Note-1: That Stephen Constantine's days as chief coach of the Indian national team are numbered is clear to everyone, but still the development of football in India is close to the heart of Constantine, even if people are made to believe it or not. And Stephen has some ideas on the future of the Santosh Trophy currently underway in Delhi. Many eyebrows have been raised over the last few days in the way Goa and Bengal got eliminated from the championship. Especially the Goan 5-1 trashing at the hands of the young Punjabis has raised questions, if senior players, for whom the Durand Cup, Federation Cup and most importantly the National League are coming-up are taking the tournament seriously. Stephen has come-up with the idea to make the Santosh Trophy an under-23 tournament with three overage players like in the Olympics and the Asian Games. This way youngsters would get a chance to show themselves on the national level, while senior players get a chance to rest. Fatigue and injuries are a major concern for the national coach and top teams.
Note-2: A PTI report: Calling for better treatment of football players, national coach Stephen Constantine on Tuesday said soccer stars should play only in limited number of domestic matches to prevent break downs before crucial international fixtures.
"How can we condemn the players for not performing against Japan (in World Cup qualifiers). They are forced to play on and on while getting only third class facilities," Constantine told reporters on the sidelines of the Santosh Trophy football championship.
"The national probable are staying in a low budget hotel while I am lodged in a different hotel," said Constantine, who was here for the national team's camp ahead of the World Cup qualifier in Oman on November 17.
The Anglo-Cypriot said that too much was being read into India's defeats in the World Cup qualifiers against Japan and Oman.
"We talk endlessly about India's defeats over five-goal margin quickly forgetting the good results," said Constantine, whose contract is under the AIFF scanner.
"How can we expect to compete with sides like Japan when their top players get 'A' grade facilities and play few number of games," he said.
25. October
The AIFF today released a list of 24 probables for the camp for the 2006 World Cup qualifier against Oman on November 17 and the preparatory match against Kuwait on November 5 in Kuwait City. The camp kicks-off tomorrow in the capital New Delhi, where the Santosh Trophy is currently being held.
But once again there seem to be numerous problems which an India probables camp is set to face. First of all some clubs, especially East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, are reluctant to release players ahead of the Durand Cup and the fast approaching Federation Cup and National League campaigns. It has gone to the extend that East Bengal have asked India captain Baichung Bhutia to report in Calcutta at the club tomorrow. Before leaving the capital Baichung is set to talk to national coach Stephen Constantine about the issue.
Further some players called to the camp are injured, so it could happen that some further players are called to the camp.
Criticism has also come on the national selectors, who are in Delhi to watch action in the Santosh Trophy, but who have not selected any new young player from the successful sides - Manipur, Punjab, Services and Kerala.

The two Kerala and India superstars shared their footballing career together, while moving and playing together for different clubs in the past. JCT Mills was the last club to witness the duo together in action, as Ancheri decided to move to Mohun Bagan. Vijayan has decided against the move, choosing to stay with JCT for another NFL season. Vijayan: "I was tempted at first. Mohun Bagan made me a good offer, but I decided to stay with JCT. Maybe, I've gotten too old for the pressures of Kolkata football. I find playing with JCT and staying at Punjab much less of a hassle. I guess, that's what made me change my mind at the last minute." When asked, what Ancheri thought of the break-up, he said it would be hard to imagine playing without Vijayan on the same side. "It's difficult to explain, but one has to move on," he said from his hometown.

Note-1: East Bengal coach Subhas Bhowmick and his Mohun Bagan colleague Subroto Bhattacharya have decided to boycott cricket covering media. Both are also asking cricket journalists to leave any press conference that they are conducting. In the last few days Bhowmick and Bhattacharya have repeatedly refused to start media conferences in the presence of reporters and cameramen from Zee Alpha, ESPN-Star Sports and a few other channels. "I am against this blatant show of favouritism towards cricket. Forget about the game of cricket itself. These days the electronic channels devote half their time to cover BCCI elections. Do they spend even one fourth of the time on the elections of the All India Football Federation (AIFF)," asked Bhowmick. Bhattacharya added: "We have decided to boycott channels like Zee and Sahara, because they spend huge amount on cricket and not even peanuts for Indian soccer. If they do not have the time and money for us, why should we allow them to sell our popularity in West Bengal." Initially, the two coaches asked the footballers to refrain from speaking to channels like Zee, Sahara and ESPN-Star Sports. However on Monday, they decided to withdraw the embargo on ESPN-Star Sports as the channel will telecast live the semifinals and final of IFA Shield. Bhowmick said: "At least in the past, ESPN has sponsored football in Kolkata. So we decided to keep them out of our embargo."
