109th IFA-Shield - Final: East Bengal Club 0-0,0-0,3-5 Mohun Bagan AC (on penalties) - Goals: none.
Finally, all the Mohun Bagan fans out there have something to cheer about! In a fiercely contested match, Bagan edged out
East Bengal via the penalty shootout to lift the 109th IFA Shield at the Saltlake Stadium, Calcutta.
We all knew that the match was going to be a competitive affair, to say the least. And it was. Tackles flying in, heated
arguments, plenty of cards, both red and yellow - it was all there. The game was certainly not pretty, and neither team could
really create too many chances. Rarely did proceeding go on for even a minute without a rough tackle, and as a result the
match was a stop-start affair. Bagan's dynamic duo of Barreto and Marcos was rendered ineffective thanks to tight marking.
Renedy Singh too seemed to be off form. For East Bengal, skipper Suley Musah excelled in defence, with good support from M.
Suresh. The latter was eventually to turn villain, as he was the only one to miss his penalty. All in all, certainly not a
game for the faint hearted!
EAST BENGAL: Sangram Mukherjee, Surkumar Singh, Deepak Mondal (Sujoy Datta, Shubashish Roy Chowdhury, Suley Musah,
Shasti Duley, Malswam Tulunga (Alvito D'Cunha), Chandan Das, Dipankar Roy (Subhas Chakraborty), Bijen Singh.

Mumbai Elite League: Mahindra United 2-0 Central Railway - Goals: 1-0 Syed Altafuddin Ahmed, 2-0 Abhishek Yadav.
Note-1: Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi said in Hyderabad today that no football matches would be played outside Hyderabad. Reacting on reports that some football matches would be shifted outside Hyderabad, Kalmadi said "we have three football grounds of which two will be selected for the games and the question of any sport moving out does not arise". This comes only a day after TNFA president Viswanathan said that six group matches could be staged in Chennai.
Note-2: Baichung Bhutia's two month loan deal with Malaysian champions Perak FC came to a premature end, as Perak surprisingly lost 1-3 against Sabah in the Malaysian Cup second-leg at home in Ipoh, losing 2-4 on aggregate. Bhutia who scored four goals in the six weeks in Malaysia, has been praising the set-up and professionalism of his Malaysian club and the Malaysian FA, which Indian clubs and the AIFF should follow.
Note-3: In a somewhat surprise move, the Churchill Brothers management decided to field it's team today in a Goa Pro League match against Fransa FC, going against earlier statements of the club president and others that the club would boycott the last few league matches. But further the club management has decided to appeal to the GFA jury on the issue.

Mumbai Elite League: Air-India 2-0 Bengal Mumbai FC - Goals: 1-0 Appa Rao, 2-0 F Stephen Hmar.
Note-1: The AIFF vice-president and president of the Tamil Nadu FA CR Viswanathan informed the press in Chennai today that Chennai's Nehru Stadium could be host to football matches at next month's inaugural Afro-Asian Games in Hyderabad. The Afro-Asian Games organising committee has proposed to shift six league matches from Hyderabad to Chennai as their scheduled venue - the Gachibowli Stadium would not be available between October 21 to 23 due to the opening ceremony on October 24. If the Asian Football Confederation agrees to the proposal, then Chennai will get to host international football again after quite some time.
Note-2: Mohun Bagan's Nigerian recruit Chukwuma Olusegun Akuneto became the third foreign player of the century old club that reported non-payment of salaries to the AIFF with a copy of the letter to the FIFA players status committee. But now today he was paid his dues by assistant secretary Balaram Chowdhury for the month and has pulled back his claim's with the AIFF and FIFA but was surprising is that the player wasn't allowed to train with the team ahead of tomorrow's IFA-Shield final, which means the player is no long wanted. But what can cause Bagan more problems is that the players had signed a three-month contract starting from July 18, which runs until October 18, meaning the club even if not using his services will have pay another month's salary. Initially Akuneto had received Rs 100,000 plus now another Rs 40,000 but Rs 70,000 is owed to him until October 18, otherwise another letter will follow. So Bagan will have to watch out, as it is already in the FIFA books of clubs who do not keep their contractual obligations. Only Isa Musah Eroje and George Ekeh have reported to FIFA but the club is also said to owe a number of Indian players payments from last season.

109th IFA-Shield - Semifinal: East Bengal Club 2-0 EverReady Association - Goals: Douglas da Silva (29'), 2-0
Dipankar Roy (55').
The dream run had to send sooner than later-and it did. Defending champions East Bengal beat giantkillers EverReady
Association 2-0 to march into the finals of the IFA-Shield, where they will meet arch rivals Mohun Bagan.
After the exciting match played yesterday, the second semifinal turned out to be a damp squib. Slushy ground conditions
did not help, and the match was a very scrappy affair. East Bengal took the lead through Brazilian defender Douglas da
Silva's header off a swerving corner. They doubled their lead through Dipankar Roy in the second half. Roy was guilty of
missing several chances prior to this, and must have been very happy to make amends. EverReady's trump card Earnest Jeremiah
was rendered ineffective thanks to tight marking by Suley Musah. Playmaker Jayanta Sen too was off color, and EverReady could
never really create any clear opening.
East Bengal will, however, not be entirely happy - key player Douglas shall miss the final after collecting his second
yellow card. The match will still be a humdinger, no doubt.
EAST BENGAL: Sangram Mukherjee, Deepak Mondal, Shubashish Roy Chowdhury, Suley Musah, Surkumar Singh, Malswam

Note-1: After receicing the disciplinary committee report, the Goa FA has imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on
Churchill Brothers president Churchill Alemao and suspended him from any football related activities upto the end of the Goa
Pro League. Further the club was fined Rs 5,000.
The two Churchill Bros players - Denzil Ferrao and Reagan Alemao have also attracted disciplinary action. Denzil Ferrao
has been suspended for eight matches and fined Rs 5,000 for assaulting the referee while Reagan Alemao has been suspended for
four matches and fined Rs 5,000 for manhandling the referee. Churchill Bros secretary Ciabro Alemao got away with caution for
misconduct and misbevahiour with the supervising officials. But one official - Cruz Ferrao and two players - Osumanu Husseini
and Noel Wilson got away with no fines or whatsoever.
As a reaction on the action taken by the GFA, Churchill Brothers SC will not take part in the remainder of the Goa Pro
League.

Sadly INDIA's slide down the FIFA world rankings continue. In the latest September 2003 ranking India are now ranked
133th in the world, three places down from their August ranking. In Asia India continue to be the 22th ranked nation.
But the fall in rankings doesn't have anything to do with India's standard of football, rather it is the fault of the
AIFF administration as we have so far only played two "A" International against North Korea in the Asia Cup qualifiers. And
ahead of the Afro-Asian Games friendly matches are unlikely but lets hope in future the AIFF will do more for the national
team.
109th IFA-Shield - Semifinal: Mohun Bagan AC 4-1 Tollygunge Agragami - Goals: 1-0 Rishi Kapoor (21'), 1-1 Isiaka
Awoyemi (23'), 2-1,4-1 Jose Barreto (48',89'), 3-1 Marcos Pereira (72').
Well, the first semifinal of the IFA- Shield is over, and one thing is evident to anybody who saw the match - Mohun Bagan
is back. Yes, make no mistake, the team is finding its feet again, after a poor start to the season. And once again, it's a
certain Jose Barreto who's made the difference. He put on yet another commanding show as Mohun Bagan hammered Tollygunge
Agragami 4-1.
The scoreline, however, can be a touch misleading. The first half was a very competitive affair, with Tollygunge actually
looking the better of the two sides for quite some time. However it was Mohun Bagan who took the lead, through Rishi Kapoor.
The left-back's attempted cross swerved into the goal, leaving the Tollygunge goalkeeper Chinmoy Banerjee totally bewildered.
However, Tollygunge showed some character to fight back soon after, through Isiaka's powerful header. The scored remained 1-1
at half time, and Bagan coach Aloke Mukherjee must have no doubt been a worried man. But he did pull out a rabbit out of the
hat, when he brought in right back Babun Kar instead of Lolendra Singh, who looked really poor. Kar is an energetic player,
and moved up quite often, showing good vision. Bagan stepped up several gears in the second half, and to no surprise took the
lead once again through Barreto. It was one-way traffic after that - Bagan scored again through some Brazilian magic, with
Barreto setting up substitute Marcos Pereira. Barreto added yet another goal to his tally soon after, to round off a perfect
outing.
One half of the dream final is complete, and if East Bengal does manage to beat underdogs EverReady, then we can look
forward to some fireworks on Sunday.
MOHUN BAGAN: Prasanta Dora, Manitombi Singh, Debkumar Sashmal (Harpreet Singh), Sanjeev Kumar Maria, Lolendra
Singh (Babun Kar), Mehtab Hussain, Renedy Singh, Palash Karmakar, Rishi Kapoor, Jose Barreto, Sunil Chetri (Marcos Pereira).
TOLLYGUNGE: Chinmoy Banerjee, Gautam Debnath, Isiaka Awoyemi, Kajal Bhattacharya, Partha Sarathi Dey, Manik Barman
(Sujit Neogi), Shamshi Reza, Amit Das (Laltu Das), Suman Dutta (Chinmoy Sarkar); Temjen Kibang, Akeem Abul Alem.

Note-1: Two meetings and the disciplinary committee of the Goa FA is yet to decide on punitive sanctions
against officials and players of Churchill Bros, who are alleged of assaulting match officials after their encounter with
Dempo SC, at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda.
The Disciplinary Committee will meet again tomorrow, Friday, September 26, at GFA headquarters, Panjim.
Three officials including Churchill Bros boss Churchill Alemao and four players including captain Osumanu Husseini have
come under the GFA scanner for their behaviour after the controversy-ridden Churchill Bros' clash with Dempo, at Nehru
Stadium, Fatorda.
According to sources within the GFA, the disciplinary committee will have its third meeting tomorrow, in as many days.
"Yesterday's meeting was inconclusive," the source told Herald adding that the Disciplinary Committee headed by former
Director of Sports Eustaquio Pereira wanted to "study the case in minute detail" before announcing the sanctions.
No sooner the Disciplinary Committee conclave concludes, the executive committee of the GFA will be cuddled in another
meeting. It is pertinent to note that the Disciplinary Committee pass their decisions entirely independently and in
particular, are not entitled to receive instructions from any other body, as stipulated in Article 91 of the FIFA
Disciplinary Committee.
Members of the executive committee are also not entitled to stay in the meeting room during the disciplinary committee
deliberations unless they are explicitly summoned to attend.
There are talks doing the rounds that the Disciplinary Committee would give a personal hearing to Churchill Bros
officials during tomorrow's meeting.
Meanwhile, Joaquim Alemao president of Churchill Bros today said they would stick to the decision of boycotting the
remainder of the matches in the Videocon Professional League including the one on Sunday, September 28, against archrivals
Fransa FC. "What we decided at the last meeting is final. Unless the GFA withdraws the suspensions on Churchill Alemao,
Ciabro Alemao and Cruz Ferrao, we will remain unmoved," the former GFA president maintained.
Mr Alemao said Churchill Bros were awaiting the decision of the GFA Disciplinary Committee. "Let the committee say what
the decision is. We will then take it up at our club meeting and decide on what needs to be done. As of now our stand remains
unchanged," Mr Alemao told Herald.
Note-2: After skirting the issue for a day, the Goa Football Association today confirmed that Salgaocar SC
have been awarded three points and a 3-0 win following Churchill Bros SC's boycott yesterday, at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda.
GFA secretary Savio Messias told Herald that since Churchill Bros failed to report at the scheduled time of play, the
match was treated as a walk-over to Salgaocar. "As per (GFA) rules, the score was declared as 3-0 in favour of Salgaocar,
since they were present at the venue," Mr Messias informed Herald.
There was however no word on the quantum of fine imposed on the Varca-based side. However, according to Article 28 of
GFA's Official Competitions Rules, a team failing to turn up at the scheduled time can be fined a maximum of Rs 500.
The GFA is expected to determine the quantum of fine when the executive committee meets on Friday, September 26, at GFA
headquarters (Panjim).
The three points enable Salgaocar leapfrog to the top of the table with 17 points from eight encounters. Sporting Clube
de Goa are second with 16 points from eight matches. Both teams will lock horns on Sunday, September 28, at GFA grounds,
Duler, to decide who remains at the top.

Note-1: After all the controversies of the last few days, Churchill Brothers SC have now pulled their team
out of the ongoing Goa Pro League. This was stated by Churchill Brothers president, Joaquim Alemao, MLA and former Goa FA
president. Actually Churchill was supposed to play Salgaocar tomorrow, which they won't do now.
Churchill Bros had threatened such a drastic step if it's demands weren't met by the GFA. Joaquim Alemao said: "The
Churchill management had written to the GFA yesterday seeking withdrawal of suspensions imposed on Churchill Alemao, Cruz
Ferrao and Ciabro Alemao. Since the GFA did not bother to respond to our letter we were forced to arrive at the decision of
pulling out."
Note-2: After yesterday's loss to EverReady Association and elimination from the IFA-Shield in the group stage Mohammedan Sporting club coach Mohammed Habib days at the club seem to be numbered. In such a situation Habib leaves for home (Hyderabad) and many think it could be without return. Habib has come under severe criticism and pressure from certain club officials for dismal performances of the club since the start of the season. If Habib will be fired or remain in charge of the team isn't sure at the moment.

Note-1: Will the AIFF start a national football academy in Bangalore or not?
The AIFF president said in Jamshedpur at the JRD TATA Cup that the AIFF would ask the Tata Football Academy for technical
help/advice for the to be founded national football academy, while a few days earlier AIFF secretary Alberto Colaco had said,
the plans for such an academy have been put on hold, due to financial problems of the AIFF, as it couldn't finance such a
project at the moment.
The plans for such an academy had initially been given to the AIFF by world governing body FIFA and as per earlier plans,
the academy's infrastructure was supposed to be financed by FIFA as part of the Goal Project, were also the AIFF would built
it's own headquarters in Delhi.
The question is why is suddenly the national academy of the agenda, when initially finance would come from FIFA.

Note-1: Churchill Brothers SC patron Churchill Alemao today charged that a deep rooted conspiracy is being
hatched against him and his team and that he should not be blamed in the event of him withdrawing his team from the ongoing
Videocon Professional State football league.
Demanding that unless the show cause notices served on him by the Goa Football Association, for allegedly assaulting the
assistant referee in the Churchill league match against Dempo, were withdrawn and issues settled, Churchill Alemao in a
press release, claimed that it is perfectly normal for him to withdraw his team as his 'efforts' were not welcomed by the
GFA.
"I leave it to the public to be the final judges in the issue and prevail upon the GFA to maintain better sense," the
relase quoted Churchill.
Mr Alemao pointed out that he had complained to the GFA on August 23 that assistant referee Benjamin D'Silva should not
officiate any Churchill Bros matches, as he had sound reasons for suspecting the prejudices of Benjamin.
Instead of spelling out what are Benjamin's prejudices against Churchill Bros, Mr Alemao instead turned his heat on
referee Joao Pereira from Santa Cruz, revealing that he is a mundkar (tennant) of the Dempo family and who is nicknamed
'Dempo', once a prominent member of Dempo Engineering, Mr Alemao charged.
"The reasons for the 'bias' that Joao showed towards the Dempo team is thus plausible," Mr Alemao said.
Mr Alemao said that the GFA let the officials got scott free without seeking an explanation from them, who were
responsible to ensure "my team lose three points and possibly the league title".
He said, what he called cheating by the referees, had infuriated the spectators and that the GFA was instead trying to
shift the blame on the team management. Mr Alemao charged that instead of tackling the issue of impartial refeering by
employing outstation refeeres the GFA chooses to turn a Nelson's eye to the acts of omission and commission of its own
refrees.
Has the GFA suddenly become so disciplinary conscious that worse incidents like the Salgaocar-Air India National League
match, where players were admitted with injuries in hospitals after scuffles on the field, saw no official of the teams or
its managemetns having to face any notice ?, the release, faxed to the Herald on a Churchill Alemao, ex-Chief Minister and
ex-MP letter head questioned.

Note-1: When the playoff final of the Calcutta Super Division between defending champions East Bengal - Mohun Bagan hasn't been decided yet by the IFA but it feels that after the Afro-Asian Games (October 21-November 1) football tournament the final would have a proper surrounding with all stars likely to be on board ahead of the start of the National League. But something the IFA maybe hasn't thought about is the fact that the Durand Cup has been planned for November 1 to 12. So lets see when the final is going to be held.
Note-2: Three Churchill Brothers Officials and two players have been suspended until September 25 as per the
decision taken at the disciplinary committee meeting of the Goa FA, at Nehru stadium Fatorda, today evening for their role in
the assault of referee Joao Pereira and assistant referee Benjamin D'Silva after the Churchill-Dempo match on September 17.
The three officials suspended include Churchill Alemao, Ciabro Alemao and Cruz Ferrao while the two players suspended are
defender Denzil Ferrao and goalkeeper Reagan Alemao. The disciplinary committee will meet again on September 25 to decide the
after of their three officials and two players, who have been slapped with show cause notice by GFA on Thursday and given
three days time to reply to the show cause. Sources in GFA informed that disciplinary committee deliberated on the report
submitted by the four match officials Joao Pereira, Benjamin D'Silva, Adley D'Costa, Francis Lobo besides match commissioner,
Romeo Pires. The decision to suspend the five has been taken with a view to give this officials and players an opportunity to
reply to the show cause and further course of action from the disciplinary committee would be based on the reply to be
furnished by them.
Incidentally two players Osamanu Husseini and Noel Wilson both whom have been slapped with show cause find themselves
escaping the superior order. The duo two have to reply to the show cause in three days time.
"As the result of the ban this five persons will not be permitted to enter the playing field and occupy the bench. Also
the official and player cards given by the GFA will be withdrawn," GFA secretary Savio Messias told Herald.
"The ban is only till September 25 as the GFA disciplinary committee will meet again for a personal hearing with this all
five Churchill officials, after which the committee will take the final decision.
"Meanwhile, the Goa Football Referees Association has strongly condemned the violent incident of assaulting the referees
and asst referees on September 17, at Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, Fatorda, soon after the match between Dempo-Churchill.

Note-1: The Goa Football Association today served notices on Churchill Brothers SC boss Churchill Alemao and
six others asking them to show cause as to why action should not be taken against them for their violent behaviour, after the
match wherein their team Churchill Bros lost by a solitary goal to Dempo SC, at Nehru Stadium, yesterday.
Besides Churchill Alemao, others who were issued show cause notices include Club's secretary-cum-manager Ciabro Alemao,
technical official Cruz Ferrao, Reagan Alemao, Danzie Ferrao, Noel Wilson and Osumanu Husseini.
All of them have been given three days' time to reply to the show cause notice, before the Disciplinary Committee meets
to decide on the next course of action.
"As I said yesterday, action will be taken against those who are found guilty. Those who are at fault will definitely be
punished," GFA secretary Savio Messias told Herald.
The GFA had to act - and fast - after referee Joao Pereira and assistant referee Benjamin D'Silva, were reported to have
been assaulted by Churchill Bros. Both the referees were invited the wrath of irate Churchill officials and supporters after
disallowing a goal claim by Churchill Bros.
Churchill Alemao, however, has stoutly denied the allegations levelled by asst referee Benjamin D'Silva.
The Disciplinary Committee of the GFA will be meeting tomorrow, at Nehru Stadium (Fatorda) to deliberate on reports from
referee Joao Pereira, asst referee Benjamin D'Silva, Adley D'Costa, reserve referee Savio Lobo and match commissioner Romeo
Pires. All five submitted their reports to the GFA, this morning.
The GFA's Disciplinary Committee is chaired by former Director of Sports Eustaquio Pereira and has Adv Nuno Colaco,
Agnelo Mascarenhas, Cyril Rodrigues and Pradeep Padgaonkar as members.
The disciplinary committee will meet again, perhaps early next week, to deliberate on the replies from the Churchill
brigade. "The committee has to decide on the next course of action," said Mr Messias.
Meanwhile, Churchill Alemao today claimed that Joao Pereira, who officiated yesterday's violence-marred encounter, is a
Dempo SC loyalist. "The referee is a strong Dempo supporter. I can vouch for that. Little wonder, he disallowed a goal, which
we had clearly scored," Churchill Alemao told Herald. "Except for the referee, everyone know for sure that the goal is
legitimate," the burly Churchill added.
Whilst taking a swipe at Joao's educational qualifications, Churchill claimed most of the Goan football enthusiasts know
for sure where Pereira's loyalty lies. He further said, Dempo's win against his team in the Videocon Professional League was
pre-planned.
Note-2: Vasco Judicial Magistrate First Class Ashley Noronha today granted Nigerian footballer Amachukawas
Innocent, presently residing at Vasco da Gama, conditional bail.
While granting the bail application filed by Advocate EO Mendes, the Vasco JMFC in its order stated that the grounds
mentioned by the police for custody, were not maintainable, considering that the accused was in police custody since
September 9.
The tampering of the witnesses cannot be believed as the police Inspector of Vasco Police Station himself is the
complainant and further no statements of witnesses are recorded, states the order.
It is further stated that Innocent, shall reside at his temporary address at Vasco, and is permitted to attend practice
sessions.
The accused has also to take prior permission from the Investigating officer in case he has to go outside Vasco or Goa.
The accused shall not go out of India without prior permission of this Court, states the order, adding that he shall apply
for necessary permits for temporary residence from the concerned authorities.
Innocent was also ordered to produce two local sureties of Rs 10,000 each and on non-production of such surety, the
accused would be remanded to police custody and produced before the Court on September 19.
Innocent had been arrested on September 9 allegedly for forgery for the purpose of cheating and for using as genuine a
forged document under Section 468 and 471 of Indian Penal Code, and Section 7 (i) (3) (iii) of Foreigners Order Act. Since
then, he was in police custody.
The remand application filed by Police Sub Inspector S Shirodkar stated that the accused is required in police custody in
order to trace other foreigners who are residing in Goa and India by using the same means to stay illegally.
The accused is a foreigner and if released he will temper with evidence, might jump bail and threaten the witnesses,
stated the application.
It may be recalled that Police Inspector of Vasco Police Station Mahesh K Gaonkar complained that from January 9, 2003
till date the accused had entered in India with forged visa and was using the same as genuine.
When checked upon information, it was confirmed that the accused continued staying in the country violating the visa
conditions and immigration rules and regularities. The case is being investigated by PSI S Shirodkar.
Note-3: The venue for the Group 4 Asian U17 Youth Cup qualifiers is still undecided. Group 4 consists of
India, Nepal and Afghanistan. While Afghanistan isn't able to host such a qualifying tournament, both India and Nepal want to
host it, India naming it's capital Delhi as a possible venue, while Nepal's capital Kathmandu is the Nepali choice. Now the
AFC will have to decide, whom to give the right to host the three-team tournament, which is supposed to start on October 11.
The Indian under-17 national team is currently holding a preparatory camp at the SAI complex, Saltlake Stadium in
Calcutta with Johar Das in-charge as coach and former IFA secretary Ranjit Gupta as the project director.

Note-1: Goa Football Association speaking to the Herald newspaper, promised that action would definitely be
taken against those who were involved in today's violence.
"I am awaiting the match commissioners report, which will be forwarded to the Disciplinary Committee for necessary
action," Messias told Herald.
Messias also informed Herald there was no way they (GFA) could act on Churchill Bros' letter. "We cannot consider the
club's request as far as referees appointments are concerned. Moreover, Churchill Bros had not assigned any reason," the GFA
secretary told Herald.
Match Commissioner Romeo Pires said he would submit a detailed report tomorrow to the GFA.
Meanwhile, eyewitnesses told Herald Ciabro Alemao kicked and slapped referee Joao Pereira along with defender Danzie
Ferrao (not part of the Churchill team today) as the officials were making their way towards the changing room.
Referee Joao Pereira informed that he clearly saw Danzie Ferrao assaulting him while Ciabro Alemao, he said, also
advanced dangerously. Assistant referee Benjamin D'Silva was also at the receiving end of Churchill Bros' ire. "Churchill
Alemao manhandled me," Benjamin told reporters after the match adding that he believed he did a fair job on the field.
Churchill Alemao, however, stoutly denied Benjamin's allegation insisting that he was the one who infact tried to bring
the situation under control. "I did not even touch Benjamin. He is simply cooking stories," Churchill told this paper when
contacted.
"In a letter to the GFA, we had specifically said that we do not want Benjamin D'Silva to stand in any of our matches
since he has got a bias against us. Why was he fielded today," asked Churchill Alemao. "If things go this way, football will
go to the dogs," he added.
The Goa Football Association should also shoulder responsibility for not providing any sort of security unlike past
years. There were no security at all, seen in the stadium.
The fracas could have been avoided had there been adequate police or private security personnel at the stadium.
Mr Messias, admitted that the security at the stadium was inadequate but said they needed people's total cooperation to
make football remain a beautiful game. He however said the GFA would continue with the practice of having local referee for
local matches. "We cannot be cowed down by such incidences," he reiterated.
What was surprising to note was that despite a ban, glass bottles were smuggled inside the stadium. The glass bottles,
more often than not are used by supporters as missiles to target referees. One such missile, today, narrowly missed referee
Joao Pereira.
Note-2: Mohun Bagan coach Aloke Mukherjee has been called-up by the AIFF to be assistant coach of the senior national team for the inaugural Afro-Asian Games. The AIFF has send out the appointment letter, which Aloke will receive tomorrow from the IFA. The Bagan coach is happy about the appointment but will wait until tomorrow to get the okay from his club and then join chief coach Stephen Constantine for the preparatory camp, which starts on October 2. Stephen and Aloke had worked together last year during the successful LG Cup and Asian Games campaigns.
Note-3: It seems like bad times have hit East Bengal's Nigerian/Polish striker Mike Okoro. Yesterday he
was handed a heavy punishment by the IFA for misconduct and also yesterday got injured in the match against Tollygunge. But
all this is nothing against the news that Mike Okoro got today from Poland: His new-born baby girl Juliette, born on July 21,
2003 is dead. Okoro received this info from a friend from Poland and as it seems the girl had died a few days back and the
news hadn't been passed on to Okoro. Okoro directly took leave from East Bengal and left for Poland.
The indianfootball.com team will pray for Mike Okoro and his family that they get through these difficult times. When
such things happen, football becomes secondary...

Note-1: The discipline committee of the Indian Football Association met in Calcutta today and punished 13
players of the Maidan big three - East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan Sporting plus three officials for misconduct during
two derby matches. Mohun Bagan's Brazilian Jose Barreto and East Bengal's Nigerian Mike Okoro had been added to the list over
the weekend, while Bagan's Sanjib Maria and Rishi Kapoor had been cleared from any mistakes.
IFA secretary Subrata Dutta said: "Those fined must pay up the amount by October 31, failing which they will remain on
suspension till making the payment. They can, however, appeal before the IFA governing body within 24 hours after receiving
the letter."
In all, six Mohun Bagan and four East Bengal players were punished for misconduct at the September 4 derby clash while
three Mohammedan Sporting footballers were punished for ground violence during their tie against East Bengal on August 19.
Mohammedan Sporting captain Dipendu Biswas and defender Hussain Mustafi - were only cautioned.
The Punishments - Mohun Bagan: Jose Barreto (one match suspension - Rs 30,000; Mehtab Hossain (one match suspension - Rs
30,000); Marcos Pereira (Rs 20,000), Lolendra Singh (Rs 10,000), Basudeb Mondal (Rs 10,000), Abhay Kumar (Rs 10,000). East
Bengal: Mike Okoro (one match suspension - Rs 30,000), Mahesh Gawli (Rs 30,000), Deepak Mondal (Rs 10,000), Debjit Ghosh (Rs
10,000). Mohammedan Sporting: Zaheer Abbas (one match suspension - Rs 30,000), Sheikh Sanjib (one match suspension - Rs
10,000), Amjad Ali Khan (Rs 10,000).
Note-2: Federation Cup champions Mahindra United have been invited to take part in the "President of Maldives Invitation Soccer Cup" as the Indian club representative from October 14 to 24. The Football Association of Maldives had asked the AIFF to send an Indian team for the tournament and as the Federation Cup champions, Mahindra United's name was send to FAM, who accepted. But due to the preparatory camp of the Indian national team, Mahindra would miss four of their players - Arun Malhotra, Shanmugam Venkatesh, James Singh, Abhishek Yadav. So it would be a chance for the fringe players and youngsters to gain international experience and prove their worth to coach David Booth ahead of the National League.
Note-3: According to sources in Goa, Vasco's Nigerian player Innocent will most likely be deported back to Nigeria in the coming days. Also none of the Vasco officials are saying anything on the issue, surprisingly, as they were the one's to blame East Bengal's Brazilian Douglas da Silva to have played without valid documents in India earlier in the year.
Note-4: Here an Indo-Asian News Service report by Syed Zarir Hussain:
Be careful if you are a footballer in India's northeastern state of Assam and rejoice too much after winning a match. You
may be shot dead by the police. In a shocking incident on Monday evening, police shot dead a footballer and seriously wounded
at least six more players in Chungajan village in eastern Assam, 320 km from principal city Guwahati.
"A victorious football team was returning home with a trophy in the evening, all of them singing and dancing, when some
policemen asked them not to get over excited," a senior police official said.
"But in the heat of the moment, the police opened fire, killing one and injuring a few of the players."
Assam Police chief Hare Krishna Deka Tuesday ordered a high-level probe into the incident and suspended the
officer-in-charge of the police station in the area where it occurred.

If you are in Delhi, 12 years or younger, then this could be your chance to become a football professional:
This month the Super Soccer Academy is opening Delhi's first Centre of Soccer Excellence. To be called the Super Soccer
Advanced Academy it will follow the same rules and have the same structure as the Centres of Excellence run by the leading
English professional clubs. What's more, the Super Soccer Academy have enlisted the internationally renown Reebok Master
Trainers to deliver one of the most comprehensive fitness programmes ever devised for child football players in India. Not
only this! Reebok India are also supplying the football kit for the aspiring soccer super stars.
Entry to the Super Soccer Advanced Academy is by a trial which will be held at 9:00 on Saturday the September 20 at the
Shri Ram School, DLF. Those accepted into the Super Soccer Advanced Academy will attend three times a week. Each child will
be given an individualized training schedule and weekly fitness and technical targets to meet.
"We are looking for player who are technically proficient in all of the six turns, two dribbles and in running with and
without the ball, as well as passing and receiving. Regardless of their technical proficiency, overweight or unfit players
will not be accepted." says Bill Adams the Director of the Super Soccer Academy. Bill adds, "We believe in integrity,
discipline and hard work, and so we plan to choose honest, positive, committed and driven, "diamonds in the rough" over
"superstars" whose attitude and dedication might raise concerns".
Entry to the Super Soccer Advanced Academy is highly restricted. Only 20 will be accepted into the first batch and all be
12 years of age or under.
Once accepted into the Super Soccer Advanced Academy the children will be expected to follow a stringent regime. Bill
Adams expects the withdrawal rate to be very high. "Attendance at every session is compulsory. Failure to strive for
continuous improvement, or meet their personal fitness targets will lead to the player being asked to withdraw. Age cheats
will be thrown out immediately! In the UK the drop-out rate is 80+% and we expect the same here. Each player will be fully
reviewed every three months and we will be holding ongoing trials to find replacements".
At the end of the four-year course, successful players will be recommended to top Indian and international clubs. There
are free places and assisted travel for children from poor families.
If you are 12 years or under you can get further details and a registration form from the Super Soccer Academy, D-337

Now Nassiri is technical director at Calcutta Super Division club Wari AC, who were promoted to the top-flight of Calcutta football but the senario looks bleak as all season the club was only able to gather three points. Now the club management have asked the retired Iranian to don the club colours for the relegation matches as the last resort. Nassiri has agreed to play, so it will be "Back to the Future" for him.

Since the news had come out that Mohun Bagan would try to sign Michael Chopra and Vikash Dhorasoo on loan for the
National League, we at indianfootball.com have been trying to get some statements from the clubs Newcastle United and
Olympique Lyon on the issue.
Neil Farrington, chief sportswriter at the Sunday Sun newspaper in Newcastle, spoke to Newcastle coach Sir Bobby Robson
on the prospect of Chopra joining Mohun Bagan and he was as dismissive of it as we at indianfootball.com had been earlier.
Robson insisted neither he nor anyone else at Newcastle had heard anything from anybody at Bagan as we at
indianfootball.com were also told by the Newcastle management, they didn't even know about a club called Mohun Bagan. And
Robson is his ironic style said: "Michael might go out for a curry one night but that's as close as he'll get to moving to
India in the near future!"
So I guess that should clarify the issue for once and for all.

Now the players would have to appear on Sunday.
Note-2: The Delhi Soccer Association disciplinary committee today met to decide the fate of the abandoned Tarun Sangha-Raisina Sporting Union with the abandoned match has been awarded 2-1 to Tarun Sangha. Note-1: The interest in Baichung Bhutia from foreign clubs continue. Now Bangladeshi club Brothers Union have send in a request to East Bengal to loan the Indian captain for their local engagements. But the request has been turned down by the East Bengal management, who will need the services of the Tinkatim Express after he returns from Malaysia for the National League.
Note-2: East Bengal Club think it will be very unlikely that the club can take part in the JVC Cup in Vietnam due to non-availability of a number of players, who would be with the national team at the end of October. The club had worked on arranging sponsorship for the trip but as national coach Stephen Constantine wouldn't and couldn't release the East Bengal players from the national team, the East Bengal team wouldn't be complete to travel to Vietnam.

Note-2: It's another of those days where one can only wonder about Mohun Bagan. Have the people controlling
affairs at the club now totally lost contact to the real world???
First reached us the news in the afternoon that Mohun Bagan are trying to sign European top class "Players of Indian
Origin" Vikash Dhorasoo and Michael Chopra on loan for the National League in December. When we had our daily chief editors
conversation Chris and I had really a good laugh.
Mohun Bagan, a club which can't even pay their players their monthly salaries properly, having even been fined by world
governing body FIFA for non-payment of salaries to a foreign recruit is now trying to sign Dhorasoo and Chopra???
Just as infos for you all. 31 year old Vikash Dhorasoo plays for French champions Olympique Lyonnaise, who will be
playing in the European Champions League from next week onwards and Dhorasoo was voted as Lyon's player of the 2002/03
season last season.
19 year old Michael Chopra plays for English Premier League side Newcastle United, is an England under-20 international
and is seen in Newcastle as the heir to seasoned Alan Shearer with whom he has a number of things in common. And finally,
Chopra's personal management is SFX, who among others look after David Beckham and Michael Owen.
And such players would play in India? Can anyone pay such players in India?
I not only have my doubts but have to say that what these players earn in Europe is more than what the budgets of Indian
clubs are, so I fear Bagan are either trying to make some noise to cover-up something or they are really naive and don't
know what international football is about.
Also later in the day the news came out that Bagan got another letter from FIFA regarding non-payment of salaries to a
foreign recruit. This time it is former Nigerian player George Ekeh, whom Bagan owe US-Dollars 6,500. Bagan are trying to
avoid the FIFA fine and are said to be in contact with Ekeh, so that the player pulls his request back from FIFA and maybe
signed again by Bagan this season.

1-0 Haradhan Kora, 1-1 Robin Das, 2-1 Pushpender Dhondiyal.
Note-1: Excerpts from a Hindustan Times Delhi report: The Delhi Soccer Association Super League had an
inauspicious beginning at the Ambedkar Stadium on Monday as the second match of the day between Tarun Sangha and Raisina
Sporting had to be abandoned 12 minutes from time after the latter refused to continue. Tarun Sangha were leading 2-1 at that
time.
And as if that was not enough, the referee for the match, Mohammed Naseeb, got badly injured when a section of the
spectators, who got violent, resorted to throwing glass bottles at him. He suffered a deep cut on his head and had to be
rushed for medical attention.
The entire episode started in the 68th minute when the referee first allowed the Raisina 'equaliser' by Indraneel Barua
from a melee and subsequently cancelled it after one of the assistant referees, Govind Kanojia, raised his flag for a foul
on the goalkeeper. Thereafter, all hell broke lose and the tie had to be abandoned as Raisina players refused to continue.
Some of the Raisina players were seen moving threateningly towards the supervisors, but the matter did not go out of hand.
A couple of minutes later their supporters who numbered more than 4,000 hurled empty bottles onto the pitch. The police
had to be called in to take control of the situation.
Note-2: For talented youngsters in the Darjeeling hills this could be their chance to be spotted. An under-14 training camp will be held in Darjeeling jointly by the IFA (Bengal body) together with the Gorkha Hill Sports Association to find and groom local talent. The selection trials will last two days, while the nine-month camp starts for the boys in October.

Note-1: Country over club or club over country?
Well around the world it is clear that country comes first and then only come the clubs but in India sometimes one has to
question if the clubs know that.
National coach Stephen Constantine had to clarify in Jamshedpur today that none of the East Bengal players would be
released from the Indian Afro-Asian Games squad for East Bengal's participation at the JVC Cup in Vietnam which starts on
October 31, clashing with the Afro-Asian Games and also the Durand Cup.
But in Calcutta East Bengal's management meanwhile said that it will see, which players it would release for the
Afro-Asian Games camp. So problems could arise.
Stephen meanwhile said that no one should expect too much from the Indian team at the Afro-Asian Games, where India would
have to face though opposition from Asia and Africa. The Indian camp would be held from October 2 to 22 in Goa.
Note-2: The JRD Tata Cup International invitational football championship (under-19) will be held at the JRD
Tata Sports Complex in Jamshedpur from September 11 to 22, 2003. Besides two teams from the hosts India, also participating
will be Iran, Uzbekistan and Bangladesh. The hosts India will be playing with India TFA Blue, the Indian U18 boys who won the
Ian Rush Trophy in Wales and made an impact at the Milk Cup in Northern Ireland plus an India TFA White. The blues will be
coached by national coach Stephen Constantine with TFA coach Ranjan Chowdhury as his assistant, while the whites would have
junior assistant national coach Satheevan Balan as their coach.
Round Robin League: 11/09: India Blue - Bangladesh; 12/09: Uzbekistan - Iran; 13/09: India White - Bangladesh;
14/09: India Blue - Uzbekistan; 15/09: India White - Iran; 16/09: Bangladesh - Uzbekistan; 17/09: India Blue - India White;

Note-1: East Bengal Club's success in the ASEAN Club Championships in Indonesia a few weeks back have made
the Indian champions a big name in southeast Asia. The club has loaned it's best players in Baichung Bhutia for two month's
to the Malaysian champions for good money, now East Bengal have received an invitation from Vietnam Football Federation to
take part in the six team JVC Cup to be held in Gia Lai Province of Vietnam. But another reason for the invitation of the
Indian champions as the tournament will be organised by STRATA Sports, who are also the marketing agents of the AIFF.
The tournament will be held between October 31 to November 8, 2003. If East Bengal take part, then they will not be able
to defend their title at the Durand Cup, which is scheduled for November 1 to 12.
Note-2: East Bengal's list of casualties due to injuries and cards are growing by each match plus the absence of Baichung Bhutia loaned to Malaysian club Perak FC. In an earlier match of the Calcutta Super Division Alvito D'Cunha had injured himself, today Deepak Mondal got a red card while Debjit Ghosh two yellow bookings but the most worrying thing is the ankle injury which Surkumar Singh picked-up. Until an X-Ray it won't be clear what Surkumar actually has and how long he would have to sit out but he might be out for some time. Hopefully no ligament tear and a longer break.
Note-3: The good news from the Kashmir valley is that sports is once again becoming more and more part of daily life. And now the government of Jammu&Kashmir is working to hold a national-level football tournament with top teams from across India participating. So far dates and teams haven't been announced but that such a tournament is being planned is a good sign.

Note-1: On Sunday last in Mumbai Baichung Bhutia and 9 Yards, a new sports and entertainment management
company officially started their relationship. 9 Yards will manage Baichung and try to get him more personal contracts and
endorsements.
Now Baichung has a plan where 9 Yards could be his partners. Baichung would like to organise a football tournament only
for the Indian NorthEast with the first edition likely to be held early next year. Currently 9 Yards are working on the
finances of the venture, which would surely make headlines with Baichung involved in a big way.
Note-2: The 25th Sikkim Governor's Gold Cup has been scheduled to be played from October 8 to 18 at the Baichung Bhutia stadium in Namchi, south Sikkim. The tournament would be played with 16 teams, among them Bangladeshis Chittagong Abahani, NFL-side Indian Bank, Mohammedan AC and George Telegraph SC.
Note-3: When the 52nd Bordoloi Trophy and with which teams it will be held isn't clear at the moment, as there seems to be a communication gap between the local organisers, the Guwahati Sports Association and the AIFF. According to the original plans of the GSA, this seasons Bordoloi Trophy would be held with appro. 20 teams. The initial phase would begin on November 1 and the quarterfinal league could start only on November 12 due to the One-Day International Cricket match at the Nehru Stadium, Guwahati. The GSA asked the AIFF for infos on when the National League to start, so as to try and accomodate the Bordoloi Trophy accordingly. But as the NFL is set to start by mid-November and earlier the Afro-Asian Games being held, it would be unlikely that NFL teams could take part. But for the GSA surprisingly it got a reply from the AIFF stating that for the Bordoloi Trophy and the GSA, the dates of the NFL wouldn't be pushed back. A question according to the GSA it didn't ask or make an application for.

Note-1: Lucky escape for Mohun Bagan's Brazilian star striker Jose Barreto, when his car was hit by a tram at the crossing of Kidderpore Road and Casuarina Avenue in Calcutta today. Barreto remained unhurt but his car was badly damaged, which he had driven at the time of the accident. Two days ahead of the next derby against East Bengal, there was major tension and fear at the Bagan camp that they might lose their best player.

Note-1: Might Tollygunge Agragami have to look for a new coach?
Tollygunge's controvercial coach Subrata Bhattacharya has suddenly going on "medical leave", which as he has written in a
letter to the club management he has been adviced by his doctor. Adding to that if Tollygunge wanted to keep him as coach, he
could be back after a month. The Tollygunge management are surprised and until a decision is taken have appointed goalkeeping
coach Biswajit Das as temporary coach.
Note-2: Rana Goswami, president of the Jorhat District Sports Association informed the press today that the
44th APTA Trophy would be held with 12 teams from September 6 in Jorhat, Assam with the final slated for September 20.
Though the tea industry is running through a bad patch the Assam Tea Planters Association would continue as title
sponsors of the tournament.
