Today the AIFF held it's first press conference at the Taj Bengal, Calcutta on the upcoming Millenium Super Soccer Cup.
As I am in Calcutta and was invited by journalists to come over for the event, I just went and had a look.
The organisers, the AIFF and sponsors Studio 2100 touted the tournament as Asia's most prestigious international soccer
tournament, with 16-teams playing in four groups in Goa, Kochi and Calcutta.
The Competition will be held between January 10 and 25, 2001 with the winners getting $ 150,000 and the runners-up $
100,000. The third team will be richer by $ 50,000. The team winning the fair play award will bag $ 25,000. Tickets will be
priced between Rs 30 and 150. The opening match, semifinals and the final are likely to be held in Calcutta.
The organisers unveiled Raja, the elephant logo-cum-mascot of the tournament and showed a recorded video clipping where
the Inter Milan and Chile striker Zamorano identified Calcutta as the city of Mother Teresa and confirmed his participation,
though I think that Inter Milan will not release their striker in the middle of the season. Another recorded statement was
shown of Antonio Samendi, coach of the Uruguay B team, while a message from Roger Milla was read out regretting his inability
to make it today, owing to commitments at the Sydney Olympic's.
15 teams have already confirmed, the organisers said. The teams are Japan, Jordan, Iraq, Qatar, Uzbekistan, Hong Kong
(all from Asia), Chile, Uruguay, Colombia (from South America), Cameroon, South Africa (both from Africa), Jamaica, Trinidad
and Tobago (both from Caribbeans), New Zealand (Oceania) and the host India.
The organisers were also trying to get two teams from Europe to participate. Requests have been send to Germany, Holland,
Portugal, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Czech Republic and Greece but I believe that none of the top nations will come.

Note-1: West Bengal minister for food and civil supplies Kalimuddin Shams has taken over as president of
Mohammadan Sporting club. The former general-secretary of the club, Mir Mohammad Omar, has been sentenced to life
imprisonment in a murder case. An emergency meeting of the club’s executive body decided to hand over the reins of the club
to Shams, as the incumbent president Suleman Khurshid resigned and was nominated the club’s new general-secretary.
The dramatic development took place after Supreme Court sentenced Omar along with five others to life imprisonment for
murdering a city businessman in 1986. Omar has been running the affairs of Mohammadan Sporting for nearly two decades, during
which the club experienced a steady decline from the status of one of the most powerful teams in the country in the 1980s.
The news of Omar's conviction came a day after Sporting suffered one of their worst defeats: going down 0-5 to Mohun
Bagan in the Calcutta Super Division soccer championship. Confirming his election as president of the club, Shams said that
his priority was to restore the club to their former status. Omar has been untraceable since the Supreme Court verdict. He
was not even seen during the club's crucial match against Mohun Bagan.
