Note-1: In a sudden and dramatic move, Subhas Bhowmick on Saturday quit as East Bengal coach. He handed over his resignation letter to club officials who had gone to the Netaji Subhas International airport to receive the team which flew back from Syria where they lost the AFC Cup quarter final. According to a club official late on Saturday night, Subhas Bhowmick has confirmed that he will join practice on Sunday. Bhowmick explained his decision was guided by the team’s failure in the AFC Cup. "I am taking full responsibility of the debacle and stepping down so that someone else can do a better job." The coach added: "The AFC Cup was my dream, I had wanted to do something, but now… I can’t take this defeat." He said he is presently not in the right frame of mind and has no idea about his next step. Club officials, though, refused to accept Bhowmick’s resignation. "We are not accepting Bhowmick’s resignation. He will remain East Bengal coach. We have full confidence in him,” said club secretary Kalyan Majumdar. "We have a match coming up on Monday. We have nobody in mind to replace him," said another official.

Note-2: A PTI report: The All India Football Federation has issued a show cause notice to East Bengal for their delay in releasing players for the national camp held here before the LG Cup in Vietnam last month. In a faxed message to the club yesterday, AIFF secretary Alberto Colaco asked the club management to give its reply as to why it had delayed releasing players for the national camp defying repeated instructions from the apex soccer body. He also asked the club to send its reply by October 10, failing which the matter would be referred to the disciplinary committee of AIFF for a possible punishment. Besides, the club was asked to pay AIFF an amount of Rs 14,500 - the expenses incurred by the federation as solicitor's fees to fight the case of defender Habibur Rahman Mondal. AIFF was made a party in the case filed by Mohun Bagan against the youngster, who allegedly signed for East Bengal after taking advance payment from Bagan. While refusing to comment on the show cause notice, an East Bengal official said "why should our club pay for the expenses incurred by AIFF for the case, which was filed by Mohun Bagan?" East Bengal had delayed releasing their players for the national camp, held at the Sports Authority of India (eastern region) complex under the supervision of chief coach Stephen Constantine from August 5, with a view to make full use of the availability of British physical trainer Peter McKnight, who was hired for a short period.

The young forward was recently engaged with lowly ranked Ghanian outfit Power FC.
Asamoah on his decision to join Mahindra: "Yes, I would have got more money in Morocco and better grounds to play on but Odartey Lawson, who is my best friend, and David Booth, who has seen me play in Ghana, convinced me that I could help them win the national title here. I always was curious to know about Asia and the footballing culture. Since I got a chance to see it from close quarters, I decided to go for it. Besides, here I have Lawson and Booth for company."

Note-2: The 9th National Football League (NFL) will begin from the second week of December and conclude in April 2005. The recommendation of reducing the number of teams in the 1st Division NFL from 12 to 10 has been accepted by the AIFF. Thus four teams will be demoted at the end of the upcoming NFL season and just 10 will take part in the 10th NFL. Ten teams will also participate in the 2nd Division NFL this season, including relegated Mohammedan Sporting and Indian Bank. A 3rd Division will be introduced for the state league champions, who do not qualify for the second division.
A step backwards for Indian football! Reducing the number of teams in the National Football League is not in favour of improving and promoting Indian football. This move by the AIFF is also contraray to the recommendation made by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC)...

Note-1: The All India Football Federation has decided to stage the twice postponed Santosh Trophy in Delhi from October 14-31. The tournament was originally to be held in Kerala in May 2004. AIFF president Priyar Ranjan Dasmunshi said Kerala had backed out stating unavailability of grounds. The Santosh Trophy was then offered to Tamil Nadu and later Andhra Pradesh but both expressed their inability to stage the tournament. As the AIFF elections are due in December 2004, the office-bearers felt they would face a lot of flak if the senior national championships were not held for two consecutive years. It was last staged in Manipur in October-November 2002. The AIFF hence decided to allot the Santosh Trophy to Delhi and will sanction the Delhi Soccer Association (DSA) a sum of Rs 25--30 lakhs for staging the tournament. All this will be ratified at a working committee meeting in the capital on Saturday.

Note-2: East Bengal sent a letter to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) on Wednesday, protesting the referee’s decision to disallow Bijen Singh’s goal during the AFC Cup quarter final home match against Syrian outfit Al Jaish. Uzbek referee, Lutfullin Nail had first allowed the goal scored by Bijen, but later overturned his decision citing a foul on the Syrian goalkeeper. The move sparked protest and East Bengal officials handed an official complaint to match commissioner Mahesh Bista. The officials also drew the commissioner’s notice to the delay tactics employed by the Syrian team while taking the field after the breather. The team entered the ground seven minutes late after the lemon break. The officials have also forwarded a copy of their protest letter to the All India Football Federation.
Meanwhile, the team will leave for Damascus on Saturday. The return leg will be held on Wednesday. Douglas da Silva, who had a good game in the home leg despite injury, is expected to be fully fit when the team lands in Damascus.
