Defining Tactics
by Roger Verdi

The idea of defining tactics or systems of play are clearly complex. The game hinges on tactical opportunities and limitations in the methods of attacking and defending. Understanding tactics is an important component of success in the game, for players, coaches even for spectators. However, the old cliche " that players win matches, not systems, nevertheless, the importance of a system of play is tactically needed. For the simple fact that it allows players to make full use of their technical abilities, creativity, Intelligence and personal characteristics. And for the coaches, it allows them to designate players positions and roles with the concept of giving individual players and the team the best options for success on both attacking and defending.

Tactics are methods or strategies in which player(s) employ their technical skills. Their train of thought alternates between attacking; How can he help to keep possession of the ball within the team and go forward? and in defending the train of thought; What can he do to help his team regain possession of the ball once it is lost. Therefore, we can assume that defining tactics governs how players act individually and as a team with each other on the pitch.

For coaches, tactics offer a chance to play a role in the welfare of their team, at least indirectly, through their own concepts and strategies on how they perceive the game to be played. This of course, depends on the individual coaches attitude and expectations. To understand these qualities a coach must first define his own relationship to tactics and tactical training. That is to say that "TACTICS" are a systematic action by individual players, groups and teams, on both attack and defense, aimed at successfully resolving game situations. Tactics make use of technique and condition and take into account the strengths and weaknesses of both teams, as well as the unique conditions of each match".
