Note-1: UNI report: First came the CD hailing the Left Front's achievements in West Bengal and then came the sharp denial from the soccer trio, including Baichung Bhutia, about their awareness of it being used in the poll campaign for the Assembly elections in April.
Stunned by the realisation that the CD was being used for the poll campaign, former Olympians PK Banerjee and Chuni Goswami and Indian captain Baichung Bhutia made it clear that they were unaware that they were campaigning for the government when asked to comment on certain issues regarding the development of the state.
Baichung Bhuitia, who is also East Bengal skipper, said, "My focus is on the National Football League. I just want to win it for East Bengal. I have nothing to do with any party. If I ever campaign for anyone, it will be on the basis of personal relations and have nothing to do with politics," he said.
"When they took my shots, they told me that it would be used to showcase development in the villages. No one told me it would be used for political purposes," he said.
PK Banerjee said, "Never have I been publicly aligned with any political party. Why should I need political colour at this age? By God's grace I am acceptable to everyone. No one has asked me to seek votes for any party." Chuni Goswami said he did rate the government's performance, but it was only Thursday that he found out that it would be used to woo the voters.
"I rated the government six out of ten. But I did not know that it would be a part of a political campaign," he said.
Earlier, there were rumours that former Team India Cricket skipper Sourav Ganguly would bat for the Left Front. But he called the press and made it clear that neither was he campaigning for the Left in the forthcoming Assembly polls nor was he approached by the front formally.
In this case also the goals scored on Wednesday after the CD was made public with comments of these three footballers along with intellectuals and other celebrities from the state praising the achievements of this government in the state, was called off-side by the players themselves.
The sports fraternity have maintained a distance from all political parties in the state and the three soccer players maintained the tradition of sporting neutrality.

East Bengal Club won 5-3 in a thriller against Dempo SC in a 10th National League match at the floodlit Saltlake Stadium, Calcutta. East Bengal remained in second spot with now 18 points from nine matches, while defending champions Dempo SC remain on 10 points from as many matches.
It was the second successive high scoring match involving East Bengal Club and a Goan rival. In the earlier Round match East Bengal had beaten Sporting Clube de Goa 4-3. Scoring nine goals in two matches is a great achievement for any team, but conceeding six goals is nearly as bad.
East Bengal started the match in typical attacking style. It was Cameroonian midfielder Ndem A Guy Kiyeck Herve to give the red-and-gold the lead in the 13.minute and captain Baichung Bhutia doubled the lead on 24 minutes with an oppurtunistic strike. Dempo keeper Satish Kumar wanted to pass the ball to Raju Singh, but Baichung realised the chance and intercepted the ball to score. But Dempo were also in the match and reduced the deficit in the 34.minute through Nigerian defender Majekodumni Bolaji. It stayed 2-1 at the breather.
After the breather former TFA cadet Debabrata Roy came on to score two great goals for East Bengal. His first goal in the 69.minute brought his side the two goal cushion back. Then India striker Syed Rahim Nabi gave East Bengal in the 71.minute their fourth goal of the match. In the 75.minute Anupam Sarkar brings down Clifford Miranda in the penalty area for Nigerian Ranty Martins Soleye to reduce the margin. In the very next East Bengal move Debabrata scored again with a fierce shot from the left, from where the ball went in past stand-in keeper Abhijit Mondal. Dempo lost the match but they scored the final goal of the match five minutes from time when Ranty headed in a Dhanraj Ravanan cross.

10th National League - Calcutta: Mohammedan Sporting Club 1-0 Air-India - Goal: 1-0 Okonji Onyelo Patrick (17').
Mohammedan Sporting Club returned to winning ways with a lone goal victory against fellow promotee Air-India in a 10th National League match at the floodlit Saltlake Stadium, Calcutta. Mohammedan Sporting moved into fourth place with 14 points from 10 matches; while Air-India stayed just outside the relegation zone with 10 points from nine matches.
Sporting coach Mohammed Habib made a change to his attack formation from the teams defeat away to league leaders Mahindra United by fielding Gley Yao Rodrigue from Togo in a more withdrawn position playing Bijen Singh along with Nigerian Okonji Onyelo Patrick upfront. But the coach's idea to give the Sporting attack more trust and to create more chances didn't happen as Rodrigue seems to be a pale shadow of the player he was at the beginning of the season for city rivals Mohun Bagan. Still Sporting took the lead in the 17.minute when Air-India defender Suley Musah committed a deadly blunder by heading a Bijen Singh cross into the path of Sporting striker Patrick, who made no mistake to score the match winner. But the story of the match could have been different had Air-India scored of their chances. The Airmen from Mumbai had more of the match but their striker were either not able to score or Sporting keeper Gopal Das was in the way. Sporting's "Man of the Match" Mohammed Mukhtar did some good runs down the wings but there wasn't anyone to score of those crosses or passes. It just wasn't to be though Sporting ended their four match winless streak.

10th National League - Calcutta: Mohun Bagan AC 3-0 Salgaocar SC - Goals: 1-0 Sushil Kumar Singh (39'), 2-0 Awudu Ibrahim (78'), 3-0 Eduardo Chacon Coelho Lacerda (85').
This match report almost got nipped in the bud as an overzealous police official prevented the journalists holding legitimate passes from entering the ground. After repeated explanations by senior journalists, the matter was finally resolved albeit leaving both parties a bit irritated.
Former champions Mohun Bagan AC continued their impressive run in the second-leg of the 10th National League under new coach and goalkeper Subrata Paul maintained yet another clean sheet as the Calcutta giants crushed another former champions Salgaocar SC 3-0 at the Saltlake Stadium on Thursday night. The match however proved to be another black one in the history of the stadium as the lights went off in the ninth minute of the game thereby causing the match to be paused for at least 20 minutes. It was for the third such incidence in the last 18 months. The stadium officials however blamed the state electricity board for the incident.
Bagan seemed to lack the spirits of their last two games in the beginning, looking a bit disorganised. However the reappearance of the lights seemed to rejuvenate them as they took full control of the game. But something was lacking in their attacks and they failed to create any positive opening for the first quarter of the match. Coffe created a chance in the 21st minute all by himself but his shot ended in side-netting. Mohun Bagan got the breakthrough in the 39th minute when Sushil Kumar Singh netted in a cool finish from middle of the 18 yard box after a brilliant one-touch display from Coffe, Ibrahim and Dharamjit, the latter giving the final flick. The only chance for Salgaocar came in the 43rd minute when a Fabio shot went just wide of the post.
Bagan seemed to lose control of the game for the first few minutes of the second half but they continued to create chances through Ibrahim, Chinmoy Sarkar and Noel Wilson. Meanwhile, the match was held up again in the 66th minute as some policemen threw in an extra ball onto the field after the ball had gone out for a throw. Noel continued to create chances but none of his shots hit the target. In the 77th minute, Subrata Paul who had been standing as a spectator for a long time, fumbled while collecting a Rocus Lamare cross but fortunately for Bagan, he collected the ball in the second attempt. A minute later, Bagan went 2-0 up when Sushil Singh received the ball in the midfield from a counter-attack and passed it to Ibrahim who ran through the left flank, beat Roberto Fernandes and fired home into the far corner of the net from the edge of the box. Noel continued trying his luck and sent several more shots into the stands. In the 85th minute, from a Coffe corner, Eduardo Chacon Coelho Lacerda (Du) scored with a superb header which left the Salgaocar custodian helpless. In the dying minutes, Coffe tried to complete the rout with a fourth goal but his shot missed the target. Bagan are now third in the league table with 14 points from 10 matches. They look a totally different team from the one that got off to one of the worst starts in the team’s history after they had got only 5 points from the first seven matches.

Note-1: Syed Nayeemuddin and his team of coaches plus manager PK Banerjee have now been officially sacked by the AIFF. This comes on the resolutions adopted by the Executive Committee on March 8 and endorsed by the Technical Committee a few days later. The Technical Management of the Indian Senior National Team and Asian Games U23 bound squad would now be reorganised with the search for a suitable foreign coach on. As reported earlier the AIFF has asked for help from FIFA to recommend a suitable new coach for Team INDIA.
Meanwhile over 30 applications from coaches from around the world have been received by the AIFF for the vacant post of Head Coach.
There are some prominent names amongst them, which the AIFF has released. Some have coached national teams and have experience in coaching top level clubs around the world.
Note-2: The Appeals Committee of the AIFF has decided in favour of Air-India on their protest dated February 24, 2006. This means that Air-India get all three points for the 10th National League match against Fransa-Pax FC on February 3, 2006 for which Fransa-Pax had not turned-up.
In the end the AIFF took the only possible decision, but this happened only after Air-India filed an own protest on February 24 against the AIFF's earlier decision to reschedule the match after Fransa-Pax failed to turn up for the originally scheduled February 3 game, protesting 'poor' refereeing in their earlier match against Mahindra United on January 30. The AIFF then rescheduled the match for March 2, but this time Air-India protested, calling the decision unfair and informing the AIFF that it would not be possible to field a team as most of its players were on leave. After taking it's time and deliberating on the issue, the AIFF today announced the three points are awarded to Air-India.
Fransa-Pax meanwhile had earlier said they would pull out of the NFL, if they do not get to play the match against Air-India. What they will do is unknown at the moment.
AIFF secretary Alberto Colaco said on the decision, "The consequences for failure to appear for a scheduled match are serious. But, in the present case, Air India is not at fault."

AFC Cup 2006 - Group A: Brothers Union, BANGLADESH 2-2 Mahindra United - Goals: 1-0 Abul Hossain Mohamed (52'), 1-1 Yakubu Yusif (59'), 2-1 Mohamed Hassan Ameli (63'), 2-2 Jose Ramirez Barreto (72').
AFC match report: DHAKA: Mahindra United of India had to come from behind twice to hold a rampaging Brothers Union of Bangladesh 2-2 in a thrilling Group A match of the AFC Cup here at the Bangabandhu Stadium on Tuesday.
This was Mahindra's second consecutive draw in the tournament after last week's 2-2 stalemate against Al Ahed of Lebanon while for the Wajed Gazi-coached Brothers, who had lost the opener to Al Muharraq of Bahrain 0-2, it was a definite improvement on their earlier woeful form.
The first half ended goalless and Abul Hossain Mohamed gave the Bangladeshi league champions the lead on 52 minutes. Mahindra's Ghanaian forward Yakubu Yusif leveled the proceedings seven minutes later but the Derrick Pereira-led team failed to prevent Mohamed Hassan Ameli from restoring Brothers' one-goal advantage just four minutes later. However, Brazilian striker Jose Ramirez Barreto struck in the 72nd minute to ensure that the Indian Federation Cup winners walked away with a well-deserved point.
Brothers have a tough home match against Al Ahed on April 18 while Mahindra United will be away to Al Muharraq on April 11.
The standings were finalised only late at night after Al Muharraq beat Al Ahed 2-0 in Beirut for outright group leadership on six points. Mahindra are four adrift of the leaders, followed by a tie between the two remaining teams on one point each and goals record.
MAHINDRA UTD: 24-Sandip Nandy, 27-I Surkumar Singh, 4-Deepak Kumar Mondal, 5-Samson Fernandes, 29-Rauf Kher Khan, 7-Sushanth Mathew, 19-David Adjei, 16-James Singh, 23-Steven Dias, 8-Jose Ramirez Barreto, 10-Yakubu Yusif.
AFC Cup 2006 - Group B: MERW, TURKMENISTAN 2-2 Dempo SC - Goals: 0-1 Ranty Martins Soleye (13'), 1-1,2-2 Oleg Yuzbashyan (80',pen;90'), 1-2 Mahtumkuli Begendjev (87' - own Goal).
AFC match report: ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan: A late own goal saw MERV of Turkmenistan fritter a one-goal advantage and end their opening Group B encounter of the AFC Cup against Dempo Sports Club of India 2-2 on Tuesday here at the Olympic Stadium.
The draw left Al Nasr leading the group with three points from two matches, while MERV are second with one point from one match. Dempo bring up the rear with one point from two matches.
MERV fell behind on home turf in the 13th minute when Nigerian forward Ranty Martins, who also scored in Dempo's opening round defeat to Al Nasr, found the net after a neat exchange. Despite the early goal, the defending league champions from India failed to push home the advantage and came close to conceding the equalizer at least twice in the first period.
MERV, who are the Turkmenistan Cup champions, poured forward for the elusive goal upon resumption and hammered away at the Indian defence. One such raid saw Clifford Miranda bringing down Yevginy Tkachenko as he was getting ready to take aim at the goal and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Oleg Yuzbashyan stepped up and sent Dempo goalkeeper Abhijit Mondal the wrong way to restore parity 10 minutes from time. But Mahtumkuli Begendjev undid all the hardwork with an own goal in the 87th minute and it looked like Armando Colaco's men would earn their first full points. But Yuzbashyan had other plans and salvaged a draw with a superlative strike, which also brought up his brace, in the final minute.
MERV now travel to Oman to play Al Nasr in the next group outing on April 11.

Six players in the team hail from Chandigarh. Announcing the team in Chandigarh today after the evening session of the camp, which began on February 12 at the Sector 17 Football Stadium, Chandigarh FA president Principal Ravinder Talwar said that Bengal striker Abhishek Das would be the vice-captain of the team.
Talwar said that the AIFF spotters Mariano Dias (Goa), Syed Shabir Pasha (Tamil Nadu) and Satheevan Balan (Kerala) had selected 40 probables for the National coaching camp after the conclusion of the National Under-14 Football Festival conducted in Chandigarh from December 20 last year.

Ten players took part in the AFC Under-13 Football Festival held in Uzbekistan last year.
Chief coach Balan was confident that the Indian team would give outstanding performance in Iran. 10 boys, who went to Uzbekistan for the Under-13 Festival, had graduated to the Under-14 squad. With experienced and newcomers, India have a balanced team and Balan, who worked hard with the trainees along with Carlos, is expecting good results in the festival which is basically not a competition. 10th National League - Calcutta: Mohun Bagan AC 2-0 Fransa-Pax FC - Goals: 1-0 Sushil Kumar Singh (24'), 2-0 Coffe Edem Agbessi (30').
The barren season is over. The football gods have smiled at last and blessed the Mohun Bagan team with a couple of goals in the 10th National League, 2005/06 tie against Fransa-Pax FC at the Saltlake Stadium today. The jeers gave way to cheers as the newly appointed coach, Biswajit Bhattacharya, pulled off a miraculous transformation of the team after their disappointing performances in the league so far. The much maligned Coffe Agbessi symbolised the change in the attitude of the team with a stellar performance that eventually won him the Man-of-the-Match award. The knowledgeable crowd was quick to observe the change and gave him a thunderous round of applause when he stepped onto the podium to collect the award. The outcome of the match also proved the importance of a good coach in football as the previous coach, Jahar Das, could only manage several lacklustre performances with the same set of players a few weeks back.
The change in approach was evident at the very start as the Mohun Bagan line-up looked very menacing with three strikers in the starting eleven. However, that assumption was slightly incorrect as Coffe played wide on the left of midfield but cut in often to support the other two strikers. The strike force gave a torrid time to the Fransa defence as the players were seen chasing the ball all over the park. The first five minutes saw three attempts at the Fransa goal without success for the Mohun Bagan strikers but they were only warning signs of imminent danger. Ryan D'Souza missed the target in the 11th minute as his shot sailed over the crossbar. Coffe, playing in his new position, looked threatening as his shot went straight into the clutches of the goalkeper in the 14th minute. He then sent in a cross from the left but Sushil Singh's header didn't trouble the goalkeeper. In the 18th minute, Sushil Singh squandered a golden opportunity of scoring the opening goal as a Fransa defender dispossessed him of the ball a few feet away from the goalline. The first goal came in the 24th minute of the match as Noel Wilson gave a brilliant pass to Sushil Singh who dodged past Peter Carvalho, entered the penalty box from the right and sent a cracking shot in between Saikhom Singh and Cresson Antao to leave the Fransa custodian helpless. The wave of change could be felt in the atmosphere as the Bagan supporters urged their team on to score again. In the 28th minute, Sushil Singh couldn't reach another good cross by Coffe as Virender Singh got to the ball before him. The second goal came in the 30th minute from a flash of brilliant teamwork. Subhashish played the ball to Coffe who passed it to Ibrahim who in turn passed it on to Sushil Singh. Sushil passed the ball to the advancing Coffe who calmly slotted it into the back of the net to put the result of the match beyond doubt. In fact, Fransa never looked like scoring. Their striker, Ivan da Silva, cut a forlorn figure up the field as he was isolated most of the time because the supporting players were busy defending in their own half. Mohun Bagan squandered two more chances just before the break but it always looked as if they would be back in the second half to score some more goals.
The second half was a bit different as Fransa tried their best to put up a semblance of a fight but they were outplayed, outwitted and outclassed on the field by a rejuvenated Mohun Bagan team. In the 49th minute, Coffe chipped in a great ball for Ibrahim who missed the chance to score the third goal as his shot went on the wrong side of the post. In the 57th minute, Sushil Singh tried to score again instead of passing to a teammate in a better position and his rather selfish approach resulted in the Fransa goalkeeper making a comfortable save. In the very next minute, Coffe cut in from the left flank but his shot was just saved by a diving Virender Singh. In the 74th minute, Ibrahim found himself with only the goalkeeper to beat but it was a poor effort and he failed to hit the target. He then missed another chance in the 87th minute. Fortunately, the three points were in the bag by then and for once, Mohun Bagan were not left to lament the chances they had missed. However, as pointed out by their coach himself, such mistakes in future matches may prove very costly. The new coach may have started off with a good win but he knows that one loss might plunge his team into darkness again. Anyway, there is still a long way to go in this tournament and their problems are far from over.

Note-1: In a somewhat surprise move former India striker Biswajit Bhattacharjee has been appointed as new Mohun Bagan coach today. Bhattacharya, who had coached Mohammedan Sporting earlier in the season, is replacing Jahar Das. Das has been criticised for his way of training and his defensive strategies. Das could not win over the confidence of the players and Bagan have been forced to take this step a few days before the 10th National League restarts. Bhattacharjee meanwhile has been given a contract until the end of the ongoing NFL.
Meanwhile Mohun Bagan AC have also protested to the AIFF about their Round 8 match on March 16 against Fransa-Pax FC being shifted from Goa to Calcutta. Bagan want the match to be held in Calcutta as an away for them, so they get to play Fransa-Pax FC twice at home.
