Note-1: Indian Football is heading to a take a great step: In a revolutionary effort to usher in professionalism in Indian soccer, the AIFF is set to change the regulations governing the status of players in the country. If the rules get the approval, then each registered footballer in the country will be labelled either a professional or an amateur. The decision will be taken during the executive committee meeting in Chennai on Thursday.
While making it clear that the AIFF registered players will either be amateurs or non-amateurs, the rule also makes it mandatory for all the professional players to enter into a written contract with their respective clubs for a pre-determined period, a copy of which should be provided to the AIFF and the state unit. For the amateur players and the clubs, the rule proposes that the club would be entitled for Rs. 1,500 each for the number of years the player played for it (up to maximum three years) once he joins another club. But the fee would go up to Rs. 7,000 per year if the footballer decides to join a professional club as an amateur. The fee would be increased to 50 per cent of his first year's salary or Rs. 30,000 (whichever is more) if the footballer turns professional.

'Bernard Pereira' Benefit Match: Vasco SC Vs Pax of Nagoa SC

Note-1: Another curious story from Indian football: Mohun Bagan players were clearly unhappy at their sponsors McDowell Company for shooting an advert amidst scorching heat in Chennai on Saturday. The players, wearing McDowell company's shirts, had to act before the camera for around three-and-half hours at the Nehru International Stadium. They even had to play a match between themselves, run with the ball, perform over-head kicks and dribble throughout the shooting, by a private agency. As the company is their major sponsor, the players, despite having been given a rest before their crucial semifinal against fancied Mumbai outfit Mahindra United on Monday, had to stretch themselves and appeared far from happy with their officials, who forced them to participate in the shooting.

Velappan was disappointed with the preparation of the Ambedkar Stadium pitch but was then shocked at the state of the dressing rooms. He also said that the referees room and the galleries should be made more comfortable.

Note-2: The suspension of East Bengal's captain of the last season Bijen Singh has been extended until September 1 and Bijen has also been penalised a month's salary, approximately Rs. 100,000. 14. August
The Federation Cup 2001 starts tomorrow at the Nehru Stadium in Chennai (former Madras) and finishes on August 30 with the cup final.
The Federation Cup, organised by the All-India Football Federation, is the Indian version of the national cup knockout tournament held around the world, e.g. the English FA-Cup.
The Federation Cup is being revived after a gap of three years and the last time the tournament was held, it was played under a different format and had a title sponsor. This time around the 20 best teams from India, the 12 National League sides and the eight best teams from the 2.Division National League, will be vying for honours and will try to win the Rs 2.4 million prize money at stake.
1998 was the year in which the Federation Cup was last held and had Kalyani Black Label, a UB-Group beer, as title sponsor. Over 40 teams took part and it started-off with regional qualifiers in five zonal groups. The qualifiers plus the quarterfinalists of the previous year played in the Pre-Quarterfinals. The final was held between the Calcutta Maidan giants Mohun Bagan and East Bengal infront of a jampacked Saltlake Stadium in Calcutta. Mohun Bagan won the match 2-1 and the title!
The 2001 edition is being held as a knockout tournament at one place and at one stretch but naming the favourite to win the title is very difficult this time around. The Federation Cup is the first major tournament of the Indian football season 2001/02 after the inter-state transfers took place. Some teams have been playing local leagues at home but others like the Goan clubs have had no competitive football at all so far but as always some teams will be named as favourites, like East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, Churchill Brothers, Salgaocar or Mahindra United. A surprise is surely possible...
The Federation Cup 2001 starts with the match Border Security Force from Jalandhar against the Goan-side Dempo SC.

Calcutta Super Division: East Bengal Club 5-0 SAIL
Calcutta Super Division: Tollygunge Agragami 1-0 BNR

Note-1: Jaydeep Basu from the Hindustan Times reports:
Tata Football Academy is likely to host India's first ever under-19 international football tournament in January next year, according to Arun Ghosh, the director of the academy. The five-team tournament, to be named the TFA Cup, has tentatively been slated from January 19 to 30.
Speaking from the TFA office in Jamshedpur, Ghosh said the Tata bosses, keeping in view the fact that the junior footballers in India receive very little exposure as compared to the seniors, have planned the tournament.
"Of course, the present TFA lot are currently practicing in Germany. They also play some domestic tournaments here. But playing international matches always helps one mature fast."
Already approved by top people in the Tata hierarchy, the TFA Cup will be played in the Jamshedpur Stadium, which has a capacity for 40,000 spectators. "Our stadium here has all modern facilities for staging an international meet," Ghosh, a member of the 1962 Asian Games gold medal winning team, said.
The meet has already got the approval of the All India Football Federation, which is negotiating with different foreign teams. Ghosh said that he would be happy if two teams among Japan, South Korea and China confirm participation. "The other team could be from the Middle East." India will be fielding two teams. Apart from the national under-19 side, the academy squad will be entered as India-B.
The five teams will play on a round-robin basis with the top two meeting again in the final. There is no prize money involved, though the organisers will bear all other expenses.
The AIFF secretary, Alberto Colaco said he has already written to Asian countries like China, Japan, Oman, UAE, Iran and Uzbekistan. "Talks with them are still at the preliminary stages, though Oman has already shown interest."
Colaco said that since the tournament is for boys born on and after January 1, 1983, the TFA Cup will offer good opportunity to the Indian team to prepare for next year's Asian Youth qualifiers, the dates of which have not been announced.

Note-2: The president of the Indian Professional Football Association, Vijay Mallya, has dashed off a strong letter of protest to the AIFF for not implementing demands of the major clubs it said it would last December.
Mr Mallya, on Thursday, informed that at a meeting of the IPFA on Wednesday it was decided to serve an ultimatum to the AIFF in this regard. He said if the demands were not met, its member clubs would boycott the next National Football League.
Last year, just before the start of the National League, the AIFF had averted a split after conceding to some demands of the IPFA, which was formed by major clubs like Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, Churchill Brothers, FC Kochin, Salgaocar and Mahindra United. The demands included better allowances, air travel, improved facilities and chalking out a scheme to make the game electronic and print media friendly and attracting dwindling crowds by playing the league matches under floodlights.
The IPFA, at its meeting, also decided not to permit changes in the Federation Cup, scheduled from August 15.
Mr Mallya also informed that the IPFA will set up two football academies in Durgapur, West Bengal and Kochin. He said it will also start organising benefit matches for former India footballers, starting with former national coach Dereyk D'Souza, who is facing financial problems.
