appear before the court May 25 to facilitate legal proceedings. Later, customs officials filed a revision petition in the Calcutta High Court last week, claiming that the district sessions judge did not have the authority to order the release of Barreto's passport.
Barreto, who plays for India's premier Mohun Bagan club, enjoys an iconic status in Kolkata. He reportedly gets Rs.6 million annually, making him the highest paid overseas footballer.

::: AIFF revise I-League Division 2 fixtures :::
The AIFF has revised the I-League Division 2 fixtures after last night fiasco with power problems with the floodlights at the Nehru Stadium, Guwahati. The local organisers, the Assam FA, are in an embarassing position and the national body decided to do away with evening matches of the final round to avoid further such instances. Matches would now kick-off at 15.15 IST each day with matches to be played upto May 4. Only on May 1 and either May 3 or 4 would there be two matches a day, which will be held at two separate venues. The dates and scheduling of the final round of matches would only be decided after Round 4 is played depending on the importance of matches.

Match Report:
AFC report: Two goals from Nigerian striker Ranty Martins Soleye steered Indian League champions Dempo SC to a 2-1 AFC Cup Group A win against Bahrain League winners Muharraq at the Manama National Stadium on Wednesday. Soleye opened the scoring after 11 minutes before crucially doubling the lead two minutes after the hour mark before Brazilian striker Leandson Da Silva converted a 77th minute penalty for Muharraq. Dempo's second win of the competition sees the I-League side move to within a point of group leaders Muharraq and Al Ansar with just two games remaining after the Lebanon champions recorded a 2-0 victory over Sur.
The visitors opened the scoring with just 11 minutes on the watch as Robert Silva's free-kick was flicked on by by Chidi Edeh for Soleye to net from close range. Muharraq came close to snatching an instant response as Leandson Da Silva volleyed over the crossbar four minutes later before Abdulla Omar also shot over midway through the first half. The home side continued to press for an equaliser and should have drawn level but Dempo's goalkeeper made several crucial interventions - the best coming in the first minute of stoppage time as he diverted Abdulla Omar's close range shot away from danger.
Muharraq held a siege to the Dempo goal in the second half and came within a whisker of equalising a minute before the hour mark as Jaycee John's well-struck effort rattled off the crossbar before being scrambled clear by Dempo defender John Dias. The home side were made to pay for their wasted opportunities as Dempo doubled their lead three minutes later as Soleye's first time volley from Silva's free-kick found the back of the net. Muharraq continued to press for a breakthrough and a way back into the game and finally pulled a goal back with 13 minutes remaining as Da Silva made no mistake from the spot after Domnic Noronha had upended substitute striker Mohamed Jaafar. Dempo should have regained their two goal cushion in the first minute of stoppage time as Soleye wasted an opportunity to complete his hattrick as the Nigerian was denied by Muharraq goalkeeper Saye Mohamed Jaafar.

Match Report:
AFC report: Al Wihdat revived their AFC Cup chances with a crucial 4-2 Group B victory over East Bengal at Saltlake Stadium on Wednesday. All six goals came in the first-half as the visitors were pegged back twice before eventually establishing an advantage they would never relinquish.
Rafat Ali gave Al Wihdat a fifth-minute lead before Syed Rahim Nabi equalised for Alok Mukherjee's side six minutes later. Ali netted his second of the game after 23 minutes only for East Bengal's Edmilson Marques to once again level the scores four minutes later. Parity did not last long, however, as Hassan Abdel Fattah bagged a quickfire brace to put Al Wihdat firmly in the ascendancy. Fattah gave the Jordanians the lead for a third time on the half-hour mark and bagged his second three minutes later.
East Bengal could not find a way back into the contest after the break and their task was made even tougher with the 76th-minute dismissal of Edmilson after picking up a second yellow card.
The result avenged Al Wihdat's 2-0 victory in Amman two weeks ago and throws the Group B qualification race wide open.

Match Report:
A last-gasp goal by skipper Xavier Vijayakumar handed Hindustan Aeronautics Limited SC a chance of making the final phase of the I-League Division 2 and while doing that also raised hope of local outfit Pune FC who with a win against State Bank of Travancore could make it to Guwahati, while today's opponents ONGC's run end in injury time.
Playing against an equally determined ONGC, the Bangalore-based team aided by Dada Nabeel's solo efforts opened up a 2-0 advantage at half-time. Displaying fine skills Dada netted both his goals in identical fashion, dribbling past a charging ONGC custodian Rajat Ghosh Dastidar.
ONGC returned charging in the second half. Eight minutes into the second half Nigerian Chukwekere N Henry pulled one back and in by the 74th minute HAL found all their efforts nullified through Kaushik Bose. A cracking shot by Bose ended up at the back of the net leaving 'keeper Gumpe Rime rooted to the ground.
With the game seeming to end in a draw HAL had other ideas. With four minutes of injury time added Xavier Vijayakumar into the last minute of the game capitalized on a pass supplied by Alesha Shameki to dash ONGC's hopes.
HAL finished their Group A engagements with 6 points the same as ONGC but due to a superior goal difference (11 goals to 6) are in the driver's seat. A win for Pune FC against SBT on Saturday would mean Pune FC moving on, while a draw would help HAL.

    IndianFootball.Com celebrates its 10th anniversay!

::: IndianFootball.Com CELEBRATES ITS 10th ANNIVERSARY ::: 10th ANNIVERSARY of IndianFootball.Com
IndianFootball.Com, India's Premier Football Site, celebrates its 10th ANNIVERSARY today.
IndianFootball.Com was founded on April 10, 1998 by Arunava Chaudhuri, an expatriate Indian born and bred in Germany. Since its start IndianFootball.Com has been the only real source for Indian football information on the web, not only focussing on a club or state but trying to bring as much as possible of football from across India to the footballing world.
The website started off with a single page with basic information on Indian football and a simple text headline in 1998.
From a one man team IndianFootball.Com has grown into an editorial team of 19 editors/correspondents based across the globe, led by Chaudhuri and Chris Punnakkattu Daniel. The main base is still in Germany plus Bangalore, Calcutta, Kochi, Mumbai, New Delhi & Pune in India and international branches in Dubai and North America.
The site grew in its quality and quantity over the last 10 years and the logo made no exception! The current IndianFootball.Com logo was designed by our Editor-in-Chief & Creative Director Chris Punnakkattu Daniel in 2006. The logo is a combination of a traditional logo with elements of modern artwork and helped us to create a new professional corporate identity.
IndianFootball.Com does not only restrict itself to journalistic work, but is actively involved in the developing process of Indian football.
Among other things IndianFootball.Com has organised training camps for Indian national teams in Germany and helped European clubs with our expertise to tour India (e.g. FC Bayern Munich II). Further we arranged a Memorandum of Understanding between the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and the Deutsche Fußball-Liga (German Bundesliga).
On the occasion of our 10th ANNIVERSARY we would like to thank all of you - fans, players, administrators, journalists and friends around the globe - for your support and interest in IndianFootball.Com and its content!

Arunava Chaudhuri, Founder & Editor-in-Chief: "When I started the website in April 1998 I never thought that the site could become something as big as this. When I started the site my aim was to keep myself and others updated on Indian football. Through the website I have had experiences and been part of events in the last decade which I never thought I could have. I've gotten involved in numerous things in the development of Indian football which I hope we can enhance in the future. I would like to personally take this opportunity to thank all those of you who have helped us make IndianFootball.Com a success!"

Chris Punnakkattu Daniel, Editor-in-Chief & Creative Director: "We are delighted to complete 10 years in service. It's a great achievement for a non-commercial website in the fast growing world of the cyberspace! The 10 years were full of exciting experiences, lot of passion and a never-ending success story – IndianFootball.Com! IndianFootball.Com continues its run in the world of the beautiful game and we would like to contribute all our resources for the progress of Indian football like we did in the past! We would like to thank all supporters from the past to the present for helping us to achieve this landmark and we hope to even increase the quality and quantity of our coverage and services."

We have launched a special mirror site on the occasion of our 10th anniversary to review the long and interesting way of IndianFootball.Com. The main feature is the "MY STORY" section, where our editors/correspondents tell their own special story! We hope you will enjoy the small special coverage!

Match Report:
A goal in each half by Liberian striker Theodore Sundey Wrobeh ensured Chirag United's entry to the next round of the I-League Division 2. Wrobeh was today on fire, his speed and agility was just too much for the Pune FC to handle.
Wrobeh opened his account in the first-half after Gouranga Dutta did the spade work. Changing ends, Pune FC desperate to make a match of a defeated situation conceded a penalty-kick. Setting off on his own Wrobeh ended up confronting goalkeeper Narshiman Balaji. The latter leaving charge, realizing that Wrobeh was smarter with a dodge that prompted Balaji to dive as a last ditch effort, which was to costly as Wrobeh hit the turf. While Balaji earned a yellow card, Wrobeh's got to his feet and score.
The game saw six yellow cards flashed. Ejike Chika Chime, Sasthi Duley, and Gouranga Dutta from Chirag along w
