The club secretary, Sulaiman Khurshid, said Roy Choudhury had informed him about his decision to resign over telephone but had not given anything in writing yet. Note-1: The 9th SAF Games, to be held in Islamabad from October 6 to 15, have been postponed indefinitely, the Pakistan government announced on Sunday. The decision was taken after a technical committee of delegates recommended that the Games be postponed due to the prevailing security scenario in the region arising out of the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, Pakistan Sports Minister SK Tressler said at a press conference.

22. September
Note-1: Though the Indian Olympic Association has maintained that India would participate in the South Asian Federation Games to be held in Islamabad from October 6 to 16, the Sports Ministry today said a final decision on sending a contingent would be taken only on Monday. The External Affairs Ministry had earlier cleared India's participation in the regional Games but doubts were being raised over the possibility of the Games being held as scheduled due to security concerns in the region following terrorist strikes in the United States. Pakistan has insisted that the Games were on but Sports Minister Uma Bharti today said the new situation had compelled a re-look on India's participation.

Note-2: Indian star skipper Baichung Bhutia left India to rejoin his club Bury FC (England) after recovering from an knee operation. Bhutia welcomed the signing of Leeds United reserve striker Harpal Singh (Indian origin) and hopes it could encourage more Asian youngsters to take up soccer. "With Harpal joining me here at Bury, the inevitable question people will ask is will this encourage more Asian kids here take up football," said Baichung. "The Asian community makes up something like six percent of the population here so it's difficult to know why there aren't more Asian footballers around. Obviously I didn't grow up in England, unlike Harpal who was born in Bradford, but I gather previous generations weren't really supported in football. "Racism is talked about as a factor behind that, but I've never heard anything aimed at me. I've never experienced anything like that since I've been in England. "The main problem is that previously, Asian families were more interested in education than sport. Now that's changing. From our generation onwards, families support kids wanting to become footballers a lot more and I see things developing for the better. "From my point of view, hopefully the kids back home can get confidence from what I have done and come over to places like England to play for themselves." The Indian added: "I hope my decision to come to England will give young kids playing football in my home country the encouragement and confidence they need to perform well and succeed in the long term. I can't speak for Harpal, but I would like to think I'm helping the situation."
The signing of Harpal Singh could be a great chance for India. If Singh gets used to play with Bhutia, he could get interested in playing for the Indian national team... Let's see, how this partnership develops.

Note-2: India will participate in the upcoming SAF Games in Islamabad, Pakistan. This was announced by Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi. Several federations in India were concerned about the political situation after the New York terror attacks (AIFF included). "The games are on. And we will participate," Kalmadi said. "The Pakistan Olympic Association has informed us (IOA) that the games would go ahead as scheduled from October 6 to 16." "The government has already cleared India's participation and there should not be any doubts over that," he said. The IOA chief said the athletes were going on with their preparations and the training camps for various disciplines were also functioning as scheduled.

Note-3: Tomorrows Calcutta Super Division tie between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal has been postponed due a pop concert of the pop group Vengaboys. Note-2: Indian captain Baichung Bhutia has scotched rumours that his injury is career threatening. In an interview to Transworld International for Doordarshan, Bhutia said that he hoped to be back to action in three weeks' time. The key striker for 2.division English side Bury FC has been forced to sit out after he tore his knee cartilage against Queens Parks Rangers last month. The Sikkim lad had to undergo surgery and the doctors advised him complete rest. The mercurial striker expressed his concern on the indefinite postponement of the Afro-Asian Games, "The Afro-Asian Games would have helped Indian footballers gain a lot from tough opponents like Nigeria who have already booked their ticket to next year's World Cup," Bhutia said. Baichung now in his third year with Bury, will be back in England later today. He is desperately hoping for a quick recovery, which would enable him bail out his struggling side, which is currently at the bottom of the table just above Northamption Bury and was so far won one match and lost seven.

Note-1: Indian Premier Football Association president Vijay Mallya critisised the AIFF it lacked any 'strategy' for bettering standards of the game and threatened "drastic measures" if the situation did not look up in the next edition of the national league. Mallya, chairman of the UB group which sponsors the top clubs East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, also sharply criticised AIFF for its 'inability' to rope in sponsors and 'failure' in organising tv coverage of the game. "If things continue the way they are now, I don't see any great future of football in our country. The clubs will be there, but sponsors will keep themselves away," Mallya told at a press conference in Calcutta. The UB chief also complained that AIFF also failed to empathise with the clubs' predicament when top footballers were suddenly called to national coaching camps. "Of course, national interest should be supreme. But if professionals for whom we pay exorbitant amounts are picked for camps suddenly then all our plans go haywire," he said. Suggesting that national camps be organised as per a pre-decided schedule, Mallya said IPFA had submitted a set of suggestions to AIFF improving the organisation of the National Football League. "The coming sixth NFL will be a test. If things do not improve, we will be forced to take drastic measures," he said.

Note-2: "The Times of India" reports: AIFF general secretary Alberto Colaco is still in the dark about the future of SAF Games, scheduled to be held in Islamabad from October 6 to 15. The Indian footballers are preparing for the Games in Patiala since September 9. But the recent terrorist attack in America has put a big question mark on the possibility of hosting the games on schedule. "We are continuously in touch with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) but they have not yet expressed anything concrete about not participating," Colaco said. Several sporting events all over the world like Ryder Cup, world wrestling championship, Afro-Asian Games have already been postponed as the fallout of the attack on America. "We don't know anything what is going on about SAF Games. Neither the IOA or the government are revealing anything about the future of the games. Right now the Patiala camp is going on without any purpose," said Colaco. Under current political situation, which is volatile to say the least, there is very little possibility that Pakistan will be able to hold the Games on schedule. With the talks falling through between Afghanistan's Taliban government and Pakistan, the threat of American attack on the former increases. And if that happens, the situation will be tense in neighbouring Pakistan. "However, we can't disband the camp until IOA informs us officially about the postponement of the Games," Colaco explained. "But we have decided to cancel the exposure trip to Qatar," Colaco informed. The AIFF was planing to send the Indian squad to Qatar to play some preparatory matches. Meanwhile, East Bengal and Mohun Bagan are eagerly waiting to know whether the camp is going to be disbanded or not. As both the clubs have quite a few players from their roster in the national camp and the Super Division League reaching the home stretch, they would love to get back their players back. The officials of both clubs contacted Colaco as well as the players in the Patiala camp, but failed to receive any information. It is another classic case where the clubs are getting a raw deal because the government can't decide whether to play in the SAF Games. The camp in Patiala is now a sheer waste of time, money and energy of the AIFF and the players as the clubs struggle in the crucial domestic tournaments.

Note-3: Mohun Bagan's Brazilian star Jose Ramirez Barreto is to ask the club for some time off following his demanding schedule over the past two years. Barreto has had very little time off over the past two years because of Mohun Bagan's domestic commitments. Now, Barreto is planning to ask the club's secretary, Anjan Mitra, if he can select which close-season tournaments he plays in. Mohun Bagan, who are nearing the completion of the Calcutta Super Division, are due to play in a host of pre-season tournaments, before the start of the National League on December 1. Barreto said: "Immediately after the League finishes on September 25, the IFA Shield will start on the next day. And then the team has planned to participate in a few second grade tournaments. If it is like the previous years I will be very tired." Barreto added that he has had to play in nine consecutive tournaments in the last 10 months. He said: "I was extremely tired both physically and mentally." Barreto concluded: "A few tournaments like The Sikkim Governors Gold Cup, Bordoloi Trophy, and Bandodkar Cup are all second grade tournaments. I do not see the point in playing there."

Note-2: The Calcutta Referees Association are poised to go on strike after Mogun Bagan's coach Subrata Bhattacharya slammed them. The CRA, who were left bitter after Bhattacharya's allegation that the referees should be beaten for their poor performances, are planning to go on strike after September 18. The CRA will have a disciplinary committee meeting on the day and are set to take an unprecedented decision and strike for the first time in the history of CRA. Although efforts are already being made by the Indian Football Association to convince the CRA secretary to change their decision, it is unlikely that their plea will be answered. Bhattacharya commented after his side's defeat to Tollygunge Agragami that the poor performance of referee C.R. Majumder was the main reason why they lost the vital game. He said: "We should have had a spot kick when one of their defenders handled the ball on the goal-line to save his side from a certain goal for Barreto. And this referee should have been beaten for his awful performance." Bhattacharya also alleged that a select number of the Calcutta referees take money from other club officials to make sure that results go a certain way, and needless to say, the referees are fuming with The Bagan coach's comments.

Note-3: Report from "The Hindustan Times": India may be one of the founding members and biggest partners of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), but it will go unrepresented in two of Asia's most prestigious soccer tournaments this season - Asian Club championships and Asian Cup Winners' Cup. Both tournaments, to be played over a period of five months, have begun early this month. While clubs from smaller countries like Muktijoddha Sansad of Bangladesh and Sanders of Sri Lanka are there to fight it out with the best in the continent, no Indian club has been drawn into the fixtures at the behest of the AIFF. In India, the National Football League champions of the previous season qualify for the Asian Club championship and the slot in the Cup Winners' Cup goes to the Federation Cup champions. Indian clubs have twice earlier reached the final rounds of Club championship when it was played on a different format. While East Bengal made the final rounds in Jeddah in 1985, Mohun Bagan qualified three years later in China. AIFF secretary Alberto Colaco when contacted said, "The federation had taken an executive committee decision earlier this year not to send any Indian team for these two tournaments." According to Colaco, lack of seriousness on the part of the selected clubs and financial constraints are the prime reasons behind this decision. "It has happened before that the NFL champions (JCT) had refused to play in the Club championship forcing the federation to send the runners-up team (Churchill Brothers) at the last moment," Colaco said. "The format of the tournament being such where teams play on home and away basis, the clubs not only met with disastrous results, but suffered considerable financial losses.
"Moreover, for three years between 1998 and 2001 the Federation Cup was not played. So there was no claimant for the Cup Winners' Cup spot anyway," he added. The AIFF secretary said that the federation has decided to give the qualified teams some monetary assistance for playing these tournaments from next season. "Something would certainly be done to send the teams next year onwards," Colaco assured. While the federation's decision not to send teams for top Asian meets does not speak very highly of its policies, it also exposes the 'frog in the well' mentality of the Indian club teams. Mohun Bagan, who have of late acquired a habit of complaining whenever their players have been called to play for the national team, have not made any claim to play in the Asian Club championship on the virtue of being NFL champions in the 1999-2000 season. It may be recalled that the Calcutta club earned the wrath of AFC two seasons back when they conceded their home match against Jubilo Iwata of Japan on some flimsy pretext. AFC had then imposed fine and suspension on Mohun Bagan. With the Afro-Asian Games virtually cancelled and SAF Games in Islamabad awaiting similar fate, exposure starved Indian football is likely to be stuck in the domestic rut for the next five months till the SAFF tournament in Dhaka from January 26. It would not do any good to Indian soccer but would certainly please the club officials - for them, winning local trophies is the only satisfaction.

Highly-placed sources had, earlier on Thursday, said the November 3-11 Games were postponed indefinitely in the wake of terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, and fresh dates would be announced once the situation becomes clear.

Note 3: FC Kochin has signed Liberian international J. B. Seton. The 22-year-old Seton is said to be one of the biggest talents to emerge from Liberia in recent times. Popularly known as `African Dust' back home, Seton was the top scorer in the Liberian league, with 14 goals. Though his team, the Invincible XI finished third, behind Mighty Barolle and LPRC Oilers in a close race, Seton was named the league's `most valuable player'. Former "World Footballer of the Year" George Weah :"He is the next sensation to watch out for. A player of class, Seton is a perfect dribbler, playmaker, scorer and speedster." Seton had offers German Bundesliga side Borussia Moenchengladbach. But Seton felt that the Indian offer was better: "Also, I have friends here, like Sunday Seah. And we are like brothers." Furthermore he said: "And this Indian trip is just for one season. I'll soon be going to Germany," said Seton.

Note-1: The Indian Football Association's bid to include Brazilian giants Palmeiras in the forthcoming IFA Shield now depends on a verbal promise from the sports ministry. The IFA needs around $30,000 to pay for Palmeiras' 15-day stay in Calcutta. They have already sent a 22-player team list, including three Brazilian Under-21 stars. The IFA - which has decided to offer $15,000 in prize money to the champions - had asked the state sports ministry if it could provide some financial assistance, mainly for Palmeiras' participation. And it is understood that state sports minister Subhash Chakrabarty has promised IFA joint-secretary Ranjit Gupta financial help to secure the Brazilian team's participation in the Shield.

Note-1: Mohun Bagan are set to sign on loan 24-year-old Nigerian striker Ezeh Colly Barnes when he arrives in the city on September 20. Burns played for Australian club Sydney Parmatta last year and scored 16 goals in 21 Premier League matches. A Bagan secretary said that as the club has to release players for national camps ahead of the forthcoming Afro-Asian Games and SAF Games, they have decided to sign Burns as cover for those players missing. And the AIFF has given the green light for the loan system to be implemented for all clubs this season.

Note-2: Syed Nayeemuddin, India's under-23 coach, has lambasted the country's club sides for not releasing their top players for international duty. Nayeemuddin's was angered by the decision of one of Indian footballs top clubs, Tollygunge Agragami, to prevent midfielder Sasthi Duley and defender Partha Sarathi Dey from joining-up with the squad for the SAF games, which start on October 5. Agragami are believed to have sent documentation to the AIFF that prove the players are over 23-years-old. To further add to Nayeemuddin's problems, East Bengal have yet to release their selected internationals. East Bengal have said that they will not send Chandan Das and Dipendu Biswas to the training camp until after their local derby with Mohun Bagan on September 15 at the Salt Lake stadium. Nayeemuddin has now asked the Federation to punish any club who do not release their players within the next five days.

Note-1: The 107th IFA Shield will be held from September 22 to October 6 in Kolkata. All the matches are scheduled to be staged at the Salt Lake Stadium. Out of 12 teams due to participate, 11 have confirmed their place in the tournament. The Federation is trying to recruit one team from either Latin America or from a South Asian country.
The remaining 11 teams are: East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, Mohammedan Sporting, CSL Bhratri Sangha, Tollygunge Agragami, qualifier champions Ever-Ready, Mahindra United, FC Kochin, national Under-19 squad and two Bangladeshi premier teams (Mukti Joddha FC and Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting).
The champion will receive $15,000 while the runner-up will be paid $12,000. Sponsor ESPN is planning to televise match capsules, while arrangements are also being put into place to show the matches live via Doordarshan.

Note-2: CSL Bhratri Sangha are taking stern steps against Abdul Khalique for having allegedly taking a bribe before Monday's Tollygunge Agragami clash. According to CSL directors, former Mohun Bagan forward Khalique has been alleged of having taken money from his old club to receive a caution intentionally during the match against Tollygunge Agragami so that he could not participate in his next crucial Calcutta Super Division match against Bagan on September 10 at the Salt Lake Stadium. According to a CSL director, immediately after the match was over, he received a phone call from a Mohun Bagan representative, informing him that Khalique had already taken some money before the match in order to miss the game with his ex-employers. "And then I became sure that the caution he received following his dissent with the referee, was totally intentional," said the CSL official, preferring to remain anonymous. Khalique will have to sit out for one match for having received yellow card. The club is however planning to call Khalique in its board meeting. And a threatening letter will also be issued to him for him accepting the alleged bribe. If the former national striker fails to satisfy the directors in his reply, then he may face either a big fine or even a suspension for the next few matches in the Super Five phase.
