Note-1: The Punjab State Super League match between JCT Mills and Punjab Police originally played on August 28, which had to be abandoned due to heavy rain and accumulation of water in the JCT Football Stadium, has now unanimously been decided to be held on September 5 at JCT Football Stadium, Phagwara. This was decided after a meeting between the PFA secretary Inder Singh, the league's project director and the coaches of both the teams.

Note-2: by Armstrong Vaz: Do the country's top footballers deserve these. Are we going forward or back ward. Toilets or no toilets, changing rooms or no changing rooms it a no problem situation for Goa FA. Toilets and dressing rooms are one of the pre requisites for any venue at any sporting activity when the country's top players and top clubs are playing. All that seems to have gone to the winds, if the draw released by GFA is to be taken into account. The Goa Police Cup semifinal encounter is slated at Cuncolim Government School Play ground maintained by Directorate of Sports and at poriat grounds Calangute. At both the venues there are no changing rooms nor toilets. At Calangute grounds the players and officials which includes referees are allowed to use to toilets and room of a nearby hotel which is 20 metres from the ground.
Goa United Football Academy executive committee member and panch of Calangute Fabian D'Souza disclosed that the toilets and dressing rooms construction will start in the next 15 days. He confirmed that at present toilets and rooms of the hotel are used by the players and officials.
There are no toilets nor changing rooms at the Cuncolim ground and the nearest point is a good five minutes walk from the venue and only if the nearby residents allow you to use their home for changing and using their toilets. Other wise the players and offices have to ease themselves in the open. At the ground inauguration function young India under-16 players and Cuncolim union players were seen easing themselves right in front of the large turn out before the kick off and during the half time break, creating an amusing sight for the spectators.
In the recent third division league matches GFA in spite of knowing the ground realities posted a woman referee Uvena Fernandes for two matches at the venue. The young lass who incidentally is a law student of Kare College of Law was target of cat calls during the half time break when the players of both the teams eased themselves in the open from a section of the spectators
Meanhwile one concerned resident in a letter addressed to Goa Police and Goa Aids control society has highlighted the ground realities at Cuncolim ground and specified the reasons for objection to holding such a prestigious events with the top players of the country playing on ground which is ill quipped for top player of the country.
"Are the Goa Police, Goa Aids control society and GFA want to publicize any condom distribution event at half time with the back drop of the country's top players urinating in the open," the resident has questioned the authorities in the letter.
The Cuncolim ground toilets, dressing rooms and stands are to be constructed in the second phase of the project, the foundation stone which was laid on the occasion of the inauguration of the ground by chief minister Pratap Singh Rane.
It has been also being pointed out that all other venues have toilets and dressing rooms while Cuncolim and Calangute are exceptions where the semifinals will be played but with Calangute having made alternative arrangements it remains to be seen whether any make shift changing rooms or toilets will be installed at Cuncolim is a million dollar question.

Note-3: As our friends from FootballPakistan.Com informed us Pakistan striker Muhammad Essa has decided to stay with Afghan Club in Pakistan for the moment and not accept offers from Indian clubs. Essa said to have offers from East Bengal Club and JCT Mills, but both were short term contracts though Essa wanted to only sign for the whole season. The East Bengal offer was said to be Rs 100,000 per month, while JCT's was offering Rs 60,000 per month.

Note-1: A PTI report: The fate of India's soccer coach Sukhwinder Singh, is likely to be decided at the AIFF executive committee meeting in Mumbai on September 6.
"The executive committee will discuss the minutes of the meeting of the technical committee held on Wednesday," AIFF Secretary Alberto Colaco, told reporters here on Friday.
The technical committee meeting on August 24 reviewed the recent performances of the Indian team at Pakistan and Fiji and reportedly expressed dissatisfaction at the showing of the national squad under Sukhwinder.
Colaco said the AIFF's disciplinary committee would take a decision by September 20 on the John Dias issue. The meeting of the committee is likely to be held in Delhi.
Dias has been in the news after accusing East Bengal of having forged his signature in the inter-club transfer form. After practising with East Bengal for nearly a month, he quit the city and said he would play for Goa's Dempo SC. Denying Dias's allegations, East Bengal club said two days back that it would fight to the finish to 'teach a lesson' to the player.
His case has been referred to the disciplinary committee by the AIFF's players status committee.
Dias turned out for another Goan club Salgaocar last year.
Asked whether East Bengal would have to pay compensation for delay in releasing players for the Indian camp prior to the Fiji trip, Colaco said "a decision will be taken after going through the FIFA guidelines on such issues."

Certain sections of the media had speculated in the last few days that national coach Sukhwinder Singh would be sacked today and that East Bengal coach Subhas Bhowmick would come in to replace him. The committee did discuss the dismal results of the national team (actually U23 team) against Pakistan and Fiji. The committee was not at all happy with the report handed in by Sukhwinder Singh, so the national coach position would be discussed in the next executive committee meeting on September 6. Sukhi is on tricky ground and with Subhas Bhowmick's support base growing, his days as national coach could be numbered.
An issue raised in the reports of the chief coach, manager and doctor was the fitness of the players. To more often check the physical fitness of Indian internationals, every three month's a fitness test would be carried out.
Another issue raised was to have three India Under-18 national teams (White, Saffron, Green) based across the country to enable talented youngsters to get the best possible training. The idea was welcomed by all.

Note-1: East Bengal Club called a press conference at the club tent today to give their views and written proof on the "John Dias transfer saga". As of now the player has told the AIFF Players Status Committee on August 10 that he would like to play for Dempo SC and that his signature has been forged by East Bengal, after having even trained with the East Bengal squad for about a month and even playing some exhibition matches for the red-and-gold. The case is now pending with the AIFF Disciplinary Committee as the signature on the contract and the Inter-State Transfer paper did not match for the Players Status Committee.
At the press conference East Bengal secretary Kalyan Majumdar pointed out that the club would take legal action, if needed, against the player and others, if the interest of the club were hurt (damaged). As of now Dias wants to stay in Goa, after having changed his mind a number of times.
The whole controversy started with Dias taking an advance of Rs 400,000 from East Bengal and signing the contract with the club. Thereafter Dias sends a written letter to East Bengal dated June 15 that he would now sign for Dempo and not join East Bengal as he was being threathened by Dempo officials. The letter is followed-up by another letter dated June 16 stating that he is refunding the advance and he had actually signed the transfer papers for Dempo on May 30 itself plus his parents wanted him to stay in Goa. On June 29 Dias had written another letter to East Bengal stating he was now willing to join the club as soon as possible, if his advance was send to his personal account. East Bengal just did that, Dias joined training in early-July but then suddenly disappeared in early-August, days before the Players Status Committee on August 10 in New Delhi.
East Bengal feel that either the player is playing with them or AIFF officials do not want Dias to sign for them.
    More is likely to follow.

Note-1: An AFP report: Amateur footballers Sporting Bengal United will become one of the first Asian sides to play in the FA Cup this weekend, the world's oldest knockout football tournament. The London-based side face Ware in the extra preliminary round of the tournament which is celebrating its 125th year.
"Our participation in this year's competition is truly a historic moment for the Asian community in this country," said Sporting Bengal chairman Suroth Miah.
"We want to take the whole community forward by being successful and push Asian players into mainstream football.
"To win this game would be fantastic. We have been drawn home in the next round, and it would be great for the local community to host an FA Cup game at Mile End stadium."
Sporting Bengal United was established in 1996 to push forward Asian football in England, and was awarded senior status in 2003.
"Everybody is aware that some ethnic groups, such as those from an Asian background, are still under-represented in the game, but the progress being made by this club is of tremendous importance," said the Football Association's (FA) ethics manager Lucy Faulkner. "Its another step towards football becoming fully representative of our society, not to mention a fantastic new ground for the oldest cup competition in the world." The FA aren't the only ones impressed by the club.
In 2003, the team, which draws its players from the east London borough of Tower Hamlets, were crowned UK Asian football champions for the second time. The tournament was played at Celtic's famed Parkhead stadium in Glasgow and former Scotland skipper Paul McStay liked what he saw from the skillful Bengal side.

He had been ill for quite some time, kidney problems, and he died at a south Calcutta nursing home in the morning. Note-3: National League champions Dempo SC and Super Cup winners Sporting Clube de Goa will be facing each other on August 24, at the St Cruz grounds. The match is being organised by the Cabesa Sports and Cultural Club as part of the local Harvest Festival.

Note-1: A UNI report: It was a role reversal with sloganeering footballers taking to the street as political activists took over the Ambedkar Stadium.
A number of footballers today hit the streets after the stadium was turned into a makeshift jail to accommodate thousands of BJP activists who had courted arrest earlier.
"For quite some time, football has taken a backseat and politicians are calling the shots here. This is a stadium which has hosted national and international footballers in the past. We have an ongoing league and now we are being shut out because some politicians want to hold a rally here," an irate Delhi Soccer Association (DSA) Secretary N K Bhatia told UNI.
Not sparing the Congress either, Mr Bhatia said,"We are told that they would also be holding a meeting here on August 20 and that would mean no football for us again." Criticizing the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the DSA official said, "When it comes to political parties, they are not required to go through the formalities while we run from pillar to post to host a match here."
Incidentally, this comes at a time when the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) chose Delhi - along with Manipur - for the Vision India pilot project.
"We have a task force that comprises representatives of the state government, Delhi Development Authority (DDA), police and MCD to implement the pilot project and this is what they are doing," Mr Bhatia rued.
"In the 1960s and 70s, we had 12 fields in this area but they simply vanished. Those were used for bus terminus and also for installing statues of political leaders. Ambedkar Stadium is the only ground around and here too, they don't wanty us to play football."
"They have sealed the stadium from August 11-15 for what they claim 'security threat'. That means we can't hold the annual independence day exhibition match," he lamented.

Note-1: On wednesday, August 10, the AIFF and top Indian clubs would meet in New Delhi to discuss ways to avoid Country vs Club clashes in the future. And the top three Calcutta clubs - East Bengal, Mohun Bagan & Mohammedan Sporting - today met the IFA secretary Subrata Dutta, who also happens to be an AIFF vice-president, and gave him some suggestions from their side what could be done to avoid such clashes.
A list of proposals was handed over. Here the mentioned points:
    1. The AIFF should release a list of potential candidates for the under-19, under-23 and senior camps before the start of the season
    2. The AIFF should restrict itself to picking upto five players from one club for each age group/senior side.
    3. Camps: 'Star' players should join international camps a week before the match/tournament; while only three days before a goodwill tour.
    4. The AIFF should take care of players, who are injured at camps and/or on international duty.
    5. The AIFF should take full responsibility for all players called-up to a probables camp (transport, food, lodging).
    6. Due to lack of space in the national calendar, the Rovers Cup and Durand Cup should be played every alternate year.
Some points are logical and should also be agreed on by the AIFF, but the old problem of how many players a club has to release for the national team, senior or junior, is likely to start a fresh debate. It cannot be that due to such a rule, the national teams will not be able to pick the strongest players. The 2002 World Cup qualifiers should be a reminder to all that it would have been possible that India qualified for the final Asian qualifiers had the clubs not got the AIFF to agree that only three players would be picked per club.

Note-2: English-born referee Dave Roberts will officiate in the Calcutta Premier League match between East Bengal Club and Mohun Bagan AC on August 18 at the Saltlake Stadiim, the seasons first big derby. The IFA has decided to invite Dave Roberts to officiate in Calcutta considering the importance of the fixture and to add more value to the Premier League. The move to invite a foreign referee for a local league has been cleared by the AIFF and Roberts would be assisted by locals on the sidelines.
Roberts is currently refereeing in Singapore's S-League, where he is a certified Class 1 referee with the Football Association of Singapore. He has been officiating for over 10 years, mainly in England, and has been refereeing in southeast Asia for the past two seasons in the professional and local leagues such as:

  • Singapore: Professional S-League / Prime League / National Football League
  • Lion City Cup; between Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, AIK Stockholm, Australia & Brunei.
  • Singapore Women's Invitational; between Singapore, Vietnam, India, Thailand, Australia & Hong Kong.
Roberts, who has officiated in 13 S-League matches this season, is also a qualified referee from the English FA and has also officiated in the FA Premier Reserve League, the Football Conference and FA-Cup.

Finally out the IndianFootball.Com Club Ranking for July 2005. Sorry for the delay in the release.

The Managing Director of Titanium has given marching orders to coach S Gheevargheese after a lot of turmoil within the company club over the last few weeks. Meanwhile the clubs players have objected to the move and want their coach back as they say political influence is the cause of the coaches removal. Titanium had earlier held trials under coach Gheevargheese and manager Najumuddin where the club decided to sign five players - three from Viva Kerala, one each from State Bank of Travancore and Indian Navy. When a local political party requested the coach to take in some players, which the coach rejected. And that led to his dismissal now.

Note-2: An IANS report: Animated icon "Buladi" of a middleclass housewife for HIV/AIDS awareness in West Bengal is the new brand ambassador of community football games. The governing body of soccer in the state - the Indian Football Association - and the West Bengal State AIDS Prevention and Control Society, are together organising the Buladi Pada (locality) Football Tournament that will be played among teams representing different localities of the metropolis.
The tournament, aimed at spreading the message of AIDS, starts Aug 6 and will conclude in October. "The popularity of the sport in the state has inspired us to dovetail the AIDS awareness project with it," WBSACS chief Suresh Kumar told reporters here Thursday. Trained counsellors appointed by the government body will interact with spectators and participants before each match. "By doing this, we hope to involve a greater part of the society," said Kumar.
The tournament, to be held in two stages, is named after animated character Buladi, who personifies the ongoing campaign in the state against AIDS. The state has 8,400 known cases of AIDS, 35 percent of which is in the city. "These figures, we feel, indicate the tip of the iceberg. There are many more undisclosed cases and that is why we want to make people aware of the disease," said Kumar.
The IFA will be lending its technical support by designing the fixtures and appointing officials to conduct the matches, said its secretary Subrata Dutta.

Note-1: The MDFA Executive Committee meeting held today came upon the decision to not punish Bengal Mumbai FC for their no-show at yesterday's Elite Division match, and other supposed breaches of MDFA guidelines. Speaking to IndianFootball.com, MDFA Tresurer Souter Vaz revealed the decisions arrived upon by the Committee, and some of the thinking and happenings behind them. Mr. Vaz informed, "Before the Executive Committee met, the MDFA President, Cdr. Singh, and other senior members had a one-on-one with BMFC's Krishnendu Sen, so as to clarify and appreciate each party's point of view. Mr. Sen made clear his sincere concern and thinking between behind his actions. This included him stressing that he had been awaiting the MDFA's decisions before finalising his team and such. In response, the Committee decided to take this into account, and thus not to mete out any specific punishment. However, documents pertaining to the BMFC players' wage disputes with the BMFC management were exchanged between the latter and the MDFA. Mr. Sen agreed to settle the player dues' issue, and ensure such don't recur. Also, the Committee decided to grant Mr. Sen and BMFC eight days to assemble the squad, so as to allow the new BMFC recruits from places like Punjab and Kerala to arrive and train. Hopefully BMFC will be able to participate in the Independence Day Cup in Mumbai on August 14 and 15. Importantly, yesterday's abandoned BMFC - Western Railway match will be rescheduled rather than the points being awarded to Western Railway," concluded Mr. Vaz.
So in the end, it was probably "nothing ado about much" by the MDFA as regards this latest controversy in Mumbai football. Probably rightly so.

Note-2: Syed Rahim Nabi made a hero's return to the Calcutta Maidan to save champions East Bengal Club from the blushes by scoring two goals today against Tollygunge Agragami after having travelled around 30 hours on train from Bangalore. Nabi had to leave the INDIA camp for the Fiji Tour due to passport problems. It wasn't the first time that Nabi had a passport problem. Mahindra United striker Surojit Bose has been called-up as a replacement by chief coach Sukhvinder Singh.

Cdr. Singh also displayed various documents exchanged between the MDFA and the BMFC Management, to validate his point of view. After that Cdr. Singh went on to express his frustration with the BMFC Management's attitude this season to the H2K MDFA Elite Division, adding that today was the second time BMFC had failed to turn up for their scheduled match. Also, BMFC had pulled out of the season-opening Nadkarni Cup tournament at the last moment. Cdr.Singh concluded by saying that the MDFA Executive Committee would meet tomorrow, to decide on the course of action to be taken on BMFC.
