At haltime Tolly protested against FCK's fielding of India striker IM Vijayan as his International Transfer Clearance

5.National League - Calcutta: East Bengal Club 3-0 Vasco SC - Goals: 1:0 Dipankar Roy (40'), 2:0 Omalaja Olalekan
(69'), 3:0 Suley Musah (85').
Saibal Bose reports: It was surprising to see favourites East Bengal starting with a defensive frame of mind. On the
other hand, Vasco appeared bent on attack, increasing numbers up front. However, that was just a deception, which lasted for
about 15 minutes. Once the Africans in East Bengal got going, the going got tough for Vasco. Good defending and excellent
goalkeeping did keep the slate clean till the 40.minute, but that was about as long as the minnows from Goa could resist.
Dipankar Roy's strike in the 40.minute was followed by two more by Omolaja Olalekan and Suley Musah in the second half. The
3-0 victory for East Bengal in their 8th National League game at Yuba Bharati Krirangan today, only proved their dominance.
The far less experienced Vasco did try and even came close to scoring twice - once the upright denied them and then Musah
made a brilliant goalline save - but coach Dereck Pereira will be under no illusions about their opponents' superiority.

Note-1: The Hindustan Times reports from the capital Delhi:
The Delhi Soccer Association executive committee unanimously rejected the resignation of its president Umesh Sood, which
he submitted on Dec 18 last. According to a DSA official, the executive committee, which took up the matter after two months
of dilly-dallying, has also instructed its secretary, Syed Nasir Ali to lead a delegation to Sood in order to try and pursue
him to come back to the fold. Sood's resignation came in the wake of the AIFF elections when the DSA found itself a sharply
divided house with the president and secretary backing two different groups in the federation. Nasir Ali, however, managed to
overrule a previous managing committee decision and stalled Sood from representing DSA in the elections. Sood submitted his
resignation and went public accusing the AIFF president Priyaranjan Dasmunshi for the whole episode. Nasir Ali, in the
meeting, also read out a letter from Dasmunshi, in which the federation chief strongly denied having any hand behind whatever
happened in the DSA.
Meanwhile, the DSA has shelved the plan of holding the first ever women's league in the Capital as they could not muster
enough teams. The Institutional League, Nasir Ali said, would start from Feb 26. The DSA has also written to the AIFF
agreeing to a proposal to host some of the Second Division NFL matches in March.

(30').
Rajeev Kolassari reports that ITI failed to crack the defensive gameplan of Tollygunge Agragami and tumbled to a solitary
goal defeat in the National League in Bangalore. Striker Abdullatif Seriki scored the lone goal in the 30.minute and
Tollygunge protected that lead with great resolve to notch their first win in six matches. For ITI, this was their third
defeat in six matches and a definite setback to their plans in front of their home fans. The match between two teams in the
lower rungs of the NFL table hardly produced exciting football. But it was the result that mattered and Tollygunge came off
the happier side after a win based on a simple, no-nonsense approach.

Note-1: The following report appeared in the Hindustan Times:
The Millennium Cup may not have been a box-office hit but it hasn't prevented football organisers here from grand
projects. In aid of the Gujarat earthquake, Leisure Sports Management wants to bring a full-strength Tottenham Hotspurs to
India for two matches. Mohun Bagan are keen on picking up the tab which would be between Rs 20 to 25 million. The Spurs
visit, if it materialises, will be between May 21 to 31, LSM managing director SS Das Gupta said. "One of the matches would
certainly be in Kolkata but the other venue is yet to be decided," he said. New Delhi could be a frontrunner because Das
Gupta said he would want the Prime Minister to be present. LSM want NFL champions Mohun Bagan to play one of the matches. "We
haven't decided who the other team would be," he added. If Bagan goes ahead with the offer, the trip, according to Das Gupta,
is almost certainly on.
If the tour materializes, a great feast for football fans in India, as Tottenham have stars like Sol Campbell, Darren
Anderson, Sergei Rebrov or Stephan Iverson

In Goa the National Football League Committee meet on February 6, while yesterday the AIFF Executive Committee had a
meeting to decide what will be the course of action in the coming months.
JCT Mills coach, Sukhwinder Singh, expectedly, has been appointed chief coach for the pre-World Cup matches in April/May
to be played on a home-and-away basis. Meanwhile Uzbek coach Islam Akhmedov has been reappointed the chief coach of the
national under-16 and under-19 teams. Akhmedov's contract ending in March has been renewed by a year! Akhmedov has been
demoted but has been given the tough job of organising the Indian junior set-up!
In a surprise move Bangalore has been chosen as the venue for all three home matches to be played by India in the Asian
Zone first round qualifiers for the 2002 World Cup. Drawn in Group 8, India is scheduled to meet United Arab Emirates on
April 8, Yemen on April 15 and Brunei Darussalam on May 20.
With many companies having shown interest in marketing the AIFF property, it was also decided to advertise and invite
offers before awarding the marketing rights of the AIFF to any individual or company. A sub-committee headed by the AIFF
president, Priyaranjan Das Munshi, would examine the bids before taking a final decision.
Decisions were also taken on the format of the National League, the second division NFL, the Federation Cup and junior
nationals.
Though the dates of the pre-World Cup matches clash with the ongoing National League, it was decided not the interrupt
the NFL which is now scheduled to be completed by the end of April. However, since most of the clubs will be affected as some
of their players will be included in the Indian team, the clubs will be allowed to take players from the same State or other
States on loan till the conclusion of the NFL. It was also decided to allow clubs to replace a foreign player whose contract
has expired with another foreign player. The AIFF will provide a subsidy of Rs. 200,000 to those affected clubs in this
regard, for the replacement of a foreign player. The transfer dates for the next season will be prolonged to May 31. The
meeting also decided against disturbing the present format of the NFL, thus overlooking a proposal to run the same at two
specific venues; one featuring the top six teams and the other including the rest of the six teams at the end of the first
phase.
The zonal qualifiers for this year's second division National League will start from the first week of March. Besides
Dempo SC and Border Security Force, which were relegated from the last year's NFL, all State Associations will be allowed to
nominate one team each. So far, only 20 States have nominated their teams and the venues for the four zonals will be decided
shortly after knowing the composition of the participating teams. Delhi is one of the candidates as venue.
Having drawn criticism from various quarters for its failure to conduct the Federation Cup through the last two years,
the executive meeting approved on a new format for the tournament. Accordingly, the tournament would now be open only to the
top eight teams from the Premier and second division National League's, making the Federation Cup a 16-team knock-out event!
The Junior, Sub-junior and Under-21 national tournaments will be held in April-May. The Junior nationals will be held in
Kerala, the sub-junior in Haryana or Tamil Nadu, while the final rounds of under-21 in Assam.
The AIFF also decided to donate the gate collection of four National League matches to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund
for the Gujarat earthquake victims! The IPFA president Vijay Mallya, who is also the vice-president of the AIFF, announced
that his company would be sponsoring these four matches by donating Rs 5,000,000.
The AIFF also plans to approach FIFA to organise matches with foreign teams in India to raise funds for quake victims.
Mallya, chairman, UB Group, has also offered to sponsor any foreign team that may be willing to come to India to play
exhibition matches to raise fund for the quake victims.
The four matches are: Churchill vs Salgaocar (Feb 11, Goa), East Bengal vs Mohun Bagan (Feb 17, Kolkata), State Bank of
Travancore vs FC Kochin (Feb 20, Thiruvananthapuram), Mahindra United vs Air India (Mumbai).

5.National League - Calcutta: Mohun Bagan AC 3-0 State Bank of Travancore - Goals: 1:0 Jose Barreto (3'), 2:0
Debjit Ghosh (32'), 3:0 RP Singh (74').
Amitabha Das Sharma reports that defending champion Mohun Bagan showed glimpses of its attacking prowess at the Saltlake
Stadium. In defeating State Bank of Travancore 3-0, Mohun Bagan warmed up for tougher encounters ahead in the National
League. Thus the victory lifted Mohun Bagan to 10 points from four games. SBT remained on two points from four matches. The
visitors also tasted their back to back loss. The Kolkata's glamour team had a dream start. In the third minute, Mohun
Bagan's midfielder Basudeb Mondal sent in a defence-splitting through ball. Brazilian import Jose Barrato anticipated the
move, ran between the defenders and crashed a left-footer to the far post. At the stroke of the second quarter, Mohun Bagan
consolidated the lead after Barrato made a hash of a fine opening. RP Singh rifled a through into the rival box as Barrato
ran between the two stoppers to get hold of the ball. SBT custodian Rajeev Kumar charged out and blocked the shot. The ball
flew over to give Mohun Bagan a flag kick. Renedy Singh floated the corner kick right in front of Debjit Ghosh as the
defenders stood rooted to the spot. Ghosh just nodded home. SBT came back into the game in the later half with some
imaginative approach work but it was Mohun Bagan which looked dangerous. After a 63rd-minute shot by Prakash crashed into the
bar, R.P. Singh placed home 11 minutes later, after Barrato did the spade work.

Note-1: The Orissa State Women Football Association has sought Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik's intervention
to thwart the AIFF's move to stop the 25th Senior National Football Championship beginning tomorrow on the grounds of it
being "unauthorised".
In a letter to the Chief Minister, OSWFA secretary Sahadev Raut clarified that their association was affiliated to the
Women Football Federation of India which had no relation to the AIFF headed by Mr. Dasmunshi.
Taking exception to Mr Dasmunshi’s recent letter to Orissa Director of Sports Kulamani Deo to stop the championship in
the state, OSWFA President Ashirbad Behera declared the championship would be held in Rourkela and Rajkanika as per schedule
and threatened to move court against the AIFF and those conspiring against staging the national event of the WFFI headed by
Kirti Azad.
Soon after receiving the fax message from Mr Dasmunshi, Mr Deo directed the concerned district authorities to take
appropriate action in the matter. Mr Deo in his letter to the organisers of the championship - the State Sports and Youth
Services Minister and the AIFF President - said his directorate would not recognise the national championship.
Mr Behera, who is also the secretary of the Orissa Olympic Association, said all the 20 state teams participating in the
championship being held for the first time in Orissa, had already arrived.
The 12-day championship for the S.R. Zaidi Trophy would be played on a league-cum-knock-out basis at Rourkela in
Sundargarh and Rajkanika in Kendrapara district. The final would be played at Rourkela on February 11, Mr Behera said.
Note-2: The Karnataka State Football Association has bid for hosting the three Indian home matches in the 2002 World Cup qualifiers against UAE, Yemen and Brunei in Bangalore.
