Bangalore A Division: LRDE 1-0 MICO - Goal: 1:0 George (8').
Bangalore A Division: United Bangalore 1-1 Government Press - Goals: 1:0 Kumar (19'), 1:1 Sudhakar (71').

Note-1: The State Government has decided not to get into the IFA-AIFF controversy over the India Cup international soccer tournament proposed to be held at Calcutta in December. The AIFF, at its general body meeting, had decided on a tournament - The Millennium Cup - at the same time, and the AIFF chief, Mr Das Munshi, was kept in the dark about the move made by the IFA, a constituent unit. The AIFF secretary, Mr Mour, was reported to have written a letter to the IFA expressing his willingness to cooperate on this issue. The AIFF chief also received letters from different national federations, who were surprised that two tournaments were to be held almost simultaneously. Mr Das Munshi let it be known that the IFA was organising a tournament without any permission from the parent body, exposing the AIFF to ridicule. Today, Mr Das Munshi, along with the federation's vice-president, Ashok Ghosh, met Subhas Chakraborty, and handed over a letter stating that since the federation was holding an international tournament at that time, it would not be possible to give the go-ahead to the State Government and the IFA to organise the India Cup. A source close to the Government said that it didn't wish to be involved in this meet.

Bangalore A Division: Indian Telephone Industries (Jrs) 0-1 CIL - Goal: 0:1 Saravana (38').

Note-1: Chances of East Bengal participating in the season-opening McDowell Cup (beginning Saturday) are getting dimmer by the day. With six of their players already in two national camps, and being asked to release four more for the senior India camp (in Patiala), East Bengal stand to 'lose' 10 players of which five are defenders. According to a senior club official, they'll write to the IFA that even if more players have to be released, they must retain services of at least three defenders so that coach Syed Nayeemuddin can field a team in local meets. Otherwise, they will have to pull out of the McDowell Cup and Super Division. While East Bengal’s McDowell Cup opener is slated for Sunday, they are scheduled to kick off their Super Division campaign July 17.

Asian Sub-Junior (U16) Championships Qualifiers: India 0-1 Bangladesh - Goal: 0:1 Anwar Ul-Karim (88').
The India U-16s hopes of reaching the final round of the 9th Asian Sub-Junior football Championship came to a crushing end, as they went down 0-1 to Bangladesh in a vital Group 4 league exchange at the JRD Tata sports complex in Jamshedpur.
The hosts missed chances galore and even muffed up a penalty before Bangladesh striker Anwar Ul Karim struck the all-important goal barely two minutes before the final whistle to propel his team to the next stage of the tournament, scheduled to be held in Vietnam in September.
Karim scored the goal with a neat placement following a gem of a pass from right half Masood Alam, to seal the fate of the Indians, who needed only a draw to book a ticket for Vietnam. India finished their engagements in the four-team group collecting six points, one less than Bangladesh, who move on. The host nation can, however, nurse a faint hope of qualifying for the final round in the event of Bangladesh being disqualified for fielding over-age players.

Note-1: The curtain raiser of the Calcutta football season, McDowell Cup, has already witnessed quite a bit of drama and there may just be a little more. A central character in this tale of confusion and mis-management, East Bengal, are finding it difficult to field a team and are even thinking of staging a walk-out. Six East Bengal players have been asked to attend the national senior camp in Patiala while five others are away in Bangalore for the India under-19 camp. Club officials said yesterday that they can't release more than two seniors. The AIFF, through a faxed message to the IFA this afternoon, has asked those picked to reach Patiala immediately. East Bengal officials, yet to receive a copy of the letter formally, said they will have to decide on pulling out of the McDowell Cup but cited the practical problems of fielding a team without top players. "Two of our side-backs, Ratan Singh and Falguni Dutta have been asked to go to Patiala and two others, Amandeep Singh and Akshay Das, are in Bangalore. Stopper back Deepak Mondal is also wanted in Patiala. How can we field a team without seven defenders," argued a senior club official. According to him, a final decision on whether they will take part in the McDowell Cup will be taken tomorrow. East Bengal are scheduled to open their campaign against FCI on Sunday.

26. June
Asian Sub-Junior (U16) Championships Qualifiers: Sri Lanka 1-1 Pakistan - Goals: 1:0 Lenard Ruwan Kumara (16'), 1:1 Zahid Hamid (18').

Note-1: Great news for all football lovers in Calcutta! If things move as per schedule, sports crazy people of Calcutta might soon have the opportunity to see stars from teams like Juventus Turino and Manchester United playing at the Saltlake stadium.
For the football crazy people of West Bengal, this would indeed be a welcome gift from softdrinks major Pepsi. The company was planning to bring in either former UEFA Champions League winners Juventus or ManU to play exhibition matches in the city. Market unit director of Pepsico India Holdings Limited Sunder Hemrajani said, "We are in the process of finalising a deal with either of these teams, but it is difficult to bring them to play in Calcutta before next year." He said Pepsi was a sponsor of Manchester United and could negotiate for the programme. "We were in talks with Juventus earlier also, but things could not materialise due to their extremely busy schedule." Mr Hemrajani said though Pepsi was better known as sponsors of cricket matches in India, "We do sponsor football matches worldwide." Coming back to the point, Mr Hemrajani said, "We were earlier thinking of bringing Juventus or Manchester United to play in Calcutta this year itself, but considering the Euro 2000 and after that qualifying rounds for the next World Cup, it could not materialise as a number of players were on their national duty. I don't think that this would materialise before end of next year as a number of things would have to be considered like determining playing conditions, availability of stadium and security and other arrangements. It cannot also be in the monsoon season. So these are the things which we have to work out," Mr Hemrajani added. He further said an attempt like this was being taken considering the huge interest the people of Calcutta took in football.
Currently Pepsi sponsors football in a small way in India, while soft drinks rival Coca-Cola sponsors the National League. Maybe the "Cola War" is entering Indian football. It would certainly boast sponsorship!!!

Two headers from Syed Rahim Nabi in the second half paved the way for India's 3-0 win over Sri Lanka in the Asian Sub-Junior Championships Group 4 Qualifiers at the JRD Tata Sports Complex.
After a barren first half, prolific striker Nabi gave India the lead in the 55.minute off a header and then struck again in similar fashion in the 67.minute. Eleven minutes later, TFA product from Manipur, Malswam Tulunga, powered in a rightfooter to complete the tally.

A determined India exploited a sloppy defence to trash Pakistan 6-0 in their inaugural Asian Sub-Junior Championships Group Group 4 Qualifier at the JRD Sports Complex in Jamshedpur.
The Indian forwards pierced through the rival defence with ease to begin their campaign in style in what turned out to be a totally one-sided affair.
Striker Syed Rahim Nabi fired in two goals while TFA-recruit Malswam Tulunga, captain Amjad Ali Khan, Abdul Rouf Khan, Zaiful Houzel chipped in with a goal each to complete the tally.

The JRD Tata Sports Complex in Jamshedpur is all set to host the ninth asian youth football championship (under-16) qualifying matches from June 20 to 27 here.
Chairman of the organising committee AN Singh told reporters today that four teams - India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh - would vie for honours on league basis to qualify from the group four of the championship. Bhutan, however, pulled out from the championship, he said and added the final would be held in Vietnam in September this year. AIFF President Das Munshi came here yesterday and expressed satisfaction over the arrangement for the championship, jointly organised by Tata Steel and the AIFF.
Mr Singh said Mahesh Bista from Nepal and Udom Ananta Pong from Thailand are the match commissioner and the referee inspector respectively.
The inaugural match will be played between India and Pakistan while the hosts will take on Bangladesh in the last match of the tournament. All the matches would be of 80 minutes instead of the customary 90 minutes.

Note-1: Calcutta's giant Mohun Bagan has appealed to West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu to reimburse $ 3.000 they have to pay as fine to Asian Football Confederation for failing to play a home match in the Asian Club Cup Championship in late 1999. The AFC has imposed the fine on Bagan because the hosts' home match against Jubilo Iwata, Japan could not be held owing to the failure of the state administration to provide police force. The appeal was made yesterday by club's general secretary Anjan Mitra after AFC turned down its request to condone the fine as well as suspension from the championship for a year. AFC on May 25 has rejected the Bagan's appeal to condone the penalty and one year suspension from Asian Club Cup Championship.

Note-1: Dipendu Biswas will play for East Bengal! That is the news of the day from Calcutta. The UB group - the common sponsor of the Maidan's dominating duo - has finally yielded to the footballer’s appeal to be allowed to leave Mohun Bagan. Dipendu had been thrown into uncertainty for weeks at a stretch as Mohun Bagan insisted on a Rs 1.000.000 transfer fee and East Bengal were apparently reluctant to pay up with the sponsor looking on. East Bengal, in fact, went on record as saying that they didn't want him. Interestingly, the transfer fee decision was taken by Mr Vijay Mallya at a meeting where officials from both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan were present.
In the meantime Dipendu had been in contact with a german NRI, who might hav gotten him some trials with german fourth division clubs but it is easier to stay in Calcutta and earn a good sum of money rather then go it the rough way...

Note-1: Times of India writer Sunil Warrier has written the following on the differences between AIFF President Das Munshi and secretary Mour.
For the first time since Outlook magazine carried a report of a financial scam in the All India Football Federation, quoting Indian Football Association joint secretary Mr. Ranjit Gupta, and other newspapers reported a questionable pay-off to a bank employee, the AIFF president Mr. Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi, the Congress MP, has broken his silence by writing a letter to the secretary Mr. Kedar Nath Mour and forwarding it to all state units.
However, the letter, which The Times of India has procured, makes no mention about the mysterious payoffs, which is now being investigated by the Standard Chartered Bank.
The bank's senior operational manager Ms. Shalini Warrier wrote to the AIFF in March 2000 that "a cheque of Rs. 3 lakhs was issued to a staff member of our bank and we require a written explanation of the background that necessitated the issue of a cheque in favour of our staff". The cheque was signed by two of the three authorised AIFF signatories - Mr Dasmunshi and treasurer Mr. A.R. Khaleel. Mr Mour, the third, informed the bank that he had no knowledge of the payment and advised them "to initiate a police enquiry."
Mr. Gupta, who was unceremoniously ousted as executive committee member by Mr. Dasmunshi, had also questioned various other AIFF dealings putting the AIFF president in the dock. Among them are the large withdrawls by Dasmunshi without issuing cheques but by letters addressed to the bankers; Rs. 1 crore was debited without citing reasons, Rs. 27 lakhs was transferred to an account holder who had nothing to do with AIFF; $50,000 FIFA grant for development programmes was spent on other purposes etc. All along, Mr. Dasmunshi, the chief Congress whip in Parliament and also the Calcutta Congress Pradesh chief, maintained a studious silence on all these matters. And now his reactions in the form of a letter to Mr Mour bears little justification to the alleged misdemeanors. And there is no mention about the Rs. 3 lakhs payoff to the StanChart employee.
On the FIFA grant, Mr Dasmunshi writes: "The Calcutta branch receives money from sponsors, broadcasters and FIFA in one account in one basket. It was difficult to segrigate for a particular amount for any particular programme. It is a fact that expenditures for even the National League are incurred from this account. Is not u-19, u-16 and u-21 part of youth development programme? Is not the participation in the competition of u-16, u-19 part of youth development programme? Is not the training camps, exposure, payments of the coaches, trip to Mauritius part of the youth development programme? All the money has come from the common account."
The AIFF president, who will be seeking to get re-elected for the third term as elections are due later this year, feels certain state bodies are behind the move to jeopardise the AIFF. "Someone may feel jealous that AIFF is controlling National League and only if the NFL is in jeopardy can they bring the sponsor for their local leagues and all state associations shall understand the message very quickly behind this game."
The fact that Mr Damunshi and Mr. Mour are at loggerheads and everything is not hunky-dory at the AIFF is clearly evident as the AIFF president adds in his letter to the secretary: "I want to put an end of this vilification campaign. As the hon. secretary you are neither communicating to me your reaction nor asking me to take steps."
Mr Dasmunshi has put the ball back in Mr. Mour's court regarding Mr Gupta's charges as the IFA secretary's letter was addressed to the secretary. "It was your duty to explain either the transaction or to refer to me or to the treasurer or to have a meeting with me and treasurer and the accountant to reply to all those points (made by Mr. Gupta). However, you did not do so. The IFA secretary's letter had damaged the entire AIFF. Does it not hurt you? Are you incapable to answer or to communicate to president and treasurer? I don't understand."
Finally, Mr Dasmunshi raises the bogey of cricket which he has time and again mentioned in various AIFF general body meetings. "When cricket is facing criticism this is the time we shall make more transparent arrangements of AIFF to accept the challenge and to attract sponsors and sort out all issues and areas of doubt straightaway without hiding any matter in any quarter and we shall do it with full satisfaction with the auditor, general body and finance committee."

Note-2: The AIFF today shortlisted 30 probables for three week camp to be held in Patiala to select team for the tour of United Kingdom and South Korea. Releasing the list of the probables, AIFF President DasMunshi said this is for the first time that a foreign based company - Sapphire Enterprises of United Kingdom - has joined hands with the federation to arrange for this exposure trip. He said the coaching cum trial camp will be held from June 21 to July 14. He said the camp will be supervised by the chief coach Sukhvinder Singh, assistant coach Krishnaji Rao and technical director P.K.Banerjee.
The Probables: Goalkeepers: Prasanta Dora (Tollygunge Agragami), Sandip Nandy (Mohun Bagan), Virender Singh (Mahindra United), Vikrant Sharma (Hindustan Club); Defenders: Deepak Mondal (East Bengal), Ratan Singh (East Bengal), Falguni Datta (East Bengal), Hussein Mustafi (Mohun Bagan), Prabhjot Singh (JCT Mills), Daljit Singh (JCT Mills), Robert Fernandes (Salgaocar SC), Mahesh Gawli (Churchill Brothers), K.V. Dhanesh (Indian Telephone Industries), Tapan Ghosh (Mahindra United); Midfielders: Basudeb Mondal (Mohun Bagan), Rennedy Singh (East Bengal), Dipankar Roy (East Bengal), Jules Alberto (Salgaocar SC), Hardip Sangha (JCT Mills), Hardip Saini (JCT Mills), Jo Paul Ancheri (FC Kochin), Khalid Jamil (Air India), Shanmugam Venkatesh (Mahindra United), Syed Shabir Pasha (Indian Bank); Forwards: I.M. Vijayan (FC Kochin), Baichung Bhutia (Bury FC, ENGLAND), Bijen Singh (East Bengal), Hardip Gill (JCT Mills), Francis Silveira (Churchill Brothers), Mohammed Najeeb).
AIFF media director N.K.Bhatia said that 18 member team will leave for abroad in July.

I had a phone chat with Jas Bains in the evening today.
Our main topic was the upcoming tour. The biggest change is regarding the Bangladesh match. The match India vs Bangladesh will be held at Filbert Street, Leicester on July 29. On July 27 India will meet the public in Leicester ahead of their concluding tour match. India will be also visiting Temples, Gurudwaras and Mosques in England but the main cause of the tour is match practice ahead of the World Cup Qualifiers. This was made clear to me by Jas.
