South Asian Football Federation Championships:
In the early 90s the "South Asian Football Federation" had the idea of setting up its own championships. The first Championships were held in 1993 and the championship was called the "South Asian Association of regional Co-operation" Gold Cup. It was held in Lahore, Pakistan. The Trophy was won by India, the regional powerhorse! In 1995 Sri Lanka won the second edition of the SAARC championships at home in Colombo. In the next edition in 1997 the championship got a new name, it was now called "South Asian Football Federation" championships. The first SAFF Cup was held in Kathmandu, Nepal and India won back the championship it had lost two years earlier and reinstated itself as the regions best and strongest team, winning the record sum of $50,000. Now the championship was suppost to be carried out every year but in 1998 the championships had to be postponed as the title sponsor was hit by the Asian financial crisis. The second SAFF Championships was held in Goa in April 1999 with India defending it's title. Now the tournament is held as a biannual event, though it had to be postponed from December 2007 to June 2008.
