FC Kochin won their first match of this National League with a 2-0 victory against Punjab Police, who lost their fifth match in a row, at the Nehru Stadium, Kochi. The goals were scored by Sushanth Mathew and VP Shaji on eather side of the lemon break.

6th National League - Mumbai: Mahindra United 0-0 Salgaocar SC - Goals: none.
Mahindra United and Salgaocar SC played out a dull goalless draw in the National League at the Cooperage Ground, Mumbai. Both sides had their chances but for a match from which a lot was expected it was a quiet encounter on New Years eve.

ITI held their more fancied rivals Mohun Bagan to a goalless draw in a National League match at the Bangalore Football Stadium. ITI could even won today had their strikers not messed up the chances while Bagan seemed unsure after their loss against HAl over the weekend.

Note-1: The AIFF today held its Annual General Meeting in New Delhi. A lot of important decisions were taken after an eventful year 2001.
INDIA and East Bengal midfielder Jo Paul Ancheri has been named as "Player of the Year 2001", while O. Bem Bem of Manipur has been named the first-ever "Women's Player of the Year". AIFF secretary Alberto Colaco said both Ancheri and Bem Bem will be given cash prizes of Rs 15,000 each. Mr Colaco said the AIFF also praised the performance of the first female FIFA referee from India, Bentla D'Couth.
Mr. Colaco further informed the press on a number of things surrounding the national team. He said that at the moment it was not clear if the SAFF Cup will be held or not next month in Dhaka, due to change in the leadership in the Bangladesh Football Federation. Also India has been invited to a four-nation tournament in South Africa in April-May 2002. Also India has plans to organise an own four-nation tournament.
The most important decision taken in Delhi was the status and transfer of players in India as per FIFA rules. The regulations will come into force in the season 2002/03. The new rules will seperate amateurs from professionals. Teams engaging a professional will henceforth be required to have a written contract with the concerned player, which will be at least of a year and maximum of three years duration. The player will have to undergo fitness and medical tests before finalising the contract. Also there will be regulations on players provided on loan. Under the new system the player will have to be taken on loan for the whole season and cannot be released after a short period. The rule says that a club cannot keep a player if he is not fielded for matches. Also a club cannot deny salary to a player by not playing him on grounds of injury. Also there will be a new rule on state representation, which will see players returning to their states to compete in the Santosh Trophy. The new rule will take into account the registration of a player at the age of 17. The AIFF is also set to introduce a player's passport which will record the career of a player from the age of 12 until his retirement.

Vasco SC held fancied Churchill Brothers to a 1-1 draw in a Goa derby in a National League match at the Nehru Stadium, Goa. Churchill Brothers took the lead in the 37.minute through a goal by Ghanian striker Yakubu Yusif and after that Vasco went into attack to equalise but only late in the match did the attacks bear fruits. Brazilian striker Riu Wanderley Weis scored the equaliser in injury time to make the Vasco fans happy.

FC Kochin remained winless in the National League after their 0-2 defeat at the hands of ITI, Bangalore at the Nehru Stadium, Kochi. The hero of the day for the Telephonemen was Nigerian striker Kenneth Onu, who scored both goals in quick succession in the second half. The win for ITI was even more memorable, as it was their first win of this National League and just a few days ago Krishnaji Rao had replaced Mohammed Habib as coach.

6th National League - Goa: Salgaocar SC 2-0 Punjab Police - Goals: 1:0 Eugene Gray (44'), 2:0 Bruno Coutinho (71').
Salgaocar SC returned to winning ways in the National League with a 2-0 victory against promoted Punjab Police in the Nehru Stadium, Goa. Salgaocar scored on either side of the lemon break, through Liberian Eugene Gray in the 44.minute and substitute Bruno Coutinho in the 71.minute. For Punjab Police it was the fourth loss in their fourth match and it is already a fight for survival for them.

Newly promoted HAL created one of the biggest ever upsets in the history of the National League by beating Calcutta giants Mohun Bagan 3-1 at the Bangalore Football Stadium. HAL went into the lead through a Rajendra Prasad header of a cross from Sunil Kumar in the 20.minute. HAL consolidated its lead after a corner from Gregory Clark in the 29.minute, when Bagan keeper Rajat Ghosh Dastidar fumbled the ball and Kyrgystan striker Raja Baliev Nurlan headed the ball in. Bagan reduced the deficit through Brazilian star Jose Barreto in the 35.minute through a header after Seriki had played the ball onto the crossbar. In the reminder of the match Mohun Bagan tried hard to get the equaliser but that was not to be and then in injury time Nurlan scored his second and HAL's third to seal the victory.

East Bengal returned to winning ways in the National League with a 2-1 victory against JCT Mills at the Saltlake Stadium, Calcutta. JCT took the lead through a long-ranger from Hardip Singh Saini in the 17.minute, which East Bengal's Nigerian striker Omolaja Olalekan equalised six minutes later. East Bengal went ahead through a header from substitute Dipendu Biswas in the 68.minute but they could have won by a bigger margin had the strikers scored of their chances.

Mahindra United were lucky to walk away as 2-1 winners in their National League match against Tollygunge Agragami at the Cooperage Ground, as Khalid Jamil scored the winner in stopage time. Tollygunge went ahead through their lone striker Akeem Abul Alem in the 20.minute, their only chance in the first half and Mahindra needed until the 54.minute to equalise through striker Mohammed Najeeb. After the equaliser Mahindra had numerous chances to settle the match in their favour but when it did happen it was rather as surprise as it came so late in the match. Tollygunge goalie Sandip Nandy had a great day under the bar and he was well supported by his defence but due to the defensive strategy Tollygunge had to settle for the defeat.

Note-1: The AIFF has selected 37 probables for a national camp in preparation for the SAF-Games and the Pusan Asian Games 2002. The camp was originally scheduled to commence at the NIS - Patiala from December 22 but was postponed and now will be held from December 28 to January 15 at the same venue.

Churchill Brothers lost their points of the National League with a 1-1 draw against ITI at the Nehru Stadium, Goa. Churchill Bros controlled the proceedings in the first half but were unable to score. That changed in the third minute of the second half as Churchill Bros captain Roque Barreto scored with a right footer but the lead didn't last long as ITIs Nigerian striker Kenneth Onu equalised just three minutes later. After the equaliser both teams tried to score the winner but weren't able to.

Mahindra United held defending champions East Bengal to a 1-1 draw in a National League match at the Cooperage Ground, Mumbai. In a match which Mahindra should have won, the jeepmen opened the scoring in the 14.minute through new Nigerian defender Musa Isa Eroje. After that Mahindra controlled the match but didn't score of its chances. After Eroje, a superb new acquisition for Mahindra's, was substituted due to injury East Bengal's forwardline woke up and scored the equaliser in the 80.minute through Omolaja Olalekan. This saved the day for East Bengal.

Vasco SC earned their first win in this seasons National League with a late winner by Brazilian striker Rui Wanderley Weis to be able to beat new entrants Punjab Police 2-1 at the Nehru Stadium, Goa. Vasco opened the scoring through Satish Minz in the 16.minute, which Praveen Kumar equalised in the 41.minute, while Weis scored the winner in the 84.minute.

The best chance came of Nigerian striker Akeem in the 68.minute, when his header hit the crossbar.

The preliminary league begins on December 24, will be completed before the Durand Cup, while the Super League would re-start after the Durand final on February 16. Note-1: Bengal Mumbai FC might be in for a change in the position of coaching. Jamshed Nassiri, the former Iranian star of the Calcutta Maidan is likely to end his association with BMFC after four years, in which the club has been unable to get the self set target of getting promoted into the National League.
Former India and Mahindras coach Dereck D'Souza as been appointed as technical director but he will not become coach due to lack of time. Likely replacements of Nassiri are either Calcutta Port Trust coach Johar Das or former India goalkeeper Bandya Kadke but so far Nassir has not been fired by BMFC nor has he stepped down.

Note-2: The controversy over the age of some members of Goa team has marred the Junior National Football Championship in Jaipur. Interestingly, the reply from the chief co-ordinator of the championship, Hardev Jadeja, has done little to solve the matter. In fact, it has added further to the controversy .Delhi had filed a complaint on Tuesday, soon after their match against Goa, saying several Goa players are over aged. In fact, the decision of disciplinary committee has raised the issue whether the AIFF has two sets of norms - one for the states belonging to powerful officials of AIFF and the other for the smaller units. The organising committee has asked Goa to provide original birth certificates of its players by December 23.

6th National League - Bangalore: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited 2-1 Salgaocar SC - Goals: 1:0,2:1 Raja Baliev Nurlan (60',77'), 1:1 Dennis Cabral (66'). Two goals by Kyrgystan import Raja Baliev Nurlan helped debutants Hindustan Aeronautics Limited beat former champions Salgaocar 2-1 at the Bangalore Football Stadium. In a match which could have gone either way, HAL keeper Gumpe Rime saved a penalty from Dharamjit Singh by diving to his left at the stroke of halftime. HAL went ahead through Nurlan in the 60.minute, Dennis Cabral equalised just six minutes later but the decider was left again to Nurlan, who made it a successful NFL home debut for HAL.

6th National League - Kochin: FC Kochin 1-1 JCT Mills - Goals: 0:1 Hardip Singh Sangha (17'), 1:1 VP Shaji (53').
In a National League match FC Kochin played a 1-1 draw against JCT Mills at the Nehru Stadium, Kochin. JCT went ahead through a freekick from Hardip Singh Sangha in the 17.minute, while VP Shaji equalised for Kochin in the 53.minute.

Note-1: The Indian Olympic Association has once again left out football from the 25 preferred disciplines list for the 2002 Asian Games to be held in Pusan, South Korea which was released by Minister of Sports, Ms. Uma Bharti.
It is scandalous in my opinion that the IOA and the sports ministry have left out football from the, as they call it, preferred disciplines list. The list contains numerous sports which if football is left out, should also not feature in the list. & what is the criteria of this assessment???

17. December
6th National League - Mumbai: Mahindra United 2-0 Vasco SC - Goals: 1:0 Austin Akolo (10'), 2:0 Bala Usman (54').
Mahindra United had reasons to smile despite a hard-earned, almost scrappy 2-0 victory over Vasco SC in a National League match at the Cooperage. Besides the three points, the other positive aspect was the successful debut performance of the three new Nigerians - Austin Akolo, Bala Usman and Musa Eroje. The strikers Austin Akolo in the first half and Bala Usman in the second half got on the score sheet, while Musa Eroje played a stellar role in defence. With these incusions Mahindra has become an even bigger threat for the other teams in the National League.

6th National League - Bangalore: Indian Telephone Industries 1-1 Tollygunge Agragami - Goals: 1:0 CK Jiteesh (43'), 1:1 Pralad Singh Rawat (90').
In a National League match at the Bangalore Football Stadium Indian Telephone Industries played out a 1-1 draw against Tollygunge Agragami. Wingback CK Jiteesh opened the scoring for ITI in the 43.minute through a fierce left-footer, while substitute Pralad Singh Rawat slammed in the equalised for Tollygunge Agragami in the dying moments of the match.

6th National League - Calcutta: East Bengal Club 0-1 Mohun Bagan AC - Goal: 0:1 Jose Barreto (26').
The brilliance of Brazilian Jose Barreto, the highest paid footballer in India at the moment and superstar at Mohun Bagan was the difference in an otherwise mediocre Calcutta derby. Jose Barreto scored the goal of the day in the 26.minute after a deflection from Nigerian Abdullatif Seriki. A worry for the Indian national team ahead of the SAFF Cup next month was the injury to Deepak Mondal, which will keep him out for three weeks. His replacement Ranjan Dey also didn't last the match as he received marching orders only 13 minutes after coming on.

Punjab Police was again comprehensively beaten by superior opposition in the National League. This time Churchill Brothers won 3-0 at the Guru Gobind Stadium, Jalandhar with Gurinder Pal Singh being the main culprit as he caused two penalties for the Goans through handball. Churchill Brothers took some time to settle down and then opened the scoring in the 24.minute through Ghanian striker Abdul Ganiyu Saley. This lead was increased in the second half through Noel Wilson and Somatai Shaiza of the two penalties caused by Gurinder Pal Singh.

Note-1: Referee Debak Guha passed away at a Calcutta hospital. He was 38. Guha, a bachelor, succumbed to severe burn injuries received on the night of December 4. A stove burst while he was cooking at a get-together near his home at Baranagar. A national panel referee for the last four years, Guha officiated in the under-19 nationals. He also did duty in two Mohun Bagan vs East Bengal matches. Out of action the whole of this year following an operation on his right heel, Guha was gearing up to return with the whistle.

Title aspirants Mohun Bagan opened their campaign on a winning note with a 2-0 victory against city rivals Tollygunge Agragami at the Saltlake stadium. The goals were scored in a three minute period early in the second-half by Abdullatif Seriki and James Singh after Mohun Bagan's star Brazilian Jose Barreto had done the spadework.

Churchill Brothers started their National League campaign on a positive note with a 2-1 victory against JCT Mills at the Guru Nanak Stadium, Ludhiana. The Churchill Bros opened the scoring through a free-kick from Ghanian defender Osumanu Husseini in the 41.minute but JCT Mills equalised through a long-ranger from Hardip Gill in the 55.minute. The decider was scored by Francis Coelho in the 75.minute after a corner.

6th National League - Bangalore: Indian Telephone Industries 0-0 Mahindra United - Goals: none.
ITI held one of the National League title favourites Mahindra United to a goalless draw in their opening match at the Bangalore Football Stadium. The incident which led to the sending off of ITI's Zaheer Abbas and Mir Farooq Hyder was the most interesting one for the spectators, not speeking for the standard of the game.

6th National League - Goa: Vasco SC 1-1 Hindustan Aeronautics Limited - Goals: 1:0 Peter Rodrigues (25'), 1:1 Sunil Kumar (36').
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited started their first-ever campaign in the National League on a positive note with a 1-1 draw away against Vasco SC at the Nehru Stadium, Fatorda. Vasco took the lead in the 25.minute through striker Peter Rodrigues but HAl equalised in the 36.minute through Sunil Kumar and held the upper hand in the second half and could have even won the match.

6th National League - Jalandhar: Punjab Police 1-3 East Bengal Club - Goals: 1:0 Praveen Kumar (2'), 1:1,1:2 Suley Musah (20',69'), 1:3 IM Vijayan (89').
Defending champions started their National League campaign in style, after an early shock goal by new entrants Punjab Police at the Guru Gobid Stadium, Jalandhar. Punjab Police took an early lead through Praveen Kumar's goal in the 2.minute. But after that is was East Bengal all the way, as the champions asserted their supremacy. Two goals from Ghanian defender Suley Musah and a late consolidation goal from India star IM Vijayan was all they needed.

6th National League - Goa: Salgaocar SC 1-0 FC Kochin - Goal: 1:0 Glador Zaire (47').
Salgaocar, who had lost both their matches against Kochin in last seasons National League, opened their account on a high note with a convincing 1-0 victory against Kochin at the Nehru Stadium, Margao. The goal of the day was scored by new Liberian striker Gladon Zaire in the 47.minute.

Note-1: Strata Sports Marketing, a London-based sports management group, have been appointed the marketing agents of the AIFF for all domestic tournaments but mainly for the National League. The AIFF president PR DasMunshi and Strata managing director Alamgir Kashmiri disclosed this today at a press conference in Delhi. Among other things, Strata would be paying a guarantee amount of Rs. 220 million in the next five years. The deal also makes sure that Strata would stand guarantee not only for the financially lucrative National League, but also for the 2.division NFL, Federation Cup, Santosh Trophy and the three age-group National championships.

Note-1: The world football governing body FIFA will be granting $ 400.000 for the construction of a full fledged "Football House" as the headquarters of the AIFF at Dwarka in the Capital, New Delhi. This was announced by V Manilal Fernando, the Asian Football Confederation vice-president and the FIFA Goal Project Development Officer at a press conference in the presence of the AIFF president Priyan Ranjan Dasmunshi and secretary Albert Colaco in Delhi.
The grant is part of the FIFA "Goal Project", which would be in addition to the annual sanction of $ 250.000 being given to the AIFF. The yearly sanction will be utilised for the development of a training centre and hostel, adjacent to the Karnataka Football Association Stadium in Ashok Nagar, Bangalore.
Fernando had been inspecting sites in Delhi and Bangalore for the project. Meanwhile, Das Munshi informed that plans for a National Football Academy in Delhi are afoot.

Note-1: A sad story from England:
The English football league on Wednesday apologised to Gurnam Singh, an Asian referee, after it was found guilty of racially discriminating against him and preventing him from being promoted to Premier League matches.
In an 80-page written judgment, an employment tribunal in Birmingham found that Gurnam Singh had been the victim of racial discrimination and unfair dismissal. His lawyer said the football league, the National Review Board, which oversees promotion and demotion of referees, and two officials had been found to have racially discriminated against him, according to media reports. The football league said it would set up an international investigation in the wake of the Birmingham hearing.
Gurnam Singh claimed he was continually overlooked for promotion to the Premiership, despite good assessment marks and a high position in the merit list of officials. Gurnam Singh, whose case was backed by the Commission of Racial Equality also said he had been unfairly dropped from the Football Association register of officials in May 1999 after 22 years in the job.
The league was also found to have unfairly dismissed Gurnam Singh, 47, from Wolverhampton and he is set to win damages from the league after being overlooked for promotion, excluded from important matches and sacked.
A hearing will be held in the next few moths to determine the damages which should be paid to Gurnam Singh, his lawyer said. Gurnam Singh a former non-league player, was one of three non-white referees across the professional leagues.
