IndianFootball.Com Interview: MAYANTI LANGER/DEBAYAN SEN

The Indian national team has reached the finals of the Nehru Cup for the first time in the tournament's 25 years of existence and our Rhys Mascarenhas caught-up with Mayanti Langer and Debayan Sen from Zee Sports, who through their work follow our national team closely, to get their views on an improved Team India.

Do you think the Indian team's standard has improved over the last 6 months?

Mayanti: Well the results speak for themselves, we've jumped up 11 spots on the FIFA rankings. Compared to last year, we are playing attacking football, converting our chances, and gelling as a unit. Plus the pressure is off Baichung Bhutia, (although he is still the catalyst for a winning formula) we've already had six different scorers in this competition. The biggest change I've noticed is attitude. The players step onto the pitch, and believe they can win.

Debayan: Yes.

What according to you are the main reasons for the Indian team's success/decline?

Mayanti: Without a doubt, Bob Houghton. I'm quoting the players on this, he is one of the best things to happen to Indian football. He has a very practical, realistic approach and no-nonsense attitude that I admire. The players admire him not only as a Coach, but as a personality because he is a great motivator. Another reason is the players themselves. We have to give them full credit for wanting to accomplish their personal and professional goals. Hopefully the changes in the upcoming season will contribute as well. More internationals, developed infrastructure, corporate assistance, and cultivating the interest for football.

Debayan: Improved fitness levels plus greater awareness among players of their specific roles in the team.

In which areas do you think our Indian team lacks when compared to world class teams like Brazil.

Mayanti: Too be honest, if we are asked to compare ourselves to the five time world champions, it doesn't really put anything into perspective. We should be comparing ourselves to the developing Asian teams. The teams is the Nehru Cup are in our league, therefore it would be an achievement if we can win, plus the Indian squad can learn from a team like Syria. The next step is tackling higher ranked teams in the World Cup qualifiers and the AFC competitions. We need to take on Asia, before we can take on the World!

Debayan: There's light years to go in terms of tactical awareness, skills, physical ability. So no point even comparing!

Who do you think is the most promising player from the Indian team at the current Nehru Cup?

Mayanti: I'm impressed with the entire squad. They seem to be focused, inspired, and determined to win. But since you've asked me to pick! Our strikers have done a great job, but I'd have to say Steven Dias.

Debayan: Steven Dias... Don't know about promising, but he's the most improved player in this team.

Many thanks for talking to us!
