Match Report:
Salgaocar SC posted an easy win over Viva Kerala to book a place in the quarterfinals of the 120th "Osian's" Durand Cup. The Goan side looked well organised and were in control of the match from the beginning. The Salgaocar midfielders and the forwards played a major role in producing this result. The match was expected to be a close encounter, but the Kerala-side never looked dangerous and their defence couldn't handle the Goan forward line.
Salgaocar took an early lead in the 14th minute when Shylo Malswam Tulunga wonderfully volleyed home a cross by Jerose Oliveira. Salgaocar looked better and better as the match progressed and had more ball possession on their side. Tulunga, fonded called "Mama", was the star performer for the Goans, while netting two goals and setting-up one for Nigerian striker Felix Chimaokwu.
Chimaokwu scored in the 37th minute displaying brilliant skill, while converting a good cross from the former East Bengal midfielder Tulunga. Salgaocar increased their lead in the 40th minute as a left-footed freekick by Nicholas L Rodrigues found its way into the Viva Kerala goal.
After the lemon break Viva Kerala tried their best to get back into the match, but they didn't manage more than a consolation goal in the 74th minute. A cross by Viva midfielder Santa Saikhom Singh was misjudged by Salgaocar goalkeeper Marcus Basumatari and went into the nettings. Viva Kerala missed a chance to further reduce the margin in the 82nd minute when P Sajesh missed a golden opportunity.
The combination of Felix Chimaokwu and Shylo Malswam Tulunga produced the fourth goal, when Chimaokwu's cross from the left wing was easily netted in by Tulunga in the 90th minute.

Match Report:
JCT, Phagwara thrashed Assam Rifles, Tezpur 5-0 to set-up a clash with Salgaocar SC in the quarterfinals of the 120th "Osian's" Durand Cup. JCT, without their Indian internationals Sunil Chetri and Potsangbam Renedy Singh, sent out a warning message to all teams in the tournament with a convincing win. Assam Rifles showed some good skills and were better than the final result would suggest, but they lacked the sting in attack and had a shaky keeper in Lokeshwar Singh.
JCT captain Julius Irabor Akpele opened the scoring in the 16th minute, while heading in a corner. Assam Rifles fully relied on seasoned Akum Ao, but the striker was not allowed too much space by the JCT defence and just had some half-hearted chances. The Tezpur-side conceded their second goal when Brazilian Eduardo 'Edu' Escobar scored from a Marcos Pereira corner in the 34th minute to give JCT a 2-0 lead.
Eduardo 'Edu' Escobar added a second goal to his tally when Praveen Kumar was brought down by the Assam Rifles defender Naoba Singh in 53rd minute. The referee awarded a penalty to the Phagwara-side and the Brazilian made no mistake and slotted in the ball. It was indeed Edu's night and the Brazilian import scored his third goal from a 25 yard free-kick leaving the Assam Rifles goalkeeper astonished. In the 88th minute Edu once again found the target, while converting a Jaswinder Singh cross on the second attempt to complete his hattrick.
JCT will now face Salgaocar SC in the quarterfinals. Striker Sunil Chetri will be joining JCT in the next match after his national duty, while Renedy Singh won't be part of the squad for the whole duration of the tournament due to an injury.

Match Report:
In the first match of the day Churchill Brothers SC thrashed Hindustan Aeronautics Limited SC 4-1. Churchill captain Odafe Onyeka Okolie scored all the four goals and displayed an inspiring performance. This match will be a boost to the Goan team as the tournament progresses. Churchill could be considered as one of the favourites to clinch the title along with Mahindra United and last years champion Dempo SC.
Churchill Brothers, with a mix of young and experience, combined well and were in control of the match right from the beginning. Both their strikers, captain Odafe Onyeka Okolie and Mboyo Iyomi, kept on pressurising the HAL defenders throughout the match.
The Goans took the lead in the 15th minute, when Okolie utilized from a cross by Chitrasen Chandam Singh and went past two defenders to net the ball into the goal. Churchill Brothers kept playing attacking football and showed several good moves, but were not able to increase their lead in the first half. There was some concern to HAL when their defence made a major error and Okolie unleashed a shot in the 36th minute, which hit the cross-bar and went wide.
In the second half Churchill Brothers looked more focused and were in full control of the game. Odafe Onyeka Okolie's skills and speed were once again enough to shake-up the HAL defence. Okolie scored his second goal of the game in the 58th minute from the penalty spot, after he was brought down in the box by Sumit Thapa.
HAL striker Bimal Minz gave the Airmen some glimpses of hope in the 65th minute, when he reduced the margin. But his goal was not enough for the Bangalore-side to come back and to tackle Churchill. Instead Okolie further increased the lead in the 79th minute. The Nigerian striker utilized once again from a defensive error and even made his fourth goal with a stunning 25-yard shot which was too good for the HAL goalkeeper.

::: World Cup qualifier forces reschedule of Man Utd Soccer Schools project :::
Man Utd Soccer Schools Press Release: A decision by the AIFF to move India's crucial World Cup qualifier against Lebanon tomorrow to the Nehru Stadium has meant a change in the timings of Manchester United Soccer Schools' project which is being held there this week.
All children who were due to attend the assessment programme on Tuesday 30th October have been asked to arrive at the same time on Wednesday 31st October instead.
In the first three days the pilot project has seen about three and half thousand children and already one hundred and twenty three children have been selected for further assessment and coaching.
The rescheduling of the match will mean that IMG Events staff have to work through two nights to remove all the hoardings from the pitch and then to rebuild the testing area ready for Wednesday morning.
Manchester United Soccer Schools International Development Director Dale Hobson said "This was totally unexpected but when we got the call from the AIFF we said we would do everything we could to help. This is already an extremely complex operation because it involves assessing hundreds of children from all over Goa every day. This has just come as an extra challenge, but we have a great team of people here and we know we can keep the project on track. We are absolutely determined that no child will miss their opportunity because of the rescheduling of this game."
The pilot project will finish at the end of the week by which time 12 young players will have been selected for further training at Manchester United Soccer Schools in the UK next Summer.

::: FIFA World Cup: Rotation ends in 2018 :::
FIFA Press Release: As from 2018, the hosting of the FIFA World Cup™ will cease to be rotated. Under the chairmanship of President Joseph S. Blatter, the FIFA Executive Committee today - 29 October 2007 - unanimously passed a decision to abandon the principle (originally introduced in the year 2000) of rotating the men's World Cup from continent to continent. The confederations whose associations have hosted the two preceding World Cups will not be eligible to bid, however. Consequently, all the associations from Asia, North and Central America and the Caribbean, Oceania and Europe may bid for the 2018 FIFA World Cup™.
One of the reasons for changing the rotation principle was the fact that only one candidate - Brazil - is still in contention for the 2014 FIFA World Cup that is due to be awarded tomorrow, Tuesday, 30 October 2007. The executive stated explicitly that eligibility to host the World Cup should no longer be restricted to the rotation principle as it was also in FIFA's interests to maintain true competition among several candidates. The provision regarding the exclusion of bids from associations belonging to the two previous host confederations will require an amendment to the FIFA Statutes at the 2008 FIFA Congress.
Meanwhile FIFA president Joseph S. Blatter revealed at a press conference that several countries have already shown their interest to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Countries named by the FIFA president were Australia, China, England, Mexico, Netherlands & Belgium (joint bid) and the USA.

City FC, Delhi 0-4 New Delhi Heroes
Goals: 0-1,0-3 Harvinder Singh (18',30'), 0-2 Harrison (28'), 0-4 Gyan Moyon Thapa (33').

Match Report:
Osian's New Delhi Heroes literally made the match seem one-sided in their last qualifying encounter with the SAIL City FC at the ongoing 120th Osian's Durand Cup 2007. They stormed into the main draw with a thumping 4-0 victory.
What was supposed to be a do or die match turned out to be a cake-walk for the Osian's New Delhi Heroes as they were in complete command of the match from the word go. They surged ahead in the 18th minute riding on the goal scored by the very talented Harvinder Singh and ten minutes later in the 28th minute Harrison netted the ball. A spectacular third goal came in the 30th minute when Harvinder Singh struck again and soon after in the 33rd minute the fourth goal from the foot of Gyan Moyon decided the fate of the game. Osian's New Delhi Heroes led 4-0 during the lemon break.

::: DSA and Wanderland launches youth programme :::
The Delhi Soccer Association and Wanderland Inc. announced the launch of a grass root level and youth development programme for underprivileged and privileged school kids through qualified coaches under the Vision Delhi project.
To improve the standard of the game of football in Delhi's schools as well as Delhi state it is an appreciating step as far as Delhi football is concerned.
Wanderland as a key company devoted to the interests of kids have been involved in activities leading to their mental and physical development for over 5 years now! Wanderland will launch a programme for youth sports development after seeing the abysmal state of sports in general and sports for youth in particular.
More than hundred kids will be provided kits and shoes, besides transportation and refreshments, with credit to some individual and corporate support and largely funded by Wanderland Inc. itself.
Apart from these DSA will be organizing the 2nd DSA Wanderland Youth Soccer Camp for school teams during November and December 2007 as apart of the Vision Delhi project.
Commenting on this, DSA secretary Mr. NK Bhatia said: "It is an important project for us and we want to promote this game from the grass root level. Previously player's first used to play for school than college and than for clubs but know due to interstate transfers fewer players from Delhi are seen in the clubs. In order to check this and to raise the standard of football from the school level it's is necessary to work from the grass root level."

::: Baichung stays positive and says India can do it! :::
by WorldSpace / Total Sports Asia: India's football captain, Baichung Bhutia, says the national team are still optimistic despite trailing Lebanon 4-1 after the first leg of their World Cup qualifier in Saida. Baichung is a weekly guest on PLAY, India's only fully-dedicated sports radio station which can be found on Channel 520 on the WorldSpace Satellite Radio network.
Baichung usually gives PLAY his analysis on the preceding weekend's English Premier League matches but clearly, this week, his thoughts were much closer to home. Speaking ahead of this crucial second leg match, Baichung sounded confident of the team's chances.
"The preparation has been good. If you look at the (previous) game and the scoreline, it gives you a completely different picture. But at the moment, we've been working hard."
The second leg takes place on Sunday October 28 in Chennai but Baichung feels the 3-0 scoreline, that would see India go through, is perfectly possible.
"It will be a very difficult game but we are confident that we can get 3 goals. It's not going to be easy but hopefully, if everything goes perfectly, we can get 3 goals - it's definitely possible."
"There is pressure for us to win by the 3-0 margin but we've got to play our natural game and see what happens."
The Asian Football Confederation, felt that facilities at the usual Indian football hotbeds were not up to scratch so the Nehru Stadium in Chennai has been chosen as the venue for this match. Baichung concedes it will not quite be the same as in Goa, Kolkata or even Delhi but he approves of the ground.
"We might not have the same atmosphere... but I think ground-wise, weather-wise, the conditions are good though I don't feel they will give us any extra advantage."
On tactics for this match, Baichung pointed out specific areas the team needed to improve on if they wanted to advance in the qualifiers.
"It will be more attacking football but at the same time, we don't want to concede a goal because it will be impossible to get back into the match. We'll bring in a few more attacking players but our strategy and formation will be the same. I think we've really got to work on dead-ball situations and aerial balls. That's where we conceded most of the goals in Lebanon."
Baichung was given a chance to send a message to Indian football fans before this match and he was upbeat.
"We are positive and I'm sure the fans would stay positive as well. It's a difficult match to win by a 3 goal margin but at the same time it's not impossible. I think a little bit of luck is required as well - an early goal is going to help us in a big way. Sometimes there are matches when everything goes perfectly and I hope the 28th is going to be one of those matches for us."
Baichung ended the interview on a positive note.
"I feel we will win this match but the margin, well, I hope it will be 3-0, 4-1 or 5-1 but I think we will have a good performance and we will win."

::: The 3rd edition of the PIFA Skills Contest was won by Calvin Lobo :::
The PIFA Skills contest held at the St.Xavier's football ground on October 21 was attended by 209 children aged between 7-16 years from all over Mumbai
This contest was organised by PIFA and the entry was free of cost. It is aimed at identifying young talent especially from the less privileged strata of society. PIFA believes that the drive and determination to succeed in football will be found in these children and it is for us to nurture, guide and train them in the right method.
The format of the contest was similar to that organised by the Bobby Charlton Soccer & Sports Academy in Manchester. The children had to complete four tests before qualifying for the final test. The four elements of the game tested were - shooting, dribbling, passing and ball control. The tests had a very transparent scoring system and children progressed into the next test on achieving marks above the cut-off scores, 600 points after four tests.
Ajay Kajania and Rolfred Couthino held the record score of 800 points in 2005, Tejas Raut scored 770 points in 2006. David Beckham scored 1100 when he was 11 at Bobby Charlton Soccer School skills contest. This year the record was broken by winner - Calvin Lobo (11) from Beacon High and a PIFA Student at the Bandra center with a fantastic score of 960 points. The runner up was Ajil Almeida (16) from Holy Cross Convent School with a score of 890 points.
PIFA Director and UEFA licenced coach Nirvan Shah had this to say, "The contest is an ideal platform to discover talented youth such as Calvin Lobo and Ajil Almeida, both of them had the right temperament and could performed extremely well under pressure"
They top two won a goodies bag from NIKE.
The top 10 contestants will be sponsored by Dr.Francis Saldhana from the USA at their international camp to be held at Karnatak Sports from November 3 to 6.

Jaspreet and Pooja were more culprit in muffing the chances which came their way.

Earlier, DAV Senior Secondary School Club-8 finished third after beating Carmel Convent School, Sector 9 by 3-0. Kanchan (17th), Kamla (20th) and Neha (33rd) contributed one goal each for DAVSSS Club.

::: Zico talks about Indian football :::
Brazilian football legend Zico's comments about Indian football have come into sharp focus following India's 1-4 rout against Lebanon in an away World Cup qualifier last week. Zico, who led Japan to the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals in Germany, told the Mumbai-based All Sports Magazine in an exclusive interview that the Indian national team will have to improve a lot if they are to have ambitions in Asia. The extremely skilled midfielder who played in three World Cups, was basing his observations on Japan's qualifier against India in the lead up to the 2006 World Cup.
"The Indian national team was very young, they ran a lot but they were yet very innocent too, without quality... At any point of time, it was always easy for us (Japan) to control the match (in Kolkata). The Indian national team has to improve to have ambitions in Asia," he said in the interview published in the latest issue (October 2007) of All Sports Magazine.
Recalling his visit to the 'City of Joy' for the World Cup qualifier, Zico, who now coaches Turkish champion club Fenerbahce which is playing in the ongoing UEFA Champions League, said, "My experience was fantastic, the (Saltlake) stadium was very old, it reminded me of Maracanã back home. The reception was incredible, there were a lot of Indians shouting my name, carrying Brazilian flags. It was really a very beautiful party, and we won the match." He however regretted that he couldn't look around the city as he would have liked to as his team had to pack up and leave soon after.
In the interview Zico also speaks about Fenerbahce's chances in the ongoing Champions League, the star-studded teams and players who will light up the tournament, the Brazilian national team and the evolution of tactics in football. "I don't agree with certain methods such as the abusive use of fouls to break up plays. People should try to back great players, to valorize their talent and the artistry of play, not to prioritize the tactics," the highly skilled playmaker averred.

::: Goan Super Cup in November :::
The new Goan Super Cup would be held with the top four finishers of the ongoing Goa Pro League on November 15 and 18 at Duler ground and Tilak Maidan. League winners Dempo would face the team finishing fourth, while the second and third placed sides would face each other on November 15, while the two winners would face each other on November 18.

by Dr. Aniruddha Ghosh: The sleepy market town of Namchi in the mountains of South Sikkim, was unusually abuzz with football excitement from this morning. Namchi, 5500 ft above sea level, has an undeniable association with Indian football. It is houses the Namchi Sports Hostel, who nurse a football academy of repute. It also boasts of a football stadium, Alley Ground Stadium, renamed after Sikkim's most famous footballer, Baichung Bhutia .It is the only football stadium in India, named after a living soccer icon.
But today was something special. It was the finals of the All India Chief Minister's Cup 2007!
From the early afternoon, streams of people wound their way to the Baichung Stadium, to watch the finals, dubbed and promoted by the organizers as the 'Mini-SAF' Football tournament. One can hardly dispute the claim, for it was an international tournament with 13 teams from India, Nepal and Bhutan vying for the title honours. In the finals, local favourites Bhutan XI were to clash with Chirag United SC from Calcutta.
Namchi, in Bhutia language means 'sky - high'. But it wasn't the boys from Bhutan, but the fighting lads of the Calcutta outfit, Chirag United, who were sky high at Namchi in the finals. They trounced Bhutan XI 4-0 in a one sided final to lift the trophy.
Chirag dominated the match from the kick off, and had the title all sewn up, when they went 3-0 up at the breather. Nigerians, Louis Nigi Ebami and Theodore Sunday Wrobeh scored the first two goals. Shankar Oraon, a product of the SAIL-Mohun Bagan Football Academy, there after scored two goals, once in each half, to round off the tally!
It was an emphatic victory for Chirag United and further established their stake as one of the top notch football teams of the country. Incidentally it was the second tournament win for Chirag United this year. They had earlier lifted the century old Trades Cup in Calcutta at the start of the season.
The winners received the gorgeous trophy and Rs. 50,000 as prize money from the Sikkim Minister for Roads, DTL Lepcha. The Chirag striker, Theodore Sunday Wrobeh, was the highest scorer of the tournament, scoring five goals in three matches. The Chirag players had much to cheer, when Alokesh Kundu, on behalf of the officials, announced that the prize money was to be distributed among the victorious players. It was a good bonus for the team, ahead of the Pujas.
The team returns to Calcutta with the trophy on the morning of October 17.

::: Bhutan XI to clash with Chirag United in Finals :::
by Dr. Aniruddha Ghosh: Sikkim, West Bengal and Bhutan share territorial boundaries and a lot of socio-cultural interaction with each other. Thus fittingly maybe, the finals of the Sikkim Chief Minister's Cup 2007 will witness a clash between the Bhutan XI and Chirag United SC, West Bengal, to be played on the 15th of this month.
In the second semifinal of the tournament, played this afternoon at Namchi, Sikkim; Bhutan XI defeated Punjab Police, in the tie-breaker to set up the title clash with Chirag United. The two teams were locked 1-1 after the scheduled time, with Bhutan XI restoring parity after initially being a goal down. Punjab Police squandered not only two penalty kicks in the shoot out, but also their chance to figure in the finals of this prestigious tournament of the North-East.
The final promises to be an exciting affair. Chirag United, slowly but steadily, making their presence felt as the new third of the 'Big Three' football teams from Calcutta, will undoubtedly go all out to lift this Sikkim trophy, with a quasi-international flavour. This will put them at par, if not ahead of the team they are quietly displacing among the famed Calcutta triplet, Mohammedan Sporting, who recently won the Independence Cup in Assam.
The Chirag Coach for this tournament, Anjan Nath, exuded enough confidence, when contacted over phone this evening. Despite the non-availability of key midfielder Sasthi Duley, out of the finals due to a red card in the semis, he seemed confident of lifting the first trophy for his team in several months. With stopper Barun Oraon, goalie Subhash Goswami and striker Theodore Sunday Wrobeh having an excellent tourney, Anjan's confidence seems to be well placed.
But the Bhutan XI will be no push overs. Fresh from their victory over the tough Punjab Police outfit, they will play in the finals against a more fancied team, with a 'nothing to lose attitude'. This is what is worrying Anjan slightly.
Over all, the final promises to be a very exciting encounter! Will Chirag burn bright on Tuesday afternoon? Or will the Druk Dragon snuff out its flames? Let us all wait with baited breath!

::: Chirag United SC enter Finals of Sikkim Chief Minister's Cup :::
by Dr. Aniruddha Ghosh: Chirag United SC continued its' run of good football display this season, when they entered the finals of the Chief Minister's Cup being played at Namchi, Sikkim defeating a fighting CRPF by 2-0 in the first semifinal played today. Nigerian striker Theodore Sunday Wrobeh was once again the hero for Chirag, scoring once in each half, to take his team through to the finals. The first of his two goals came off a brilliant freekick. In the second half he latched onto a pass from midfielder Anjan Dey, before placing the ball beyond the reach of the CRPF custodian, into the net, for his and his team's second goal. Down 0-2, the CRPF boys came back strongly and earned a penalty, midway in the second half. But the Chirag goalkeeper, Subhash Goswami, playing only his second match of the season, brought off a brilliant save and prevented CRPF from reducing the lead. The match witnessed some rough football in the second half, and former India International Sasthi Duley of Chirag, who was otherwise having a brilliant tournament, was shown the red card, for a tough challenge. Chirag will definitely miss his services in the final on October 15, where they will meet the winners of the second semifinal to be played between Bhutan XI and Punjab Police tomorrow. The Chirag Coach for this tournament Anjan Nath, of course, is banking heavily on Theodore, for the finals. And why not? "Theo" is in brilliant form, having scored both the goals in Chirag's 2-1 victory over Sports' Authority of India XI, in the quarterfinals also. In fact Theo has scored all the four goals for his team in this tournament so far.

::: Stephen's face Carmel Convent in Mother Veronica Cup final :::
Formidable St Stephen's School, Sector 45 will meet strong contenders Carmel Convent of Sector 9 in the title clash of the Chandigarh Sub-Junior Girls Under-17 Football Championship for Mother Veronica Cup, being sponsored by Carmel Convent School, at the Sector 17 Football Stadium here tomorrow at 15.00 IST.
Playing a well-organised game in the semifinal today, St Stephen's School defeated a spirited Sacred Heart of Sector 26 by 2-0. The highlight of the semifinal encounter was a brilliant brace by inside striker Shikha Sharma. This prolific scorer has so far displayed her fine ball control and dribbling skills to outfox the rival defenders. By scoring two goals today, Shikha Sharma has become the leading scorer of the tournament. In two matches St Stephen's have played so far, Shikha Sharma has scored six goals, including the only hattrick of the tournament.
Shikha Sharma was also looking for opportunities to score. Against Sacred Heart, Sector 26, Shikha Sharma opened the account for St Stephen's School in the very first minute. Getting a possession of the ball in the middle, Shikha Sharma dribbled past a host of defenders before hitting the target with a powerful left footer which brooked no denial. Keeping their pressure, St Stephen's School struck again in the 17th minute. Inside right striker Shikha Sharma trapped a stray pass and with a solo effort banged home her second goal to end the challenge of Sacred Heart-26.
