::: 18th NYC Rolling Trophy - Bombay Boys, Kuwait Goans advance :::
by Gasper Crasto: Strong contenders Kuwait Goan Association, Bombay Boys, Curtoracares United and CRC Chinchinim advanced into the next round of the 18th edition of Navelim Youth Centre (NYC) Rolling Trophy Football Tournament being played at Salmiya Grounds.
Kuwait Goan Association (KGA) were in full control as they overcame a stiff challenge by Santos Football Club 2-1. Zico D' Souza, Teotonio Fernandes, Caridade and Christo Colaco excelled for KGA throughout the match. The experience of Santos' Darwin D' Cruz, Agnello Carvalho and goalkeeper Rosario Colaco could do little in the first half of play as KGA pumped in two quick goals through striker Andre Dias and Adelio Fernandes. Datta Narvenkar pulled one back for the losers.
But despite dominating much of the contest, KGA was forced to rely on stopper back Teotonio Fernandes and goalkeeper Concessao Rodrigues for sensational saves late into the match as Santos threatened an unlikely comeback.
On Ground A, Bombay Boys Sports Club scrambled past enthusiastic youngsters Paradiso Sports Club 4-3 via the tie-breaker. Paradiso dominated the entire match but failed to penetrate into the Bombay defense.
In the first quarter of play Bombay Boys attacked from the wings but Paradiso defence showed lot of nerve to let anything past them. Paradiso nearly scored in the 20th minute, but Jude D'Costa's header off Aston Fernandes' cross went wide. A minute later, Roland Fernandes had another chance but his shot was saved by Bombay goakeeper Adrian Goes who shone in the match above all the Bombay Boys players.
Paradiso came close to scoring in the second half but were denied again by the Bombay Boys keeper who dived sharply to his left to block a close-range shot from Roland.
Bombay Boys were all on target in the tie-breaker scoring through Anthony D'Costa, Seby Fernandes, Sanjiv Naik and Lazin Fernandes. Paradiso scored through Assumption Rodricks, Manesh and Manoj while Steven Correia and Christi Menezes failed in their attempts.
The other match played between Veterans and CRC Chinchinim also went into tie-break with the latter winning 4-2.
Veterans produced several attacking moves within a space of minutes in the first quarter. Their ever impressive strikers Robin Fernandes and Casmiro D'Souza provided a string of crosses from both flanks. Goalkeeper Anthony Fernandes came to Chinchinim's rescue when he blocked a header from Veterans' Noel Pinto following a cross by Cipriano Gonsalves.
Chinchinim threatened only intermittently but in the late second half a powerful shot from Joseph Melcon looked goal-bound until Veterans' goalkeeper Kamal Basha managed to tip off the ball over the bar.
In the tie-breaker, Chinchinim scored through Valent Fernandes, Felix Pereira, Ronald Sequeira and Godwin Fernandes. Only Colin Figueira and Michael Godinho of Veterans could hit past Chinchinim goalkeeper Anthony who is famous in Kuwait as a tie-breaker specialist for the last several seasons. Anthony blocked the kick of Veteran stalwart Teddy Pinto while Sandy Tavares shot out.
In another match Curtorcares United continued their grand run into the NYC Rolling Trophy thrashing one of the oldest and respected clubs in Kuwait - United Goans Centre 7-0. Curtorcares scored at will through Anthony Furtado, Jose Cardozo, Zico Fernandes (2 goals), Alex Fernandes and substitute R.V. Murthy (2 goals).
The next round promises a spectacle for spectators as two Kerala teams - Kerala Challengers and Fahaheel Bros take on each other; while host and 6 time champions Navelim Youth Centre take on the finalists of NYC Trophy for the last 3 consecutive years - AVC Overseas Association.
GROUND A: Kerala Challengers vs Fahaheel Bros (7:00 am) // DHL vs Santos United (8.30 am)
GROUND B: Navelim Youth Centre vs AVC Overseas Association (7:00 am) // Bombay Boys vs Don Bosco (8.30 am)

India's prestigious annual football awards, the "IndianFootball.Com Awards", is reaching the final days of its voting for the 2007 edition. The last day of voting will be December 31, 2007!
The participation, interest and feedback so far has been more than outstanding and has reached new heights compared to the last few editions of the "IFC Awards"!
The first-ever "IndianFootball.Com Awards" poll was held in 2002, when fans around the world voted for the top performers of the 2001/02 season. The voting started with five categories in 2002, while two more different categories have been added in the 5th edition in 2006. The seven categories are INDIAN PLAYER of the Year, FOREIGN PLAYER of the Year, ROOKIE (NEWCOMER) of the Year, PIO (Player of Indian Origin) of the Year, COACH of the Year, TEAM of the Year, GLOBAL PLAYER of the Year.
The "IndianFootball.Com Awards" are the only of its kind, where fans, journalists, players and officials reward the best of the best.
Until now, the Awardees have only been mentioned on IndianFootball.Com and we tried hard to organise an Awards Gala for the 2006 edition to present trophies to the winners. Sadly things didn't work like planned and IndianFootball.Com was forced to honour the Awardees online once again.
We are looking forward to finally organise an Awards Gala for the 2007 edition! We would like to make the "IndianFootball.Com Awards 2007" gala evening a glamorous, unforgetable event for the Indian football community - the fans and their stars.

::: 18th NYC Rolling Trophy - Curtorcares United, Kuwait Goans move ahead :::
Curtorcares United stunned star studded United Friends Club 4-0 on a cold and windy Friday morning while formidable GOA Maroons lost out in the first round to Kuwait Goan Association 2-0 in the 18th Edition of NYC Rolling Trophy tournament being played at Salmiya Grounds, Salmiya in Kuwait City.
The NYC Rolling Trophy played under the auspices of Kuwait Indian Football Federation is in the 18th year. The matches are officiated by Indian Football Referees Association.
It proved stars don't rule the game in Kuwait Indian football as UFC's 'star footballers' such as Sarto Baptista, Phillip Ferrao, Jose Rod, Agnelo Fernandes (Mam) and evergreen goalkeeper Olavo Monteiro succumbed to a toothless defeat at the hands of Curtorcares whom they had defeated 3-1 last year in the same tournament. Young Zico Fernandes was the live-wire for Curtorcares upfront. He broke into the UFC defence repeatedly and scored 2 quick goals while Lawrence Furtado and substitute Padekaran accounted for the other two. Roshan D'Souza was the rock in Curtorcares' defence and also helped create chances as UFC dominated major part of the game after the first goal.
It is not many times that the four-time champions GOA Maroons have bow out of any tournament in Kuwait in the first round. In temperatures as low as 12° C, Maroons started with a quick passing game and put Kuwait Goan Association under pressure right from the start. But despite Maroons' control of possession KGA's Vico D'Souza, Christo Colaco and Russel Rodrigues looked dangerous with their solo runs. Andre Dias gave the much needed lead for KGA and added another one to the score to clinch the match. Maroons' Jerry D'Souza who came in place of Deryk Fernandes showed lot of eagerness to equalize. However, KGA were able to use the runs of bubbling Zelito Cardozo and Jimmy Goveia to relieve pressure on their defence. Referee Richard Dixon gave marching orders to KGA's Remedio Fernandes for a second consecutive offence.
One of the strongest teams in the tournament, KGA will now meet Santos FC in the next round. The forthcoming game will gather high interest in the team.
In another match, spirited Veterans SC put it past Malayalee Arts and Sports to advance to the next phase. Both teams appeared equal throughout the match although Veterans were steadier in front of the goal and deservedly won the game. Striker Robin Fernandes and Jeffrey Rodrigues scored for the winners. Malayalee Arts and Sports played their hearts to get back into the game with outstanding play by Mujeeb, Abdul Rehman, Niyas and Firoz. The youngsters excelled throughout the match.
A goal each from the boots of Custodio Ataide, Ratan Dogra and Steven Rodrigues made the scoreboard look decent for Don Bosco Oratory as they showed the door to debutants Goan Entertainment Club with 3 goals to nil. Early pressure failed to produce shots on target at either ends. Goan Entertainment used all the tactics in the book to defend their citadel. Don Bosco shot into the lead through a combined move by Victor D'Costa, Sainath and Roshan Dias. Enthusiasm seems to be the hallmark of the young Don Bosco players as they stake their claim to win another match.

::: AIFF AGM: Sunil Chetri named "Indian Footballer of the Year 2007" :::
The AIFF held their Annual General Meeting at Football House, Dwarka on the outskirts of New Delhi today. Numerous issues were discussed and sorted, but one of the main issues on the agenda remains unsolved - the issue of I-League players not playing in local leagues.
The AIFF's AGM unanimously endorsed the note circulated to the State FA's pertaining to the National Team Plan and Local League involvement of players and I-League involvement of players. However, to work it out in a proper manner for all other details, a core group has been formed, who will submit their report before January 31, 2008 to the AIFF President for an arrangement that will ultimately fulfill the cause of the National Team's preparation and to protect the Domestic Leagues in a competitive order.
The Group will be chaired by AIFF vice-president and technical committee chairman CR Viswanathan and will have AIFF vice-president Subrata Dutta, AIFF General Secretary Alberto Colaco, GFA Secretary Savio Massias, IFA Secretary Utpal Ganguli and representatives of I-League and second division teams. While KM Azhar Hussain (WIFA, Maharashtra secretary), KP Sunny (Kerala FA secretary), Inder Singh (Punjab FA secretary) and Krishna Narayan (Karnataka FA secretary) will be the special invitees in the Core Group.
The "Indian Footballer of the Year 2007" was announced with JCT striker Sunil Chetri winning the award!
Chetri won the award ahead of defender Mahesh Gawli and midfielder Climax Lawrence, both fellow internationals who ply trade football for Dempo SC.
Chetri received the award for his outstanding performances in the 11th NFL for his club and in the "ONGC" Nehru Cup for the national team.
The AFC has provisionally granted India the right to hold the 2008 and 2010 editions of the AFC Challenge Cup, The tournament first held last year as a 16 team event in Bangladesh would be a eight team tournament from the next edition onwards with North Korea, Turkmenistan, Myanmar and India automatically in the tournament as the top four nations, while 16 other nations would play qualifiers to decide the four other spots.
Originally the tournament was planned to be played in Taiwan in early-March 2008, but they backed out while the AFC tried to get Thailand to host the event, but they declined. Now India has come into the fray and would like to host it in August 2008 either in Delhi or Hyderabad. An AFC inspection team will visit India in January 2008 before a final decision is taken on dates and venue.
Also India were lucky to avoid to play qualifiers for the 2011 AFC Cup as a number of countries backed out and only Lebanon will face Maldives in a Round 1 qualifier. The AIFF president Das Munshi later wrongly said at a press conference, "The seeding is not merely a recognition but a vote of confidence in the country's football fraternity."
With the AFC Challenge Cup postponed from March to likely August 2008, the AIFF can finish the inaugural I-League in one go. The final two rounds originally planned for late-March 2008 would now be held after Round 16 in February 2008 with the league over by February 22/23. The end of the I-League would be followed by the Super Cup.
The AIFF has finally decided to allot Jammu&Kashmir to organise and host the 62nd Santosh Trophy (Senior National Football Championship) in May 2008.
This comes after an inspection team visited the valley in the week to make a final assessment.
The AIFF also approved FIFA and AFC projects in the country. Sikkim and Karnataka would get basic infrastructure as part of the FIFA Goak project while Delhi would finally launch its City Elite league in 2008 under the AFC' Vision India programme.
The AIFF is also set to launch two football academies in the country. One is being planned for Gurgaon, on the outskirts of Delhi, with the help from the Haryana government and funding from ONGC; while another Academy is set to come-up in Goa with an undisclosed corporate house as partner. The MoU would be signed on January 4, 2008.
The AIFF is also looking to improve the standard of women's football in India. The AIFF has plans to introduce a Metro Cup for women's teams from the four metropolis - Calcutta, Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai. Later the tournament could be extended to Bangalore, Bhubaneshwar, Lucknow and other cities.
Also from next year onwards the Under-21 Women's Nationals for the Rani Jhansi Cup would be introduced. The tournament would be held first with zonals and then national finals.
Meanwhile on the occasion of the AIFF's 70th anniversary the federation has decided to induct five distingushed individuals as honorary life time members. These include former internationals Sailen Manna, PK Banerjee, Chuni Goswami, and Syed Nayeemuddin plus Santosh Mohan Dev, a former FIFA referee and Union Minister.

::: Lakshmi Mittal buys 20% shareholding in English Championship side Queens Park Rangers :::
London-based English Championship side Queens Park Rangers FC announced today that the Mittal Family has taken a 20 percent stake in QPR holding.
It comes as a surprise move that the Mittal Family invests in the bottom of the Championship table club. But they are now one of the significant shareholders at QPR besides Bernie Ecclestone, Flavio Briatore and Sarina Capital. Formula 1 boss Ecclestone is a personal friend of the Mittal's and might have been an influence in the decision to invest in the west London club.
Insiders have known for some time that Mittal wanted invest in an English club. Earlier there had been rumours that Mittal would invest in English Premier League clubs Birmingham City, while there was insider talk in football circles that Mittal could invest in Arsenal London.
Speaking on behalf of Queens Park Rangers FC, the Board of Directors, said: "This investment in QPR by the Mittal Family is a great stepping-stone towards the future development of the Club and supports the ambition of the current shareholders to reach the Premier League in the near future."
"The new capital being invested in QPR will help fund the programme that is needed to help us achieve this target."
Lakshmi Mittal will be represented on the club's board by his son-in-law Amit Bhatia. On behalf of the Mittal Family, Amit Bhatia said: "The Family is excited about becoming involved with Queens Park Rangers Football Club."
"As a family, we love sport and particularly enjoy English football, and alongside Bernie and Flavio, we hope that we can improve the Club's performance, with the ultimate ambition of a place in the Premier League."
Mittal was ranked the fifth-richest man in the world this year by Forbes magazine, which estimated his worth at US$32 billion in August 2007.
It is good to see that finally an investor of Indian origin has bought into an English club. One will have to see if there are any effects on India and its football.

::: EPL's Arsenal FC now to work with Indian youths :::
Following close on the heals of their English Premier League rivals Manchester United's Soccer School visiting Goa in October 2007, London-based Arsenal FC are set to send in their youth coaches to India for a coaching programme in partnership with Tata Tea.
Tea manufacturer, Tata Tea, has taken the initiative and the programme will be known as the Tata Tea Arsenal Soccer Stars Programme, which will involve children in the age group of 10 to 15 years. And 15 children will be finally selected for attend an Arsenal training camp in Britain as well as entry to the much awaited Arsenal International Soccer Festival in London in August 2008.
As a part of the programme, school tournaments will be held in nine cities - Calcutta, Delhi, Bangalore, Calicut, Goa, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Bhubaneshwar and Shillong - from January 11 to May 4. The final round will be held in Calcutta May 9-10, where 16 teams from nine cities will take part.
From the tournament, 30 boys will be selected for a two-week and given two weeks' coaching by Arsenal coaches in Calcutta. This will be followed by a final selection of 15 boys, who will be trained in Britain.
Announcing this, Tata Tea executive director Sangeeta Talwar said, "We have selected soccer, which has a lot of interest among teenagers and what better way to bring this awakening but to associate ourselves with a world premier soccer club - Arsenal."
Adrian Ford, Arsenal FC's commercial director, said, "At Arsenal, our aim is always to identify and encourage young talent for the betterment of the game. We are glad that Tata Tea has taken the initiative. Soccer Stars is a fantastic platform for budding young footballers and we hope this will contribute in propagating this wonderful sport further in India."
::: Kerala town loves football, but stands stay empty :::
IANS report: This Kerala city is mad about football, but it does not show on the stands any more. The crowds have thinned.
"Earlier, there used to be long queues at the ticket counter. People used to come as early as 4 a.m. to book a seat. I just walked in and purchased my ticket," says 67-year-old K. Balachandran, who was at the Corporation Stadium to watch an I-League (Indian premier league) tie between Viva Kerala and Salgaocar Goa Saturday.
"The quality of the game has declined. People watch European football on television every day. It is reason enough for one to become disillusioned with the kind of football played here," says Balachandran.
Balachandran is right as the first I-League game here brought only 7,000 to the stadium, which can seat 50,000 spectators.
However, secretary of Kozhikode District FA AM Najeeb is optimistic. "In this match, we mopped up Rs.110,000 through sale of tickets at the gate. But the important thing is that Viva Kerala won the game. This is a victory people wanted. Now we expect a steady increase in spectators," he said.
"We will host eight more I-League games, to be held at intervals, through March next year. We expect a good crowd if Viva performs well," Najeeb exuded confidence.
The slide in the craze for the local game also may have something to do with the absence of regular events. "Earlier, Sait Nagjee national tournament was a regular feature. The last Nagjee tournament was held nearly 10 years ago," Najeeb said.
"Ten years ago, KDFA used to organise tournaments regularly. It is not so any more because organising a tournament of that scope requires Rs.30 million. It's a risky affair. Now, we only host tournaments sanctioned by the Kerala FA and the AIFF," Najeeb said.
"For the I-League matches, KDFA spends only on refreshments and local transport of players. All other things are being taken care of by the sponsor, the ONGC," he said.
Lack of infrastructure is another problem. The floodlights at the Corporation Stadium have been in disrepair for long. "If the lights are installed, the matches can be scheduled for late evenings. This will bring in good crowd. We can even bring foreign teams," Najeeb said.

::: GFA suggests AIFF form players' pool for national duty :::
PTI report: The Goa FA has asked the AIFF to handpick 35-50 players for national duty and bar them from playing in state leagues.
The GFA's suggestion was in response to a letter from AIFF president Priyaranjan Dasmushi which desired that all I-League players be barred from playing in local leagues and other tournaments barring the Federation Cup. The AIFF president also wanted local leagues to be run concurently with its premier I-League.
The GFA also wanted I-League and state leagues to be run concurrently from September to April, with the former played on Saturdays and Sundays, and the latter on weekdays.
GFA has proposed that I-League teams, which also play in the state league, should not be demoted.
It also wanted AIFF to keep registeration open for five I-League players who are playing in the state league.
The GFA's four-point counter to the AIFF chief was made after it convened an emergency meeting here last evening which was attended by all eight professional clubs, its spokesperson Antonio Botelho said.

::: Dempo coach lashes out at AIFF's foreigners' policy :::
IANS report: Dempo coach Armando Colaco criticised the AIFF's decision to allow clubs four foreigners for the I-League. He called the decision as a 'backward step' in Indian football.
"Till few days back they (AIFF) were thinking of reducing the number of foreigners in the league. I am bit surprised with their decision of increasing the number (of foreigners) in the I-League," said Coalco, after his team was held to a goalless draw by JCT, Phagwara in the sixth round of the I-League here Sunday at the Ambedkar Stadium.
The AIFF has allowed clubs to recruit four foreigners for the inaugural I-League, one more than what it was in the erstwhile National Football League. But the clubs can only field only three foreigners in any match. The decision of having four foreigners goes against the federation's stated aim to reduce foreigners in Indian football in order to encourage local talent.
"I have not recruited a fourth foreigner and I think increasing the number of foreigners will not help the cause of Indian football. I feel it is a step backward in development. I think instead of the foreigners if we could have a local player, even on the bench, it will benefit local talent," said Colaco.
"If we want to develop Indian football then we have to build a sound youth development programme. And we have to promote the local talent and it will only be possible when we give them chance to play," he added.
The Dempo coach also said that he didn't find any logic in allowing recruitment of four foreigners but restricting to three the number of foreigners in a single match.
"Why will a team recruit an extra foreigner, if the player has to cool his heels on the bench. There is no logic in it as clubs spend huge amounts in recruiting foreign players. I think ideally they should have allowed registering all the four foreigners with the fourth players coming in as a replacement for the any other foreigner,' he said.
