Note-1: Today the Asian Football Confederation asked for an independent probe into the IFA-Shield final violence involving East Bengal and Palmeiras(Brazil). IFA joint secretary Ranjit Gupta later said it was alright and was sure the IFA would in no way be harmed. He said he was "welcoming the decision and would co-operate with the committee which the AFC expects to comprise three, including a retired judge. The AFC directive says that it was necessary to look into why the huge fracas did erupt and how the scheduling was done. This was an issue raised by team managers on the eve of the October 7 final. The IFA decided to award the Shield to East Bengal after Palmeiras players launched into an attack and the police and East Bengal players moved in. Reacting to AFC secretary Peter Velappan's comment that the AFC was "extremely disappointed" with the violence that erupted "tarnishing the image of the Shield, Indian and Asian football", Gupta said: "Let them investigate. I am confident that the IFA cannot be blamed the least for the incident." The AIFF later said it will take a decision on the committee after "detailed discussions".

Note-1: Will the SAFF Cup 2002 be held at the end of this month? A very big question mark hangs above South Asia's biggest football tournament. The AIFF is in constant contact with their Bangladeshi counterparts from the BFF and the Asian governing body, AFC but the signs are of postponement. If that happens the National League might not end next week but might continue until January 30, until Round 11, to end the first phase. The AIFF already has asked concerned state associations if grounds are available or not. If the National League is extended, a big question mark hangs around the squeezed in Rovers Cup and Durand Cup. One could be held but what with the other one? Well questions over questions and the AIFF, in person Alberto Colaco, will have to answer them in the coming days...
