MATCH REPORT:
India and Hong Kong, were very closely matched, though Hong Kong, China continually put India under pressure and in the 34th minute came close to a goal with a superb free kick by Cheung Kin Fung that was hastily cleared by India.
The Indians remained under pressure for most of the half. Even though possession was shared evenly between the two teams, most of the play occurred in India’s half of the pitch.
After a slow game India suddenly upped the stakes in their clash against Hong Kong, when in the 89th minute Naduparambil Pappachan Pradeep scored what must be the goal of the evening. Pradeep fired an incredible shot from more than 30 metres out to power the ball just over the 'keeper's head.
It looked like India was sure of the win, but Hong Kong came storming back to equalise in the 92nd minute with a superb cross, headed in soundly by Siu Ki Chan.
India meet Maldives at 17:15 at the Al-Sadd Football Stadium on 3 December while Hong Kong, will now go on to meet IR Iran at 19:45, same venue, same day. (doha-2006.com)

::: Gaurav Kumar helps St Stephen's retain Kabir Trophy :::
A last-minute extra-time goal by Gaurav Kumar clinched the issue in favour of defending champions St Stephen's School of Sector 45 which eked out a narrow 1-0 triumph over hardworking but luckless St John's School of Sector 26 in final of the St Kabir Trophy Chandigarh State Football Championship for Under-12s at the St Kabir School ground here today. Gaurav Kumar booted home the all-important goal from close range after the ball had slipped out of sprawling St John's goalkeeper Shraishth Jain's hands with only few seconds left of extra time.
Both teams played brilliant football throughout the 60-minute stipulated period and ten minutes of extra time. Thrilling moves from both sides kept the parents, who turned up in large numbers on a cloudy day, spell bound and they were seen cheering their sons. The players did not disappoint their parents as they put up their best performance.
However, St John's had more chances to wrap up the issue in the regulation as well as extra time. However, Stephen's goalkeeper Rahul Chadha excelled under the cage and made brilliant saves.
St Stephen's threatened the St John's goal in the first minute when they were awarded a freekick. A 40-yarder powerful curling shot was punched by an alert Shraishth Jain at the cost of a corner kick. St John's counter-attacked in the seventh minute. St Stephen's custodian Rahul Chadha made two successive outstanding saves. St John's right talented winger Parseej Singh Oberoi took a powerful shot from 25 yards which Rahul blocked and the ball travelled to Ude Partaap Singh who unleashed a good try but Rahul was not in a mood to wilt under pressure. The Stephen's goal survived again in the 23rd minute. Following a defensive lapse by Jasbir Singh, St John's striker Ude Partaap Singh got possession of the ball and took a shot which Rahul Chadha saved at the cost of a corner kick. However, the best St John's move came in the 42nd minute. Chander Mohan passed the ball to Praseej Singh who beat advancing Stephen's goalkeeper Rahul Chadha with an angular grounder. But to the disappointment of St John's supporters, the ball went across the goalmouth and kissing the pole.
Midway through the first session of extra time, St Stephen's fullback Jasbir Singh fired a long ranger following a free kick. St John's goalkeeper Shraishth Jain rose to the occasion and collected it in a smooth action.
As the organizers were preparing for penalties with only few seconds left, St Stephen's scored the match-winner. Pankaj initiated the move and squared the ball to Bikram Prit Singh who directed the ball towards the St John's goal. The ball slipped out of the hands of sprawling Shraishth Jain's hands and opportunist Gaurav Kumar gently toed the ball into the St John's goal.
Canara Bank AGM distributed the prizes while in the morning Chandigarh DPI (Schools) Ashwani Kumar was introduced to the teams. St Kabir Principal JP Singh and Administrator Gurpreet S Bakshi were among those who welcome the chief guest.

::: Iran back in Asian Games football :::
Football's world-governing body FIFA has announced a temporary lifting of the ban imposed on Iran! This was announced by FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter earlier today.
Blatter to a press gathering at Soccerex 2006: "Iran have been given special permission by FIFA after an undertaking by the Iran Physical Education Organisation who sent a correspondence by which they committed themselves and IRIFF to fulfil within one month all requirements set forth by the FIFA Emergency Committee."
The exemption applied only to the Iran U-23 team and exclusively for the Asian Games.
Following today's developments the Doha Asian Games Organising Committee (DAGOC) has decided to follow the original draw which had placed Iran in Group D along side India, Hong Kong and Maldives.

::: Dereyk DeSouza - An Obituary :::
by Sujay Sharma / IndianFootball.Com Mumbai:
Dereyk DeSouza loved football. He epitomized football in Mumbai. Be it the Cooperage, the St.Xavier's football ground in Parel, the back-garden in Colaba, the Oval ground, or the playgrounds of various schools in Mumbai, he loved football at everyone of these Mumbai hotbeds, and more. Here was a man who had devoted his entire life to the beautiful game, and from whom the game had been uplifted so much.
He played with international stars like PK Banerjee, he honed national stars like Godfrey Pereira, he coached club teams like Mahindras and Salgaocars, but he continued to display the same verve, discipline, intent, dedication, even while working with some 8 year old kid at the Oval on a Saturday evening, or voluntarily supervising the training session of schoolkids wanting to learn some basic football in the summer vacations on the Cooperage dust-bed.
He would spend his whole day at the Cooperage, for that was his spiritual home, the place where he truly felt home. Be it blazing summer, or pouring monsoon, along with the few constants at the age-old and dilapidated Mumbai football mecca of the Cooperage, was the presence of Dereyk de Souza somewhere on the premises, either managing the affairs of the Mumbai District FA, helping complete the pre and post match formalities of the local league matches, overseeing the maintenance of the play-field, attending to phone calls >from inquisitive journalists and pleading officials, passing limericks to hangers on (who would just be hanging on in the heat or the rain to hear his limericks and nothing else, when no football was being played), teasing and encouraging the several players, some of whom had been coached by him, many who had not, and all who were gripped by his charisma and wit. He could still, at this age, proudly give the ball a mighty kick, whenever it rolled near him, out of play, and would be promptly returned by him to exactly where is came from, always by a kick, following which he took his seat, chuckling at his own feat.
He was referred to just as 'Coach' at the Cooperage, for he was the coach of all the coaches there in his midst. He was the senior-most of his generation, and the one of a few amongst them still living his daily life serving football, being served from football. He coached very successfully, a competitive team in the Mumbai tournaments, till as recently as December 2005. He served as Technical Director of the nationally hailed Maharashtra team, up until this October's Santosh Trophy tournament.
He had lost his dearly loved brother, one of India's best ever strikers, one with whom he dazed the fans at the Cooperage, Neville D'Souza, many years early. He had lost his wife too, after her long fight with cancer. But he never let any of these set-backs affect his love for football. Rather, he probably used football as a healing effect to its full, by devoting so dedicatedly himself to the game in Mumbai. Towards the end, he seemed so fortunate and happy to have been able to play with, smile with, his grand-son Nathan, just about to turn one year old. Nathan looks a lot like Dereyk, and the love a grand-father feels for his grandchild, his first, would have been one of Dereyk's most cherished memories. Unsurprisingly, he had even excused himself from participating in the Mahindra youth programme for a week, so he could spend more time with his grandson on his short visit to Mumbai.
One can't imagine the Cooperage without Dereyk DeSouza. It will be a whole different experience for people visiting it now. The tribute paid to him by the all the footballing fraternity when his body was laid to rest for paying last respects at the Cooperage, said so much, and more, to the impact he had made on everyone present during his lifetime. The symbolism of his casket being carried around the Cooperage field, before heading off to the nearby church for service, was fitting. He would have definitely liked it a lot.
And the gods of the beautiful game, the followers of the beautiful game, would no doubt regard him a saint of the beautiful game.

The recent shift of power in Indian football was evident today as "The Last" of the Calcuttans bowed out of the 119th Osian's Durand Cup 2006 in New Delhi. For the second year running, the powerhouses of Calcutta will be conspicuous by their absence in the final of the Durand Cup. With both Mohammedan Sporting and East Bengal bowing out with dismal campaigns early in the tournament, the hopes of Calcutta rested on the mighty Mohun Bagan team. However, in the first semi-final of the Durand Cup, Mohun Bagan was totally outplayed by Dempo.
Dempo looked totally in control throughout the match and scored twice without conceding to book a place in the finals. Roberto Mendes Silva, better known as Beto, put the Goan side ahead in the 22nd minute after a mistake by Mohun Bagan custodian Sangram Mukherjee. In the 74th minute, Anthony Pereira put the result beyond doubt as he slotted home Dempo's second from a deflected free-kick. Mohun Bagan may feel a little hard done by some erroneous decisions from the officials, especially a penalty claim which was declined by the referee. However, the deserving team certainly won as Mohun Bagan hardly looked like scoring, especially in the second half. With the IFA Shield less than two weeks away, it remains to be seen how the teams from Calcutta bounce back from their appalling Durand Cup campaigns.

Friendly - Sharjah: Al Shaab Club 1-1 INDIA U23 - Goals: 1-0 Abdullah Essa (4'), 1-1 Sunil Chetri (89').
Match Report (by Jerry Joy / IndianFootball.Com):
Sunil Chetri scored in the 89th minute to earn India a hard fought draw against a strong Al Shaab, Sharjah side.
India once again decided to leave their talismanic captain Baichung Bhutia out of the line-up as a result of which Sandip Nandy captained the side. India once again employed a 4-4-2 formation and started off with Irungbam Surkumar Singh, Nanjangud Shivananju Manju, Habibur Rehman Mondal and Debabrata Roy in defence, Steven Dias, Naduparambil Pappachan Pradeep, Climax Lawrence and Bungo Thokchom Singh in midfield and Sushil Kumar Singh and Manjit Singh leading the lines. The Indians maintained a high line of defence throughout the entire match which made them susceptible to getting caught out on the through balls. The very first attack from the Al Shaab side in the 4th minute saw the Iranian player Jawad beating Irungbam Surkumar Singh on the right wing by sheer pace and delivering an inch perfect cross which was just out of the reach of Debabrata Roy on the opposite wing. The cross was met by a first time shot by Abdullah Essa who came charging in and Sandip Nandy did a good job to get down to the shot. But the rebound was knocked in by Abdullah Essa once again to give Al Shaab Club the lead.
The initial goal didn't deter the Indians and the heartening fact to be noted was the Indians pressing the Al Shaab players deep in their territory which caused lot of headaches to Al Shaab. The Indians made all their attacks from the right wing during the first half and Steven Dias and Surkumar delivered innumerable number of inviting crosses which the Indian forwards could not make use of. On the two occasions India were able to get at the end of the crosses NP Pradeep and Manjit Singh missed the mark narrowly. Inspite of all the promising play from the Indian side they did not test the Al Shaab goalkeeper sufficiently. The Indians were able to get just three shots on target in the first half which reflects the story. In between India had a let off when a mistake from Pradeep resulted in Jawad having a free run on goal, but good pressuring by Surkumar Singh and closing down by Sandip Nandy resulted in Jawad shooting wide. Special mention should be made about Steven Dias and Sushil Kumar Singh who ran their hearts out during the first half for the Indian side.
The Indians had an injury scare in the 25th minute when Nanjangud Shivananju Manju, one of the major hopes of the Indian defence, went down and had to be replaced by Gouramangi Moirangthem Singh in defence. On enquiring with the Indian coach and Manju directly it seems it was just a precautionary substitution and he should be fit to play in the 15th Asian Games Doha 2006 opener against Hong Kong on the 29th.
The second half began with the captain Baichung Bhutia giving a pep talk to the team on the field just before kick-off. Subhashish Roy Chowdhury returned back in goal with Debabrata Roy moving to right wing back positon and Habibur Rehman Mondal moving to the left wing back position, while Anupam Sarkar and Gouramangi Singh patrolling the defence. In the midfield Climax Lawrence and Chitrasen Chandam Singh played in the middle while Syed Rahim Nabi played on the left wing and Subhas Chakraborty played on the right. Tarif Ahmed and Sunil Chetri led the lines. The second half was a repeat of the first half with Al Shaab having a majority of possession and the Indians pressing them through out and not giving any opportunities for Al Shaab players to have a shot on goal. Indian attacks in this half came entirely through the left side which involved Nabi and Habibur Rehman Mondal. There were quite a number of promising moves but the final ball let the Indians down. The 60th minute saw Pradeep replacing Climax and Surkumar coming back in place of Debabrata Roy. There was a sense of urgency in the Indians play in the final 30 minutes and Tarif Ahmed and Sunil Chetri won lot of first balls but to no avail. When it seemed that the game had slipped out the Indians grasp a foul was committed on Chitrasen near the centre half and there was no danger to the Al Shaab team. But quick thinking on part of Pradeep resulted in Pradeep tacking a quick free kick and finding Sunil Chetri just outside the right hand side of the penalty box. Sushil held the defender off and and dug the ball out from under his legs and hit a first time shot with his left foot which resulted in the ball nestling in the bottom right hand corner to give the Indians a hard fought draw.
The Indians can take heart from the fact that they were able to score from one of the half chances presented to them and with Baichung Bhutia set to return to the line up and uncertainty regarding Iran the Indian team has a realistic chance to make the quarter finals of the Asian Games.
INDIA: 1-Sandip Nandy; 17-Irungbam Surkumar Singh, 3-Nanjangud Shivananju Manju, 30-Habibur Rehman Mondal, 31-Debabrata Roy; 63-Bungo Thokchom Singh, 41-Naduparambil Pappachan Pradeep, 40-Climax Lawrence, 12-Steven Dias; 9-Manjit Singh, 56-Sushil Kumar Kumar.

Mr Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, President – AIFF, discussed the various challenges facing AIFF in organizing the 11th NFL including non-availability of grounds at various locations. He mentioned that talks were being conducted with various corporate houses for professionalizing the National Football League and a joint effort from the AIFF, Clubs and Corporate bodies is needed to successfully professionalize the NFL.

::: FIFA suspends Iran from all international football :::
One of India's opponents in the 2006 Asian Games football tournament, Iran, was suspended today by world governing body FIFA because of government interference in running the game in the country.
This decision means that Iran is banned from all football action with immediate effect. One will have to see, if the Iran Football Federation is able to sort out the issue and is inducted again by FIFA or if the first casualty of the suspension is the football tournament at the Asian Games.
If Iran are out, then the two time defending champions wouldn't be able to defend their title, meaning India would get a new opponent in Group D besides their matches against Hongkong and the Maldives.

::: AFC General Secretary Velappan to retire :::
AFC release: Long-serving AFC General Secretary Dato Peter Velappan has announced that he would be stepping down at the end of this year after 30 years of meritorious service. Velappan, affectionately known as Dato, took over as the General Secretary of then fledgling AFC in 1977 and has since then played a dynamic role in transforming the way the game is played in Asia.
"The time has come to say goodbye," Velappan told the AFC Executive Committee today. "I have served Asian football for long and am happy at the way the AFC has grown."
"When I look back at my journey, it is nothing less than a dream. We started out in a small office with one secretary and look at what the AFC and Asian football have achieved today... I am overwhelmed."
The 71-year-old Velappan's vision and relentless membership drive saw the AFC grow from its humble roots to over 46 countries today, the most populous of FIFA's six confederations.
"I have experienced the best years of my life at the helm of the AFC, serving a sport which is very dear to me," said Velappan, who served as the Coordination Director of the Organising Committee for the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan.
"I will take some time off for myself now to write about the history of Asian football and memoirs of my life."
Velappan said he has no doubts about AFC's position in the near future. "Under President Mohamed Bin Hammam's leadership we are scaling the heights like never before. In five to ten years' time we will be on top of the world."
The Malaysian is also in charge of AFC's revolutionary Vision Asia programme which promises to change the way football is played and administered in the vast continent.
AFC President Mohamed Bin Hammam announced that Deputy General Secretary Dato Paul Mony Samuel would take over as the General Secretary effective January 1, 2007. Bin Hammam also informed that Dato Velappan would be associated with AFC and will continue as the Director of Vision Asia "as long as he wants" besides being the Tournament Director of the AFC Asian Cup 2007 to be co-hosted by Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam.

::: A Chat with Bob Houghton in Dubai :::
IndianFootball.Com's Jerry Joy yesterday had the chance to chat with Indian national coach Bob Houghton on numerous issues after the press conference at the Iranian Club in Dubai. Bob gives an outlook at the upcoming Asian Games and his plans for India in the coming years and what needs to be done to improve our football.
Click here to read the complete >>Bob Houghton interview

Friendly - Dubai: Iranian Club, Dubai 0-4 INDIA U23 - Goals: 1-0 Manjit Singh (10'), 2-0 Nanjangud Shivananju Manju (12'), 3-0 Thokchom Bungo Singh (??'), 4-0 Climax Lawrence (88').
India ran out easy 4-0 winners against a sub-par Iranian club in the practice match which was held tonight at the Iranian Club ground, Dubai. The victory comes as a morale booster to the Indian team after the string of successive defeats they have suffered in the recent past.
Surkumar Singh captained the Indian side in the absence of regular captain Baichung Bhutia who was not even among the substitutes but was present with the Indian team on the sidelines. Bob Houghton decided to go back on what he had thought yesterday and decided to give new arrival Climax Lawrence a run in and decided to rest Bhutia.
The Indians employed a 4-4-2 formation for the entire match. In the first half India started with Subhashish Roy Chowdhury in goal; Surkumar Singh, NS Manju, Habibur Rehman Mondal and Debabrata Roy in defence; Syed Rahim Nabi, NP Pradeep, Gouramangi Singh and Steven Dias in midfield with Manjit Singh and Sushil Kumar leading the lines.
The Indians opened the scoring in the 10th minute from a corner which was headed in by Manjit Singh. The second goal followed in the 12th minute which was headed in by NS Manju from another freekick taken by Steven Dias from the left wing following a foul just outside the penalty box. India had numerous chances to increase the lead in the first half but they missed many gilt edged opportunities with Syed Rahim Nabi and Manjit Singh being the main culprits. One chance saw Nabi missing the goal from three yards out. Also there was no fluidity to the Indian game with mispasses galore.
The Indian keeper Subhashish Roy Chowdhury was a virtual spectator throughout the half until he was called into action for a freekick awarded to the Iranian Club just outside the box a few minutes before the break. But the Iranian Club could not capitalize on the opportunity.
The second half saw a change in personnel with Subrata Pal in the goal, Anupam Sarkar replacing Habibur Mondal. The midfield and the forward line had a new look to it with Subhas Chakraborty, Climax Lawrence, Chitrasen Singh and Bungo Singh lining up in the midfield with Tariq Ahmed and Sunil Chetri leading the Indian attack. Bungo Singh opened the scoring in the second half with a great volley from just outside the left hand side of the penalty box. The shot gave no chance to the opposition goalkeeper and the ball nestled in the top most left hand corner. The Indian team in the second half showed much better control and coordination with the calming presence of Climax Lawerence being the perceptible difference. The Indian team had quite a lot of promising moves but the end product was lacking. In situations where the Indian team managed to have a shot on target they came against a formidable opponent in the form of the Iranian Club goalkeeper who made 3-4 top class saves. But with 2 minutes left Climax completed the rout with a shot into the bottom right corner which was the culmination of a few good passes.
The event was covered by Ten Sports but the turnout was quite disappointing with hardly 50 spectators.
On evidence of this match India needs to improve by leaps and bounds to compete against UAE Premier League side Al Shaab on November 24 and the forthcoming 2006 Doha Asian Games.
INDIA: 45-Subhashish Roy Chowdhury (20-Subrata Pal); 17-Irungbam Surkumar Singh, 3-Nanjangud Shivananju Manju, 30-Habibur Rehman Mondal (47-Anupam Sarkar), 31-Debabrata Roy; 10-Syed Rahim Nabi (62-Subhas Chakraborty), 41-Naduparambil Pappachan Pradeep (42-Chitrasen Chandam Singh), 61-Gouramangi Moirangthem Singh (40-Climax Lawrence), 12-Steven Dias (63-Bungo Thokchom Singh), 9-Manjit Singh (41-Tarif Ahmed), 56-Sushil Kumar Kumar (58-Sunil Chetri).

::: Bob Houghton: Make India Competitive for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers :::
Jerry Joy reporting: A press conference was held at the Iranian Club, Dubai today at 14.00 hrs (Dubai time). The Indian national team was represented by Coach Bob Houghton and Manager Syed Nasir Ali along with Tour organiser Raul Fernandes from GIP, Dubai and Iranian Club representative Mr. Mehmoodi.
Raul Fernandes started off the press conference by introducing the gentlemen on the stage.
Raul also informed that the Indian team would be playing 2 practice matches -
• November 21 (20.00 hrs): INDIA U23 vs Iranian Club; Venue: Iranian Club
• November 24 (16.45 hrs): INDIA U23 vs Al Shaab Club, Sharjah; Venue: Al Shaab Club, Sharjah
Bob Houghton took over and began by thanking Raul Fernandes of GIP, Dubai and Iranian Club on behalf of the Indian national team for providing them excellent facilities for the training camp and for their hospitality.
Bob Houghton also made the point that Iran has produced players who have proved that they can compete in the best leagues of the world and are still doing so with examples of Ali Daei, Ali Karimi, Khodadad Azizi and Mehdi Mahdavikia.
Bob Houghton informed that the Indian team for the Asian Games was basically a development team, U23 team, with only three overage players. He also made it clear that only Baichung Bhutia will be playing amongst the overage players in tomorrows practice game and they had agreed to unlimited number of substitutions with Iranian Club for the match.
When asked about the chances of Deepak Kumar Mondal joining the team, Bob Houghton made it clear that it would be Climax Lawrence who would be joining the team as the third overage player.
He also felt India currently ranked as No.29 in Asia is unacceptable and that his main target was "Making India competitive by the time of World Cup 2014 qualifiers which would begin in 2012".
When queried about the role of Priya Ranjan Das Munshi who has been in charge of the AIFF for nearly two decades and still no improvement to the national team Bob felt he has been quite supportive and he has given Bob a free reign. Also Bob felt that the president has only influenced positively.
Bob also mentioned that India had four of their centre backs missing - Sanjeev Kumar Maria, Mahesh Gawli and Narinder Singh (due to injuries) and Deepak Kumar Mondal (marriage) but it would be a great opportunity for youngsters like Habibur Rehman Mondal to gain experience.
Bob was also of the opinion that tournaments like the Durand Cup and the Santosh Trophy are nonsense as a result of which players like Mehraj din Wadoo, an important player of the Indian national team, gets injured as a result of playing three games in the seven days. He also felt that more importance was given to the local leagues citing the example of Bob having to release eight players from the two week camp which was held for his first match in charge of India against Saudi Arabia in Calcutta.
Also Bob expressed the view that 14 players out of the 22 players for the Asian Games are from two clubs which is not a healthy practice. Also he felt the biggest problems with respect to the Indian NFL were the problem of scheduling and that was the only country that would play on the weekend before international weeks designated by FIFA.

::: No NFL at Nehru Stadium, Margao? :::
Matches of the upcoming 11th National League in Goa could face once more venue problems.
Once more during an NFL, the Sports Authority of Goa has handed the Nehru Stadium, Margao, which happens to be Goa's only international level football and cricket venue, to the Goa Cricket Association. This time for a One-Day International to be played on February 14 between India and Sri Lanka. This would mean that the Nehru Stadium would be handed to the GCA in mid-December so that they can prepare the venue for Cricket.
For the AIFF and the Goa FA this means looking for options in the NFL calendar and alternative venues. The renovated and expanded Duler ground in Mapusa might be a local alternative in Goa. That stadium is set to be inaugurated by the AIFF president Das Munshi on November 24. Other options would be Calicut, Bangalore and New Delhi.
In Calcutta meanwhile the Calcutta Police has informed the local organising IFA that for some proposed matches they wouldn't be able to deploy police forces at the Saltlake Stadium. Alternative venues could be the Barasat Stadium and the Howrah Stadium.
An AIFF meeting would be held on November 25 in Goa to discuss and decide on NFL venues.

::: IFA announce "Peerless" Nursery Football League :::
On the Platinum Jubilee Year, Peerless has joined hands with the IFA (West Bengal body) to organise the "Peerless" Nursery Football League. In total 65 Teams will participate in this Tournament vying for the glorious Peerless Radhashyam Roy Football Trophy 2006. IFA secretary Subrata Dutta announced the commencement of Peerless Nursery Division Football League 2006 at a Press Conference at the IFA office today.
He also referred this tournament as the key competition for budding football talents and mentioned that it is here that they will prepare themselves to become star footballers of the future. This tournament will ensure an uninterrupted supply-line for the clubs of higher divisions participating in the Calcutta Football League.
The tournament has been divided into two groups and five zones. Group A will have 30 teams of boys under the age of 14 with starting from November 15. A total of 35 teams will be playing for Group B of boys under 12 years of age with these matches to kick off November 27. The First Phase will be played on round-robin League basis. Three teams from each zone of each group will play against each other in the second phase on Knockout basis.
Champion team of Group A will win Rs 6,000 and runners up Rs 4,000. Group B champion and runner ups will win Rs 4,000 and Rs 3,000 respectively. Semifinal losers will win Rs 2,000 each. Group A and B matches will be played at 41 grounds.
"The underlying purpose of promoting the Peerless Nursery Football League lies in the need to popularise the game at the grass-root level. It will aid in fostering the involvement of various schools in football and generate interest amongst the teenagers for the promotion of the game", said Subrata Dutta.
PP Ray, General Manager (Legal), Peerless General Finance and Investment Company mentioned, "Peerless as an institution is based on certain enduring values like RESILIENCE (Ability to spring back), INTEGRITY (Never letting anyone down), COMMITMENT (Putting stakeholders first), TOGETHERNESS (Bonding of Peerless family) and PERFORMANCE ORIENTATION (Motivation to perform consistently) that have been guiding the company ever since its inception. Interestingly enough, these values that constitute the driving force of Peerless also hold good in Football. This element of commonality prompts Peerless to be so much interested in Soccer."
"This Tournament is expected to create a revival of interest in Soccer amongst the little ones. Interest in Soccer is more significant today than ever before, because only that can drive the boys to take to proper training to groom themselves to become ace-footballers in the future," he added.
Peerless has been promoting and patronizing football over decades now. Peerless Golden Jubilee Football Tournament hosted in collaboration with Calcutta Sports Journalists' Club in early 1980's still figures as a legendary event in the history of football.
Peerless had taken the initiative in collaboration with IFA for proper training at the Sub-Junior level in 1990 and Junior level in 1995. It is worthy to mention that Peerless SC has won the 2006 Calcutta Super Division title and has qualified for the Premier Division next year
Mr Dutta said, "It is a moment of great pride and honour for me to announce the association of Peerless in Nursery Football League 2006. The tournament has been very well received at the grass root level and has worked wonders towards the development of the game in our State. Many hidden talents have been unearthed from this tournament that was hitherto untapped. Like last year this year too IFA shall appoint spotters in all the zones to scout promising footballers. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Peerless, without whose constant support this initiative would not be possible."
